This will not ruin your blackberry.  I did it, and it does work. However, the color does fade after a few days of use, even using a sharpie. This guy even sounds unsure of himself no wonder you guys are doubting him. It will be fine do not use a knife like he did, simply use your thumbnail and start at the top...

The original pearl may have the colored LED's but they're not that great.

In the original there's 4 LED's. They're placed in each corner of the trackball thing. When you place it to one color it only looks like one side of the trackball is lit up, not the whole thing.

Plus, on the original pearl you can see through the rings so you can see the LED through the little gap and it kinda sucks.

Doesn't light up well and doesn't cover the whole pearl.

I like this vid though maybe I'll try it :)

This is a good vid and a good way to change the color of the trackball but colorpearl is so much easier and safer.

Colorpearl doesn't work on the 8120 or 8130. RIM changed the hardware, so the new pearl's don't have the colour-changing LED behind the ball, it's in the top right corner of the screen now. We newer pearl owners need to resort to this if we want to change the colour of the trackball.

let me guess it a different model that doesn't have that LED type thus "color pearl" is useless. my advice buy the first BB pearl off of ebay and get the "color pearl" app that way you can keep changing the color as you please. If this were a bold than i could understand why but seriously no.

Just so everyone knows, the pearl 8100 is the only phone with colored lights behind the track ball. There is an app called ColorPearl that you can put on your pearl, but ONLY THE 8100!!! There are other apps too, but this one is very nice for its price (free). And taking apart your pearl in ANY WAY voids your warranty, so it's not too smart to take out the trackball and color it.
