I liked the last 2 Buck Rogers series. But due to the recent remakes from hollywood, I don't know if I should be very excited, or hope it doesn't get made.
@Mr351Nova you probably saw the one from the 70s. There was a 12 or maybe 13 episode serial in the 40s or 50s, it was black and white, Buck Rogers (played by Buster Crabbe I think) was a blimp pilot and had a younger friend, Buddy I think. The 2 of them crashed and used an experimental stasis gas to stay alive, their blimp was covered in snow till the 25th century. The battle against the forces of Killer Kane, Wilma is also in this one. It was a comic book before that, I found one once.
@Ralokone Same premise, if you think about it. An American astronaut whisked away to a fantastic setting and being forced to adapt to a strange cast of characters. Biggest difference is that There was no way for Buck to go back. Criton was doing everything he could to get back to earth.
Wow!! This is cool! Straight out of the original Sunday comic strips! Refreshing after the last 30 years of ships looking like they were rolled in model parts. I hear a Flash Gordon is coming out in 2012 in the same vein of this clip. Hope they do it well - visually it will be hard, since Star Wars ripped off so much from it.
Is this Buck Roger's clip part of a larger project? I'd love to see the whole thing!
Actually his name was originally Anthony, so in the book Armageddon 2419 AD he was known primarily as Tony, until Philip Francis Nowlan, the writer was by John Flint Dille, president of the National Newspaper Service syndicate to rename him Buck for the comic strip drawn by Richard Calkins.
This art direction is superb! Why doesn't anyone make Buck Rogers or Flash Gordon in this style? They're not supposed to be gritty or realistic. Give me colorful, exotic, imaginative, outrageous costume and FUN!
@gmansi Really, thats cool. I had always wanted them to do a show about Buck Rogers and Wilma Dearings daughter though. I thought that would have been a cool follow up to Gil and Erin's show.
Steve, there are the original 2 stories which appeared in Amazing Stories pulp mag in the 20's, the classic comic strip derived from this that ran until the 60's and revived in the 80's, the 1930's serial (and a rare promo film for the 30's toy range !), a 1950's TV series, the 80's tv series and the TSR game. There is also talk of a 3D movie version though I don't know how it will affect the Cawley project
*shrugs* I still love Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. If they can capture that feeling, I'm there. But for the love of god no Sci-fi channel Flash Gordon. That series was just horrid.
There are three versions in the Buck Rogers franchise. The 30's comic strip, which still persists as we see here, the 1979 show, and the TSR universe. All of them are entirely different interpretations. I prefer the TSR myself, only because it is one of the most comprehensive and realistic future realities ever created. I find the show version rather daft and cheesy, and the original comic too antiquated.
Cawley Entertainment has done an impressive job with their Star Trek: New Voyages and this teaser has a "Sky Captain"-like retro-sci-fi look to so I'm excited! BTW
Kerry Conran NEEDS to do a Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers feature film. Or better yet, Commander Cody! It would be like The Rocketeer only much better.
That looks just awesome; I really hope the whole production is as good as it looks on this teaser.
If you look at the early Buck Rogers comic strips & serials from the 1930's & 1940's you notice a huge influence on ideas used in Star Trek, Star Wars, etc.
My parents talk about going to the movie theaters as kids to watch the movie serials, like Buck Rogers. I saw them on TV when I was a kid. This looks really promising.
This look nice, and I hope Gil and everyone involved nothing but the best on this, BUT if there's no Twiki, no disco/Vegas clubs in space, no Legion Of Death, no Space Vampires, no football references to ship fight tactics, and no oversexed Ardala, then I probably won't watch. Sorry.
This is going back to the true original Buck Rogers of the pulp story Armageddon 2419 A.D. So no Twiki,disco/Vegas,Space Vampires, or any of the 70's conventions. But a oversexed Ardala might be workable.
As much as I hate that show, I agree with you. I don't like retro stuff like this, and I wished that James Cawley had made the ships to look like something from 'Star Trek' instead. Nevertheless, this is the Buck Rogers that we all will be seeing, as the Frank Miller movie didn't go through at all.
I think you're in the minority in this one. I've been following several blogs and reading up on this and many people are pleased with the retro concept. Personally, I think it will be great.
Looks great! Of course I'll need to see some action from live people to be convinced. Even so, a five star rating on this clip. And just based on that alone, I would be willing to pay to download the episode.
sir/miss... dont you think i know that?.. im just stating that it reminds me of Duck Dodgers because i know the buck rogers name but have never seen the buck rogers tv-series or read the comics. i have on the opposite, seen almost all duck dodgers episodes, and therefore i relate more to the duck dodgers name...
@Neville6000 True. BUT both Gil Gerard & Erin Gray are going to be appearing in the webseries(as Buck's parents), and Erin's daughter will be playing Buck's girlfriend.
In the 80's series, he did. This show has Buck Rogers coming out of the 1900's, so the tech is based on what people of that era thought the future was going to be.
Man, I used to love Buck Rogers. I fantasized about having sex with Hawk's wife. She was soooooo hot. I was like 10 years old, but I had such a crush on that lady. I wonder if Hawk will be in the movie.
ginito, I think what people are trying to get across is that no one cares if the thing could fly or not. It's fun, it's crazy and it's based on the original styles of the time. It's not meant to be anywhere near real. Although, if you have so much knowledge of aerodynamics you have to admit that with the right computer system and materials it could stay aloft just like the early stealth fighter-bombers would have the flight angle of a milk bottle if it weren't for computers.
@STFUwretch Not to mention that in the pulp series they had antigravity technology (as used in their jetpacks) that could have easily been adapted to keep even the most impossible flying craft aloft...
And dammit, it's about time we had sci-fi with big-ass Cadillac fins again! I do so love the classic feel in all that retro tech.
Yes i did, and expecting any kind of aerodynamic perfection on a one man spaceship in a Sci-Fi show is pointless. Might as well complain about the Star Trek shuttles which looks like whitpainted shoeboxes, and yet they fly due to some techno mumbojumbo.
LOL the X-Wing Fighters, Tie Fighters and Shuttles (or whatever else you want to include) don't need aerodynamics because [gasp] there's no air in space! A giant cube ship will perform equal to a teardrop shaped ship if they have indentical propulsion mechanisms. There is no drag, friction or gravity in space.
And as it´s sci-fi we can always think up some technical stuff to explain why they can fly in atmosphere anyway. Like anti-gravity generators, morphable forcefields... just from the top of my head.
Yes, i know this very well. But most smaller ships in sci-fi are atmosphere capable, even if aerodynamicaly unsound or downright impossible. Which can be easily explained with "Oh that´s because of the 'makeshitup' field generator which overrides the laws of physics when we feel like it".

@dudemanjac that is two different stories. Alot of literary stories can be broken down into simple archetypes.
Farscape, journey and the return (this happens alot in sci-fi and it angers me) which functioned more like, a stranger comes to town.
Buck Rodgers was just straight up, a stranger comes to down

I'm such a nerd. My first thought upon seeing the ship was this:
1: How is that aerodynamically sound?
2: Those windows have got to weigh some 400 pounds.
3: how is one little jet with no apparent gimbaled going to be able to adjust thrust vector to achieve such maneuvers?
And then I nerded out hard...
