It is sad to see once architectirally significant neighborhoods like douglas,Oakland, south chicago and the list goes on and on and they look like shit. Let us be real about these hoods they are rough and i would be happy to see some gentrification and so would many chicagoans.

I like what you have done by driving through the neighborhoods and showing what is there. I grew up in this Chicago neighborhood, moved to Oak Park as a preteen, and currently reside in Forest Park. I will say the speculations on what the people ( Kids ) were doing were unneccesary, though the video was well put together. Maybe not racist, but definitley stereotypical and biast against black neighborhoods.
It was a pretty stereotypical comment about what the kids were doing. However, I grew up in Oak Park, and spent many a days and nights on Austin & Madison... There are a lot of bad things that go on in general in the city of Chicago, but that doesn't mean every person you see fits into some type of box you unnecessarily put them into...

You're correct that I don't know the actual facts of how these kids came to be out of school, but 4 1/2 years as a social worker (long ago) leads to educated guesses about who was let out and who let themselves out.
The "Diana Dept" store you saw before reaching Pulaski was once the flagship store for Madigan's Department Store. Next door to it was once a 3500-seat movie theater called the Marbro. Across from the former medical building with the Walgreens, on the SE corner of Madison and Pulaski, used to be a Goldblatts that was destroyed in the riots of 1968 along with much of the old shopping district. The vacant lot east of Pulaski with a highrise project in the distance, was once a streetcar garage.

The point of this video is to make the author feel better about himself and his neighborhood. The creator of this video loves to rag on many neighborhoods. I saw a video he did of Pilsen, very condescending, had Mariachi music playing and said Pilsen looked like Guadalajara. He then interviews some Pilsen locals and makes comments about them. East garfield is jacked up, no doubt, but it's getting better. West Garfield is another story.

I will say the speculations on what the people ( Kids ) were doing were unneccesary, though the video was well put together. Maybe not racist, but definitley stereotypical and biast against black neighborhoods.

It was a pretty stereotypical comment about what the kids were doing. However, I grew up in Oak Park, and spent many a days and nights on Austin & Madison... There are a lot of bad things that go on in general in the city of Chicago, but that doesn't mean every person you see fits into some type of box you unnecessarily put them into...

we can agree to disagree... You implied that some of those kids weren't or you thought they cut school because they were hangin' out on the corners, which a lot of people do in Chicago, IL. You made a generalization because you didn't know whether or not they cut school or were let out early. @ the end of the day, it's no big deal, just my reaction to your observation.
Ps. I actually enjoyed the video; it brought back a lot of memories.

You're correct that I don't know the actual facts of how these kids came to be out of school, but 4 1/2 years as a social worker (long ago) leads to educated guesses about who was let out and who let themselves out.

The "Diana Dept" store you saw before reaching Pulaski was once the flagship store for Madigan's Department Store. Next door to it was once a 3500-seat movie theater called the Marbro. Across from the former medical building with the Walgreens, on the SE corner of Madison and Pulaski, used to be a Goldblatts that was destroyed in the riots of 1968 along with much of the old shopping district. The vacant lot east of Pulaski with a highrise project in the distance, was once a streetcar garage.

Many of these old buildings would be so beautiful if the owners would simply clean them up and put up some nice awnings. Unfortunately new developers want to put in suburban style shopping centers and mess everything up even more.

The point of this video is to make the author feel better about himself and his neighborhood. The creator of this video loves to rag on many neighborhoods. I saw a video he did of Pilsen, very condescending, had Mariachi music playing and said Pilsen looked like Guadalajara. He then interviews some Pilsen locals and makes comments about them. East garfield is jacked up, no doubt, but it's getting better. West Garfield is another story.
