  • the song is: "Confrontation" by Craig Safan

  • The bad guy that shoots him is Denis Farina.

  • Guys, watch drive.

Damn Mann did some inspiring stuff.

  • Super musique beau film

  • 1911 .45 acp ...THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE.

  • amen, toda, Mann is great , Thief, Manhunter, Heat, Collateral...jm

  • totally underrated movie by his higness director and master of visuality, michael mann

  • @TigerUpperCut22 Thank you my brother... Michael Mann God of Cinema!

  • @1aneeshsivan

totally correct. ty too bro =)

  • I cant believe this film still hasn't got a blu-ray transfer its needed one for ages and i can only imagine how awesome the film would look restored.

  • This was a geat movie, and have the soundtrack LP still from 1982

  • Filme quando exibido no Brasil chamou-se:"Profissão Ladrão"/The Thief)-1981.Trilha sonora memorável de Tangerine Dream. Marcos Maurício/Brazil

  • It is "Confrontation" by Craig Sefan. It was on the original Tangerine Dream Soundtrack LP. I'm finding it difficult to locate as a music download. Similar problem with the song Crystal Voice by TD from the Firestarter soundtrack. Howcum everything I like is not on iTunes? If the musicians would post they'd get my 99 cents.

And the chords are Bm D Em G Bm if you wanna jam along.

  • any hardcore fans know the name of the song at the end?

  • @mrMikeHawk100 The name of the song is "Confrontation" by the artist Craig Safan who is a composer artist on many rare/obscure soundtracks. It is only available on CD on the Wounded Bird Records hard to find issue/release of this soundtrack. The Virgin Records issue does not have it - all songs on that are by Tangerine Dream.

  • Anyone else have a rock hard boner when Caan drops that mag and reloads?

  • 3:45 comfortably numb guitar solo (cover). someone should put the real p.f. end solo to this scene i think it would work.

  • Per me è anche il miglior film di Mann

  • The final scene of the shooting, is one of the most beautiful scenes ever madein the history of cinema, I saw this film more than 15 years ago, and I saw it again a hundred times, the music and slow motion is perfect, worthy of Sam Pechinpah and Sergio Leone.

  • Thief is one of my favorite movies. This scene was awesome and well-directed. One of the best movies of 1981.

  • pinche grande

  • 100% pure class - it was meant to be and no dislike's prove's this is the best of the best :) im sure my fellow youtuber's will agree.....x

  • james caan is a bad motha fucka

  • Do you think he went back to his wife?

  • FUCK YEAH IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THEN THIS!!

  • great stuff thanks....loved this flick for years...

  • ANOTHER GREAT MICHAEL FUCKIN MANN FILM

  • 3:44-ART CARNEY NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  • what an amzing film, just brilliant. i need to buy it. the music is great too!! one of michael manns early films?

  • @goldyn12345

    HIs first, actually.

  • Carl Sagan music brilliant

  • Very realistic and true if you know the scheme of things. As I stated before, the ending music seems to be identical to the movie, The Boys Next Door.

Any comments as to this as to what the song is and who did it is appreciated.

    Thanks,

    DRSANGLE

  • @drsangle

The muisc is called "Confrontation," and was writen by Craig Safan for the movie. Near the end of post production Michael Mann decided he needed another piece for the ending sequence. Since Tangerine Dream, who did the bulk of the movie soundtrack, were unavailable Mann had Safan compose the needed music.

  • For those that are curious or interested, look at the movie, The Boys Next Door, Charlie Sheen at the ending and identical music is used. Any comments appreciated.

    Thanks,

    DRSANGLE

  • Prosky....NOOOOO!

  • Which version of the awesome film is this? I have the Laser Disc copy that they transfered over to dvd. And the one that comes on showtime all the time. Is this from a vhs copy? i must know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • where can i download this tune i have the tangerine dream version of soundtrack but not the wounded bird records version which includes confrontation by craig safan

  • great movies,great plots,great scenes, that's micheal mann!!!!

  • This is the only Michael Mann film I enjoy, but damn it's a good one! Caan's best role and performance. 10/10

  • I always wanted to shoot Robert Prosky while a knock-off of Comfortably Numb played.

  • @WardenGordon It does sound a lot like "Numb"

  • It says a lot that this simple shootout has so much more impact than virtually everything put on film today.

