• SAVE THE OCEANS......

  • Yes, don't befriend a wild animal, the government wants you to think you are separate from nature. Hence the reason feeding dolphins in FL is wrong, why does the government want us to be so separated from nature /animals? When we are but mere animals ourselves. Its ok to captivate them for profit, but please do not interact with them in the wild! Its bad for them naturally? You have to be pulling which one of my three legs?

  • i really really really wanted to see this documentary, but i missed it cos of work on the day it was broadcasted on BBC 2 (UK)...i hate work :(..anyways i have been waiting and waiting for the DVD to be released, any idea when that would be? i hear someones doing a book on him as well..thats lovely :D cant wait..details please...:D

  • Luna...to jest jedna z najpiękniejszych historii...moje córeczki płakały ja też nie mogłam opanować wzruszenia...

  • i see this film today amazing and i cry at the end. too bad we lost him:( .

  • i see this film today amazing and i cry at the end. too bad we lost him:( .

  • The movie is still on the BBC iPlayer for anyone inside the UK.

  • Who made the music in this documentary? :( I just love the piano music in this I would love to know the name.

I cried when I watched this documentary lol

    RIP Luna

  • 0:45 anybody outhere who can remember this boat ??

    callsign 30576 ??

  • This was on tv last nite, it blew me away and I was instantly drawn to Luna and the message that he was trying to communicate to us human beings, thankyou to everyone who made that film a reality and thankyou Luna for touching my heart

  • I think a chance like that between animal and man only comes once and they blew it, the fisheries board should have put in a speed limit for motor boats in the bay where luna was happy and playful, all he wanted was companionship from the only family he could find, "humans", because he was lost and probably scared just like any two year old!

  • Luna wanted to be friends with the people! He loved people and people loved him! It was something very special, Luna will give it a second time!! He was a very beautiful animal! We miss you, RIP Luna

  • Do you know how he died? He was hit by a boat propeller. Thats why they were trying to keep people from befriending him. Everytime he got close to a boat, his life was in danger.

  • I'll have to agree with Sammiebeans9. The whale did put his life in danger everythime he got close to boats... he was a baby whale so he proberly(?) got lost from his pack and had to find a substitude(?) for the familie he had lost.

  • This is wrong. If the orca wants to make friends with people LET IT!

  • I agree.

  • Luna means "Moon" in Spanish. A great name for a great animal.

  • Also means moon in italian. 8)

  • Who are these pitful examples of the human species? Who gives them or the government rights over any animal that is not endangering them in any way? Perhaps, other species are trying to communicate to us in ways that they think we can understand. Showing hatred towards friendliness, meaness towards kindness, anger towards love is dispectable, those that see this should absolutely protest vigerously against this intolerance!

  • stupid old lady, what's wrong with being friends with a wild animal. If the Animal want to create friendship with somebody, then there's nothing wrong with it. It's a very special thing if an animal is going out of it's way to connect with people.

  • The friendship is not the problem, the problem is that it is teaching the orca that it is safe to swim so close to boats. And that's what killed him.

  • @waipolipoli

While it is sad that the whale was separated from his pod and was forced to seek human companionship, I understand why the local authorities were against human interaction. But I have to agree with you, if humans did not respond, he would still seek humans, and still be in danger, just without the affection and friendship that people offered.

  • Ugh, that god forsaken woman caused every problem and somehow thought she was being helpful. "We can't be friends with the whale cause we'll end up hurting it" "We can't get in the way of natures path!" Self righteous, 'know it all' bitch. Since when are people not a product of nature too?

If a dog nurses an orphaned kitten should we not allow it because it is inter species compassion and is somehow unnatural? Not allowing compassion IS interference with nature. Stupid cunt. UGH!

  • I don eave knew..

  • Does anyone know if this will ever be made available on DVD? I have checked my local independant film theatre; they will not be showing this film :-(

  • This is a beautiful document about Luna this Orca is special to me, he was making friends with people and Luna has touched peoples hearts,

It was very sad to me that he died, but he is with God now and I know for sure we will see him again, We will never forget you Luna

    RIP LUNA

  • OMG get those hands of that whale! I really don`t like her. He proberly would be alive this day if she didnt make those rules. Luna was lonley. That Canadian Goverment should of stayed out of this!

  • Wow. Amazing, touching, sad...I'm changed.

  • *R.I.P* *Luna*

  • Poor baby :'(

    Rest in peace Luna<3 :'(

  • Luna!! its so weird seeing my name everywhere.... this is so sweet btw.

  • I touched Luna's face, but Luna touched my heart. What an amazing experience it was to have that whale with us.

  • Even with the best of intentions. We should not

have kept him as a kind of pet around that town. We should have reunited him with his family like

Springer A73, maybe then he would still be alive!

