@Nfinite13 In real life, coughing up blood can be caused by massive trauma being inflicted on a vital organ or the body as a whole. It's a big warning that death is very, very close...or already there. Most cases are, the lungs have been punctured and blood is gushing into it. And this can cause the person to drown even before the wound kills them. And when your lungs take on liquid, they try to expel it by forcing you to cough it up. I almost drowned once and was coughing up water for weeks.

But in anime shows, the reason EVERYONE coughs up blood is because it's a quicker, less horrific way of showing the viewers that someone is a goner. A more horrific way would have them split in two and have their skeleton and guts protruding from the remains.

@Kragdude Greed is also quite possibly the most manipulative character in the entire series. Fighting Edward in his state, sacrificing his life to force Ed to kill another, and then teaching him the secrets of the weaknesses of the Homunculi. With this fight, and the short conversation afterward, Greed fulfilled his promise to his henchmen to get revenge, by manipulating Ed and making him into a weapon to destroy the other Homunculi, giving him the knowledge and the motivation to do the job.

this is one of the MANY reasons this series is so much better then Brotherhood, for one, the idea's behind it (the hamunculi are not just the emotions of one being, they're people who were made by human transmutation, and want to become human again, this makes them sympathetic and gives them a much better reason for what they do) also it's not all about comedy, tho there is comedy in it, it's well placed, but it emotionally draws us into the series, and makes us feel for the characters

@petplatypus but that takes away the emotion, and as such the feelings you had toward them to where they become just generic villains (or in this case, the sacrificial pawns for the main villain) this is my gripe, they don't have that history to them, they're there simply to do Father's bidding, this makes them 1 dimensional (greed being the exception) and makes them like every other villain... I'm sorry, but if you're into the simplistic generic villains, great, but I prefer the first anime.