  • Dont fuck whit J.Caan

  • This movie is awesome. It's also very interesting looking at the making of this film or like Collateral, Heat, etc. and see all the technical proficiency that went into making the movie. I thought it was cool the way he reloaded. It's actually faster that way then emptying the magazine, loading another magazine and then racking the slide. Collateral also used like LAPD people to train Tom Cruise on the guns and stuff. Michael Mann is good.

  • Cann makes De Niro in Heat look like a Pussy. Walk away from your life in 30 seconds? How about dump your family, blow up your businesses and kill your enemies!

  • @90steenager agreed BTW in "heat" when voite is talking to deniro in the car, he mentions that pacino took out frankie (cant make out last name ) in chicago, most movie fans believe that it was caan character that was mention here

also i wonder why leo thought he could control frank, i guess all his life he brought and control people and though frank would fall in line

should have used him only as freelance / will call special high reward missions,

    would have made serious money

  • @kidstl - In Heat, he says Hannah "blew away Frankie Unger up in Chicago." He also says "Frankie was a fuckin madman." It's a reference to this movie. Not that the storylines are exactly connected in any way.

You have to understand the Chicago mob too. They wanted total control over everyone and everything and were just plain ruthless.

  • @hogger129 thanks for the reply...and i guess your right about the mentality of the mob...i rather would work like the communists if i was like leo, three steeps forward then two back, repeat process, and dont forget to use them "useful idiots" along the way, it will take a long time, but when the time comes to make the ultimate move, non will be able to oppose you...leo should have studied history and warfare before going gangster....

  • @90steenager

yeah thats true but DENIRO probably woulda never allowed himself to get mixed up with the fat guy like CANN did hes more desciplined & reserved but both movies are great aka both MICHAEL MANN movies (lol)

  • Michael Mann on this..jm

  • Whoa, when the music comes in . . . Great soundtrack . . .

  • The version I have I was told is an unoffical D-cut. I heard in the theater version there isn't any slow motion at the end. Is this true?

  • great movie ! really want a blu ray

my old dvd is 4:3 LB

  • the song sounds like comfortably numb

  • @Shanethefilmmaker Movie theme song of THIEF is played by Tangerine Dream

  • @jeffsor47 I know that I said it sounds like comfortably numb I didn't say it is comfortably numb

  • @Shanethefilmmaker

Dear Shanethefilmaker, what you say is correct, it sounds indeed like the comfortably numb solo. I play guitar, and the Chords are the same as by comfortably numb, but in this track they use one chord less. So what I wanne say is that your music ears are GOOD! :-) Greets from Raoul the netherlands

  • @DaRaoul25 I saw the movie today,i also thought it was Comfortably numb, love the song and the movie.

  • check out my James Caan Impersonations from Thief, and other movies on my page. Franks the best, Leo got fuckn aced

  • @tonytonytoast What happened to Tony the Muscles ??

  • A guy blows up his house, his bar and car lot downtown, and no one notices or hears. He then engages in a fire fight at the bad guy's home and no one hears

    or notices that either.

  • i agree...this movie is one between the best. Ever.

  • Tangerine Dream's best I think! One of my top 5 movies.

  • Tangerine Dream finished soundtrack to Thief and moved in a concert tour. Michael Manna grass stated that he still needed the piece for the end and he had to employ somebody else. It's Craig Safan !!!

  • The Bartender at katz & jammer is William L Peterson who portrayed FBI Profiler in "Manhunter" in 1986

  • I couldn't understand Caan's character throwing it all away. I know he didn't want to work for the crime boss but why destroy everything?

  • @Melville10

because he had reached that state again where he doesn't give a f**k whether he lives or dies, he had achieved that mental attitude...this is the key to Franks character...he is on the edge, always really a loner who ran out of time and knew it.

  • i love the woman on the phone...ehhh, go ahead and kill him..im making a call....lol

  • Excellent Piece By Tangerine Dream For this film, one of their Best

  • Damn this film ruled... Really under-appreciated, I'd never even heard of it until I bought it on a whim because it was directed by Mann. I think it might even be my favourite film of his. This ending's superb.

  • @HuDaFuK

I had the honor of seeing this movie in the theater as a kid. It was awesome then, and still awesome now.

Love how Mann had Caan go to Jeff Coopers training to handle the 1911.

  • James Caan was superb in this. He had the hard-edged blue collar thief down to a T.

