In todays modern age there is no need to have a large army, thanks to nuclear weapons, which is why the EU countries don't have a large military. I hate when Europe and Americans argue at who is better. Eu is a great powerful place, not a country to be messed with, yes America does have bases there and EU policy does say they dont need a huge military budget because of the USA and NATO protecting it, but the EU does have an army, does have a HUGE economy. I am American but we dont run the world, not at all, the US needs the EU and vise versa. The fact is USA is powerful, just not as much. Please stop and just be happy EU+USA= allies. :)

@awsomemario8 You are correct in the fact that the EU and US are allied, and would go to the end to support each other (at least, history tells us that). The EU's GDP has been shrinking, while American's has been ever-expansive. Quite frankly, i find it sad that a coalition of 20 countries and pop. of over 550 million cannot out produce a country of 300 million, this is due largely to the fact that there is an EU. Seperate allied states would prove much more successful than the current system.

I don't think defeating the US in a total war scenario is dependent upon immediate invasion. A Sino-Russian alliance that controls the Atlantic and Pacific could starve the US and eventually bring it to its knees. The US doesn't possess anything near complete autarky, especially in oil and food. Then its just a matter of waiting till resources are low and population are too weak to resist and an invasion would be possible.

A lot of food the US consumes comes across the Pacific and a war against Russia and China would obviously end that, meaning the US would rely entirely on African and European trade routes staying open and not keeping the food for themselves. Don't forget that many people in the UK before WW2 would have said the same thing as you, yet Germany nearly succeeded using the same tactic when British naval superiority was far greater than the US today and Germany was in a geographically worse position.

Which is why the US drills oil in Texas, and Alaska, and California. We synthesize oil from natural gas, and can/have synthesized oil from coal. We import oil from Mexico and Canada. None of those sources would be subject to practical interdiction, even if you could find a Navy somewhere.
