I'm 46 and I always loved this song, she's a natural beauty and one of the best female voices ever
Live on and rock on , make sure you show this to your spoiled corporate influenced children and let them know there is a better way. Songs with meaning where have they gone?
I do not get tired of this song (the original) or this version!! I love the run change she does at about 1:47. Great voice and she has aged beautifully!! Thanks!!
Brings me to tears. I was in 9th grade when this song was released. What this song stood for and how her voice projected it made it that more intense. Over 20 years later her voice still has the intensity. Thanks for the post.
Where are our protest singers today??? Where is anyone in pop who can write something this moving and lovely to unite us against the fools who would destroy the world??? Thank you, Melanie for bringing a tear to my eye and a song to my heart!
i love this song - it has been my favorite ever since i heard it - i used to go to work with my dad before i was even 3 - he'd play it in the truck and i'd beg him to just keep playing this one song for hours-fond memories-this has been and always will be the best song ever for me!
I was in Bethel NY in the summer of 1969..... She was AWESOME! and throughout the 70s as well.... BUT.............. although it's nice to see her live recently, this version is a FUNERAL DIRGE compared to her original... please, seek an original video.... :)
Back in the late '60s & early '70s, songs like this one bought out the best in everyone. @Transtar1980: you're so right. Love was in the air, in our hearts, in our minds and in our souls. And is was that love that bought the Vietnam War to an end. That's also when the vision of love for all and from all died. Hatred started to slowly creep in. Now ordinary people are scorned by the government if they try to make a difference and too many people blindly buy into it without thinking. Shame
Everybody here on youtube leaves out the intro, which is: "CANDLES IN THE RAIN!!!" yOU'RE LEAVING OUT A VERY IMPORTANT CONCEPT IN THE SONG!!! It doesn't hold together as a song. Kinda nice she did include it somewhere though. I still love her; i was too young to be a hippy, and too country. In Tennessee. Had to listen to her in the dark of the barn. alone.
A wonderful version . . . Just Awesome!

I have loved this song since it came out. What a great message. She is a soul poet and her voice rings like a bell of truth.

I didn't have a clue what this song was about back in 1969 when I was 16. I understand it better today.

Bring's back memories of a simpler time, and not so much hatred, as there is now.

One of the best songs describing the hippy age, ever.
Such love for one another and the universe.
''So raise the candles high, 'cause if you don't
We could stay black against the night
Oh raise them higher again and if you do
We could stay dry against the rain''