  • and what would be wrong about amazing guitar music sounding like pinkfloyd?

  • @ghdfhsfnfgbadfhsfh there is nothing wrong with souning like david gilmore on guitar, it was an observation. is

  • something that does not exist......a bad michael mann film. as for the music in this film, great....but it does sound a bit like pink floyd. gotta get back to mahunter!!

  • "Want some milk? ".... Gotta love it!

  • the music sounds similar to Comfortably Numb by pink floyd

  • listen to Ma Melodie by M, he's clearly ripped this off

  • 4:08- OWNED

  • great movie. I love the songs on it though, lol.

  • Nobody reloads like Jimmy Caan.

  • I do.

  • @mygqdavid I do

  • great music

  • 45 automag...

  • It's a 6" 1911 .45 customized by California gunsmith Jim Hoag. It's basically a modified Series 70 Colt 1911 .45 Gold Cup National Match.

  • The insider was GR8. Crowe deserved Oscar 4 it.

  • I remember watching this at home and this movie made a lasting impression on me. I fell in love with Tuesday Weld and the soundtrack.

I play this song now to my friends and they all thing it's Pink Floyd.

  • This is by far Mann's best film. Heat could have been great but Pacino ruined it with his over-the-top "acting." This film though, \s a gem

  • the only problem i had with the film was what the hell was leo thinking..??...i mean he should have kept to the one deal and those profits...

when he ripped off franks money and killed his friend, there was no "back to work frank" ...after that it was the point of no return,if leo was such a gangster he would have realized this, and either wore his ass as a hat or just outright kill frank....leo letting him leave his house was singing his own death warrant, leo must have thought 2 B godfather

  • A professional thief like Frank who usually works alone would probably never get close to a guy like Leo unless he was a made guy. Frank would have been working with low level wiseguys. When he refused to do anymore work they would have either paid him off and let him go or they would have paid him off and killed him or just stiffed him and killed him.

  • @kidstl Simple, Leo was one dumb old Mob fuck who didn`t realize what a hard bad ass Frank actually was. He made the mistake of thinking he could control him. Big mistake!! The end of the film shows final revenge at it`s best. When Leo said "I`ll have your whore of a wife out pimped on the street getting fucked in the ass by niggers" You knew Leo was a dead man walking!

  • In my opinion, this is Mann's best work next to Heat. This is sort of nostalgic.

I wonder what it would be like if Mann did a remake of this. Remember Heat was a remake of sort of LA Takedown. But idk. It would be difficult to top this movie.

  • Was pleasantly surprised at this movie, expected it to be a mediocre early attempt from Mann, but it turned out damned good. Just finished watching it and had to find this scene to show a friend, so thanks for uploading it!

  • @Beckmen - Well see I had seen Heat - my dad bought it when it came out on VHS back in 1995/1996. I was blown away by Heat. In Heat, when Nate and Neil are talking in one of the earlier scenes, he references Hanna "blowing away Frankie Unger up in Chicago." Wikipedia said it was a reference to Mann's 1981 movie Thief. Wanted to see it ever since then. Came on Charter On-Demand so I watched it expecting it to be like LA Takedown. Like a cheapo movie. But it was truly epic. One of my favorites.

  • Yeah but to produce is one thing but to direct is another. I love the series "Miami Vice" I just hated the movie.

  • This movie was damn good. I watched it last night for the first time. I think Michael Mann might be on the list of my favorite directors. Look at his record, Thief, Manhunter, Last of the Mohicans, Heat, The Insider, Ali, the list goes on & on....His only flaw is the Miami Vice movie with the two hacks Jamie Foxx & Colin Farrell. What a shit movie.

Also, I love how in all his films in the 80's, the scores' consist of synths & keyboards.

  • farina with the street sweeper!!! awesome!

  • i would have gave the old man the whole magazine!!!

  • tangerine dream made all the movies famous with their music.

  • I think this was James Caan's best role. Better than Sonny in The Godfather no offense.

  • I agree

  • I swear Michael Mann is in LOVE with that neonish color of blue. Its the same in MV.

  • Yeah, thanks. I found this out not long after I posted. Google works wonders. Ive wanted to know about this since I saw the movie in the theater.

  • So, can any of you firearm freaks tell me what kind of weapon Farinas character is wielding? Is that a box fed shotgun or what?

