The great German lifters Weller and Marc Huster had a common problem: they were competing against the legends of weightlifting. With Marc it was Dimas and with Weller in his prime it was the mountain of Rezazadeh that stood in his path to olympic superheavyweight champion. Ironically, Steiner won the title with less total than Ronny had got in Atlanta or Sydney.
I feel sorry for Ronny Weller. He came from what is used to be East Germany and made good on his lifts. He was trecked by Andre who started with a low C&J nd made hime think he cannot do 260 KG. Ronny could have lifted more than his last lift but he exhausted all of his lifts thinking there was a big margin. Margin is irrelevant, he should have gone for the maximum in his last lift regardless of what margin he had. He came better in 2000 but had to face Rezazdeh
Also, I should clarify, that although kg are generally considered a unit of mass, the reverse could be applied to SI units, i.e. 1 kg force or kg_f equals the force on 1 kg_m genrated by the earths gravitational field. This is what is meant when someone says an object "weights" so and so kg.
Kg is a measure of mass not force, it is used to describe weight because we are only familiar with the gravitational attraction at the surface of the earth.
I forgot to mention that we Americans also have the best drugs (including steroids!!!) in the world, but for some reason our weightlifters still suck Moose balls.
you cant make it to the top with out roids. people say have been tested ha. there are many easy ways round the test. sorry. and there is a level of turning a blind eye to any suspicions especially at olympic levels. the women its easy to see only have to listern to their voices and look at their face bone structures. and the fact they have massive muscles
And for the 75kg world champion, Svetlana Podobedova, she's alreydy got caught once for using roids. So I guess it would be naive to think, that now when she's even better, she'd have stopped using them.
But enough with double-standards. They're still great athletes in my books. It takes hell a lot of training and commitment to be the best.
I hope you read this and thanks for your time if you do so.
So what would you guess her squat max to be? The reason I'm asking this, that I've sometimes argued that the best squatters are weightlifters, not powerlifters as you would expect. You don't see much women in powerlifting competitions but there are some in weightlifting -- most likely because it's an olympic sport.
Just to toss a bit more some thoughts...you said you've some coaching experience so I guess you are more competent to evaluate Jang Mi-Rans lifting. The South-Koreans often seem to have flawless technique in clean and jerk, and what has caught my eye in this superheavy, that her legs are enormous.
First off, very few olympic lifters take steroids. Especially in the United States. Testing is conducted at least once a month. The testers at random times. Plus, the accusation of steroid use by many people on this video is stupid. Also, most lifters are not wealthy enough to buy steroids and do not know enough to even attempt to take them.
its only a 2 game ban for first time offence in NFL.....you arnt kicked out....people are caught on steroids all the time! Watch the documentary "Bigger, Stronger, Faster", it might open your eyes a bit!
Strongmans probably take less roids than others, but yes almost all are on roids.rugby, football players, culturists etc etc.why you fans are so dumb?if you respect someone in weightlifting yeah why not,you must you that they 95% on roids.this is for sure. over century ago Sandow,Saxon, Cyr,Apollon and Lurich those were not on roids, but today almost all.
@Pentagonshark666 dude if u knew anything about olympic qualifications and those of any professional sport ud kno that they test everybody for steroids. you get kicked out of tha nfl for usin steroids and they test them every6months. u get ur urine tested in tha olympics for steroids befor and after you do ur event. nobody uses roids anymore cuz we're not as stupid as u think we r.
@beastmaniac92 But... if YOU knew anything about steroid testing you'd know how easy they are to beat... its pretty well known that most of the weight lifters/track n field athletes are using illegal substances but the weak testing methods used in the olympics/nfl/most sports are easily cheated with masking agents.. the only unbeatable test is where they take a blood sample and test it numerous times over 24 hours 4 hormonal changes.. cant beat that. But so far only the australians use it!
You couldn't be more wrong. Lifters are on steriods, just not the kind detectable in urine tests. Remeber MArion Jones she was on balco formulas when she won in sydney. She admitted it. There are formulas that exist that won't show up on a blood test either. Which they began doing at last years world championships.
@powmongo just because someone is strong doesnt mean they are on steroids. And they can check your liver for the metabolism of the toxicity. Im a fucking RN. please dont talk medical wiith me man
@Jmarozza025 I'll talk however I like. I've been involved in Weightlifting for quite some time and know how it works, how lifters "pass" tests or pay off federations. Have you seen the 75kg women's champion, Have you heard her talk? I've learned lifting from a coach who has produced Olympic and World champions and I have been involved in coaching Cheryl Haworth Olympic and world medalist. She beat Jan Mi-Ran when they were Juniors and now Jan does 187 clean and jerk. Drug free? No.
