Jane Goodall Comments on the BC Trophy Hunt

What a bunch of nonsense. Problem with today's society is that they act on emotion rather than science when it comes to hunting. I do agree that sport hunting is often conducted with Big Man Syndrome, but science has proiven that hunting bears in the end os beneficial for their survival. For example, both black bears and grizzlies alike will predate upon the young cubs of their own species and, when hunting is conducted to balance bear populations and densities, their numbers actually rise.

Jane, I am pleased to see you speaking out on the trophy hunt of bears in Canada. However, this is a big task because many hunters in BC are from an old school that will not be easily shaken from the tree. But every step counts and I fully support your words and intent because it is noble.

No I don't believe in trophy hunting (just to reiterate my comment here earlier).... and just one more thing.... I'll state the obvious. You folks out there that flush your household chemicals, toss your Swiffers and drive your petrol vehicles... mmm mmm mmm. You're doing more harm in six months than one trophy hunter does in five years. Of course neither should be happening.... but I thought someone should mention the ole' "casting the first stone."

@chettech Great comment. You spoke your mind without attacking anyone in specific and, having done so, you should be a shining example of the debate between hunters and non-hunters. I respect your position as a non-hunter, and encourage anyone else who is against trophy hunting to conduct their comments in the same manner. The same can be said for hunters voicing their opinions too.

Hunting for food is one thing - hunting for trophy is compensating for a lack of size elsewhere. It all comes down to someone thinking they need to prove something. What it proves to me is what a loser you actually are.

@xenophrenia Hunting is regulated, in less its poaching. Which case trophy hunting actuallys helps to a degree because big game hunters have to spends lots of money on their trophy which goes back into the enviroment, and most game hunters go after big males not females, especially if that female has babies. I'm not down with poaching but there is nothing wrong with legal hunting.

Jane, seriously, look at what hunters do in BC to make sure that bears and all animals are managed and around forever.

BC Fisherman and Hunters have done more for conservation than this so called conservation group your endorsing!  Why dont you visit the local hunting group and see what they do, then go see what the rainforest people do. you will see hunters actually make a diffrence. Go back to africa!

could you imagine how over populated this world would be if there was no hunting? Those bears you are saying shame to killing would be on your door step eating your garbage, hanging out in your childrens parks. Could you imagine your child playing in a park and a bear coming and thinking oh yum! You wouldn't be saying poor bear, poor bear! There would be kaos and many human deaths. It happens now in area's where bears are over populated. Ya, cute and cuddly until they attack!

you honestly think the world would be over run with bears if there was no trophy hunting? lol you must be kidding. food supply, natural selection and habitat loss will and forever will keep their populations minimal to what they once were. and secondly, humans have no right to play god and act as population controllers, who the hell gave us that right? its a self righteous destructive attitude, nothing more. educate and learn to exist together, we don't own the planet.

My Canadian wildlife is something that I treasure and I am so upset every time I hear of these killings - and for me bears especially as I reared three cubs who were victims of this vile 'sport' as they would call it ! I also have a bear as a guardian spirit - and I would say to the, - that I will always remain to fight for their right to live and roam free from harm on their land which was given to them by GOD ! This is about sport hunting, not to be confused with animal husbandry or subsistance hunting. Trophy killing of anything can be prevented, and should. Too bad the politicians able to stop this barbaric practice are desensitized...for whatever reasons.

I am disturbed about hiding people's identity! Why are they killing Bear in the 1st place? Is it to prove their macho egos, that they can kill another creature? This behaviour is not limited to the male of our species, but also females. Just look at Sarah Palin, who bravely hunts from an airplane...what courage! I guess I will never understand mankind, as it slowly destroys our planet for the sake of ego & progress. I can only hope & pray that we see the Light, before it's too Late!

Its sickening how people who have no idea or understanding about hunting seem to feel we do it for the thrill of the kill. Ummm wrong. Yet she doesn't do anything about cows,pigs,chickens etc that are being mass produced and slaughtered for human consumption. And you think taking one bear for consumption is bad. Oh spare me. Poor trophy hunter can't hang your hide your wall? That'll be the day when you have my and the majority of the populations sympathy. It may not be all but the majority is about the kill, you saying its not is utter bullshit. The issue is killing for sport, and everyone has the right to comment. These animals and this habitat belong to the world. One doesn't need to understand anything more than you kill for sport! Thats it! I could care less about anything else.

I'm from a small town in British Columbia, where hunting is very common. I have nothing against hunting for food; it's perfectly natural. But killing an animal for "sport" is senseless. I understand the thrill of the hunt, but the kill itself is a needless and sickening waste of life.

I hang my head in shame yet again over Canada's lack of compassion, respect and care for the animals who live on her land - who were there FIRST !