  • this was a post production piece of score by Craig Safan, and yes it is clearly because Mann couldn't afford to clear Comfortably Numb.

  • soundtrack made by tangerine dream

  • This and Heat, which is also a Michael Mann film and a remake of his older film L.A. Takedown are the two best "crime" films I've ever seen. Collateral also ranks right up there with them. All Michael Mann films.

  • Love Michael Mann. Love the Pink Floyd.

No surprise therefore I love this scene.

  • or tangerine dream?!?

  • Fine. I don't even remember this on the OST.

This is a rip off of Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. I assume Mann could not afford the rights. He also rips it in Manhunter where Graham is working out the developing labels whilst looking out the window..

Just like the Stones in Jericho Mile.

He has basically reordered the chords from the Comf Numb solo.

  • Check out Dennis Farina being owned at 5:30.

I love this ending - no dialogue, great music that really sells the scene, a tense shootout, gritty and bloody violence (Leo's shooting at 3:42 and 4:08 for example), nice camera-work, and James Caan being James Caan, that is a major badass (just take 4:50 to 4:55 - that is a pure hero-shot if ever I saw one; loading a gun never looked so cool).

And of course, the lonely hero walks away into the night. What more could you ask for in an ending?

  • Forget James Bond and Dirty Harry, James Caan is a BEAST with a pistol! .45 owns!

  • That's a nice 1911 too. It's a Colt 1911 Series 70 Gold Cup, which is first off a rare and expensive gun these days, also, a Colt Gold Cup is like a really "high-end" 1911 variant. Plus on top of that, the gun has a 6.5" barrel instead of the 5" that nearly all full-size 1911's are made with. That's a custom gun and probalby is worth a pretty penny. It's tough to find any Series 70 Gold Cup Colts, and a longslide on top of that.

  • ha ha ha james bond this is tangerine dream good 1

  • mann, tarantino and scorsese... greatest directors of all time.

  • I wonder what will be michael mann's next movie project now that he's finished with PUBLIC ENEMIES? PUBLIC ENEMIES is one of the best movies he's made in a long time!

  • GOOD MOVIE!

  • head over to 'Manhunter'

  • This movie is fucking awesome one of my all time favorites james caan is the motherfucking man!

  • .45 best hand gun ever made

  • I prefer the Luger 08 .

  • i wouldn't say .45 is the best handgun ever made. there are a lot of shortcomings with .45 as opposed to say 9mm or others. .45 does have much better takedown power. problem is, most .45's have a lower carry capacity as compared to 9mm. 9mm is more accurate, cheaper, easier to get, most 9mm guns are louder. actually most hitmen favor .22 because it's really accurate, good for upclose shots as it does not create lots of blood spatter.

  • some 1911's can be purchased in 9mm

  • Which 1911's can be purchased in 9mm? To my knowledge, the 1911 design was only built in .45ACP, .357 Magnum (Coonan) and .38 Special. (The .357 Magnum Coonan could chamber .38 Special, and they made conversion barrels to convert the .45ACP barrel to a .38 Special barrel). I suppose you could custom-build a barrel to make a 1911-style gun chamber a 9mm round. Just never knew of any that were mass-produced.

  • check out kimber or any other MAJOR manufacturer's website asshole

  • The problem with 9mm too, and especially 9mm FMJ is overpenetration and lack of stopping power, as compared to say .45ACP. In some cases, I'd go so far as to say that .45ACP is better in certain situations. Police tend to carry 9mm because 9mm being smaller can fit more bullets into a magazine, which comes in handy when police become involved in shootouts. It's also a less-"lethal" bullet compared to a .45ACP. Generally, it also has higher accuracy. I say "generally" because there are exceptions

  • Now... 1911 is not God. There are alot of shortcomings with the 1911 design. One of the biggest ones is carry capacity. There are versions out there such as the Para, which can chamber more than 8 rounds. Typically speaking, nearly all 1911-style guns carry 8 rounds (7 in the mag and 1 in the pipe). The highest carry capacity in any .45 gun, excluding the Paras, is usually around 10 rounds. A .45 is good for self-defense. 9mm is a better service-style handgun.

  • and as far as capacity goes ...get a double stack 1911

  • if you want more capacity, get a glock 21 or a usp or something. seriously, paras aren't all that great. i carry a 1911 for conceal carry and double stacks are a bitch to hide. and no, you cannot buy 1911's chambered in 9mm unless they are custom made. just about every 1911 there is is made for .45acp. so fuck your asshole bitch.