@powmongo Yes Cheryl beat Jang as a junior but the Korean had just started lifting seriously, as far I'm aware. She's from the countryside and didn't have good coaching as a young lifter.
not really, he had the gold at this stage the chances of chermerkin coming out and beating him with a 260kg jerk was impossible, the fact that chermerkin pressed out and was awarded the lift is another story
If that is so, then why does the entire world (outside the USA) measure weight in term of mass units (Kilograms, grams, etc.)? Here in the USA we measure weight using actual weight units (pound, ounce, etc.) The simple fact is that everyone except us Americans is confused. Go USA!
@GeorgeDedaj Weight is the mass of an object multiplied by the local gravitational pull, so you usually have W=mg, people here in the UK dont use mass as weight. Go UK :P
@GeorgeDedaj By international agreement, SI units are supposed to replace all other forms of units globally... eventually. So the Newton (N) will be the unit of weight. Not sure how that will come about though considering the strong use of pounds and Kg's as an understanding of weight magnitude. Whether it's pounds or Kg's you use you'll know what 1 feels like and what 100 might feel like in comparason.
@GeorgeDedaj Actually, in my engineering studies, we did use a lb term that indicated mass. We wrote it as lb with a "m" subscript for mass. Weight term would be 1 lb with an "f" subscript for force. The two values would be be essentially synonomous on the surface of the earth, but in a different gravitational field, the mass would remain unchanged but the "weight" or force generated by gravitational pull would vary. Also there is the english unit for mass, the "slug", 32.2 slugs= 1 lb_m.
@AyeTribeCalledFresh or put another way it's the gravitational pull of the earth (-9.8 m/s^2) on the object and the gravitational pull of the object on the earth.
yeah you can dip shit, i hate powerlifting. your sacraficing form for weight and its dumb power. olympic lifting is all explosiveness and form. you can't be a olympian without form.
fuck you, the dead lift is the closest thing to olympic lifting and the squat but your sacrificing form for weight. powerlifting is a horrible sport. an olympic lifter is stronger than a powerlifter.
i disagree. weightlifters are certainly more powerful, but stronger? not so sure. i like pl and wl i must admit wl is more fun to watch and the lifts look more impressive. i personally think that it would be cool to see what happened if pl and wl merged, just for one event, to see what happens.
To your muscles though...you aren't really lifting slowly. If you are doing 90% of your 1 rep max on say bench press, there is no way in hell, olympic lifter or not, fast twitch dominant or not, there is no way you are going to move that weight "fast". Slow is as fast as you can move heavy weight. You have to understand that a complex movement like the clean n jerk is TOTALLY different from the bench, squat, or deadlift in terms of mechanics. The clen n jerk uses your whole body as a cohesive
I agree, it is impossible to do a power clean slowly and a bench at max weight quickly, but power is still defined as the work done per unit of time. So therefore, the power clean has an appropriate name. It requires a lot of strength to move a heavy object, but it may not generate a lot of power.
single unit, therefore you are going to generate more speed. The clean n jerk or the snatch just happens to be a better movement to promote more power if done correctly than say the bench or squat or deadlift. It is therefore the exercise itself that is the catalyst to how much power can be generated, not so much the type of lifter someone is. Also, for somone to move over 1000lbs for the squat in say 2 to 3 seconds, generated more power than this guy who just did the c+j.
Let is actually calculate the power of this clean vs the squat you just mentioned. P = w/t and work in this case = mass x gravity x height. Let us use a man of the same height of 6ft or 1.83m. He lifts this in roughly 2 sec and Karwowski did a 1003 lbs squat in roughly 6 seconds. Therefore we have (255kg x 9.8m/ss x 1.83m)/2s = 2287 W compared with (455.9kg x 9.8m/ss x 1.83m)/6 = 1363 W. The clean generates more power and this is assuming the squat bar goes to the ground, which it does not.
are u crazy? cosider acceleration by gravity on the weight, he has to overcome that to just seperate it from the ground! ...thats why a little baby like u can't lift that!!
If you look at the physics, it takes gravity into account. In fact, I'm assuming all energy is going into lifting the weight, i.e. working against the gravitational potential energy.
Of course I can't lift that. If I could, I would be an Olympic medalist and WR holder...what's your point? You can't either.
I remember this. Ronny the German (sitting) lift 155kg and threw his boots in the crowd thinking he won the gold. Chemerkin comes out and lifts 260kg for the Gold medal. Very funny, sorry for Ronny though.

These olympic lifters are beasts! I bodybuild, and do a lot of powerlifting movements as well, but I have to say from what I can determine these Olympic lifters must be the strongest and most explosive athletes on the face of the planet. I wish there was an Olympic lifting club at my university...i would sure as heck join it these guys have my respect. :-)

I remember this. Ronny the German (sitting) lift 155kg and threw his boots in the crowd thinking he won the gold, but Chemerkin comes out and lifts 260kg for the Gold medal. Very funny, sorry for Ronny though.
Go Russia !!!

Weller is a fuckin legend- I love his coach- pure emotion. One of the great super heavy weightlifting displays...bettered possibly by Sydney 2000