  • here's a few springfield emp(enhanced micro pistol)and in full size, taurus makes them in 9mm and kimber makes them in .40, 9mm, .45acp and even .22lr

  • Just for the record. Mann was unhappy with what he had for the ending of the film and asked me to write something more in the style of Jimmy Paige (not TG). I came up with "Confrontation". I didn't play guitar on the track (I play keyboards). The reason the track on the cd is different from that on the film is that on the mixing stage Mann kept going back to my 24-tk and moving around the lead guitar. Safan.

  • Yeah, he emailed me to help set up tables for the cast and crew on Public Enemies after you helped him write.

  • Michael Mann sure loves his .45's.

James Caan is using one in this scene.

Both Niel McCauley and Vincent Hannah had .45's in Heat (De Niro had a USP, Pacino a 1911 model).

Vincent (Tom Cruise) had another USP in Collateral

  • Caan is using a custom Colt 1911 Series 70 Gold Cup .45 here. Normally the largest barrel on a 1911 is a 5", which they call the 'Government Model.' Here, the pistol Caan uses has a 6.5" barrel. McCauley used a SIG Sauer P220 .45 in Heat throughout almost the entire movie. In the scene when they were in the drive-in theatre, he has a USP. Hannah had the Colt Series 80 with a 4" barrel (Commander version) with the white grips. Cruise used a USP .45 in Collateral and other guns too.

  • but in collateral, throughout much of the film, he's got a usp .45, but he also has the smith & wesson 5906 .45 and he's got some other .22 caliber gun when he kills the guy in the jazz club.

my personal favorite of any .45 in any movie was in pulp fiction. when they had the stainless 1911's with the pearl grips.

  • got milk hahaha

  • James Caan is a great actor, I would have loved to see him in Scarface.

  • very cool film, you can tell its a Mann film from the style

  • Comment removed

  • I love that shot of Dennis Farina falling back three times after he gets shot. lol. Great Movie!

  • I bought the soundtrack just for this song. I wanted to bitch slap somebody when I realized this song wasn't even on that album.

  • There's a new version of the soundtrack which was revently releases that has this song on it. You can get in on amazon.

  • ahh fuck that i might not buy it now

  • Two words - thank you!

  • Why do so many people think this sounds like comfortably numb?

It's nothing like it. Not at all.

Safan did pull a Smithee - he is the lead and back up guitarist as well as keyboard.

This is a heavily layered track but I once saw old film of Safan playing the guitar tracks, which I hope will find its way onto DVD when the film is re-released.

So, its not TD and not Froese: Oh please! this is way out of his league.

    Gilmours too.

Wounded Bird Records has the current soundtrack with this.

  • just wat i like shot shot kill kill THE END sometimes that i all wanna see overall this movie is great shooter has a similar end but not as good (one of the best ending to a movie)

  • all of MM films end with a shootout that occurs at night (Heat, Miami Vice, Manhunter, Collateral, and Thief)! Well, not all but most.

  • By the way what happened to good soundtracks in movies?

  • Yes! Most soundtracks to movies are just a 'Hit List' to get us to recognize new bands. Sorry, but that is not a soundtrack to a movie. Not a good one, anyway. I still think John Williams is excellent. He's still around. But, yeah, 'Thief" is still one of my favorites. And that was 28 years ago. With any luck, maybe the 'Real' soundtrack will come back someday. I will be waiting. Good question 'djpamb! 'Thanks!!

  • I always preferred electronic synthesizer scores to orchestral or multi-artist accompaniment anyway

  • james caan is A SMOOTHIE watch him change mags!!

  • James Caan was a Badass in this movie!

  • one of the best films ever, i agree with you, one of michael mann`s best movies, one of best movies of 80´ amazing and full of real moments.

  • great movie great soundtrack by tangerine dream also check force majeure.edgar froese plays the guitar awesome!!!

  • Great movie! Very underrated.

  • James Caan was certainly bad-ass & SUPERSEXY back then.

  • Great Movie - Love the soundtrack!! roflmaoatcosmic

  • Notice the nappy headed Dennis Farina when he was only 16 lol.

  • I beleive dennis was more like 36.

  • Sounds like Jimi. PInk is Hendrix influenced so yeah it sounds like Pinks also.