  • Where can u get this film/documentary? i looked on ebay and other sites but cant find anywhere to buy it for the UK??

  • The DVD will be released later this year - and stay tuned for more details about a UK release.

Thanks for your interest in the film

  • Will this DVD be aviable in germany, too? I guess it will not be with subtitles but I really want to buy this movie no matter if it´s only in english.

  • 5 stars

  • I saw this movie in vancouver when it came to a small theatre a couple weeks(?) ago.

I really enjoyed and it was really sad , too bad there wasnt lots of people on opening night. the movie might not circulate because of that...

  • This was a really really good documentary. This documentary may not appeal to the masses, but if u watch this doc, it will touch the core of your heart (if you have one). RIP Luna

  • Luna was killed when he went to greet a tug boat during a storm not far from when I live. (The tug boat captain was devastated when Luna was caught in the propeller). Luna so craved companionship. It was a heartbreaking situation from beginning to end. I'm not sure I have the guts to watch this movie yet. One day.

  • She died??

  • he was killed by a ferry boat.go to Orca Network for whole story, he was a member of A pod and got lost. they wanted to capture him and return him to his family but the First Nation Indians messed up the capture.

  • Sorry correction, Springer was a rescue, returned to A pod. Luna was a Northern Resident Member of L pod. Spring was returned to his family and is still with them.

  • Thanks. This is so sad :-((

  • Amazing!!!!!

  • Beautiful video, beautiful Luna :)

  • This is so sad. He had a short life and will be remembered. The people who helped him are to be congratulated unlike what we did to Collette.

  • does anyone know if this documentary will ever come to montreal?

  • This trailer is SO touching. It brings tears to my eyes, but I also know that Luna had much to teach us. Thank you so much to the filmmakers for producing this documentary. I feel so happy that because of your film, Luna will be remembered. I have not seen the film yet, but I hope to one day. Any plans to release it in the U.S.? Thanks again. Rest in peace, Luna.

  • It was an EXCELLENT movie--makes you think, makes you grieve.

  • I haven't seen the movie yet but the trailer alone touches me very deeply. An animal able to make a connection with a human being-amazing and beautiful. And looking at him I see a young animal, gazing with dreamy eyes, smiling slightly and sadly.

  • This is one of the best docs I've ever seen!! You have to see it!!

  • Thanks!

Please tell all your friends in Vancouver to come to come out this weekend to see SAVING LUNA on the big screen. Showtimes 2, 4, 7 and 9, at the Ridge Theatre, 3131 Arbutus, Vancouver.

  • i cry everytime i watch this.

  • I love this trailer. It puts me in tears and it's so touching. I'm definitely going to watch this film. It's so sad and cute...

  • To whom are his friends. We? Or of there own kind? What ever they may be.We do not belong to them but they should have a chance on this earth like any living creature. To save them is to protect the enviroment as we should be doing our selves.

  • everytime i see this trailer I cry...awe

Poor luna, RIP , I will always keep u in my heart

  • If I didn't know anything about him and I saw this killer whale coming up to my boat I would have touched him, people should have taken more control in the first place.

  • I was one of the lucky ones who got to interact directly with Luna. He was a very special gift to the people of Nootka Sound and we miss him. He is in our hearts forever.

He was so playful. Alot like a huge dog. And so gentle. I can't understand why anyone ever thought that it would be harmful for people to interact with him. And I can't stand the attitudes of those who resented him.

But there were many of us who treated him with kindness and respect and will always treasure his memory.

  • when will be the release in europe? i'm from the netherlands and i'm dying to see it

  • Such a cute little guy, may he RIP

what I dont get though is how all of these naturalists and people interacted with him, yet at the same time scolded those who interacted with him.

  • There was so much confusion over the whole thing, even among the First Nations here locally. He was really unique and for whatever reason they chose to prevent the efforts of Fisheries to capture him. I think there was more involved than their stated claim that he was their reincarnated chief. They knew that there was big money involved in trying to relocate him to an aquarium.

  • Comment removed

  • I have to honestly say, this is the first time I've heard that he was going to be captured for an aquarium. I've gotten the impression, and it's been stated several times, they they were going to capture him, rehabilitate him, and then release/relocate him in San Juan, Washington. Exactly like they did with Springer. But they were NOT going to put in an aquarium solely for entertainment.

  • No offense icewolfbc, even though you may have interacted with Luna, I think your wrong. Why? Because, for one, it's currently illegal for Orcas in British Columbia and the US to be captured for aquariums. This law was enacted in either the mid to late 70s or sometime during the 80s. So, this law has been in place for quite a while now. No offense but, it's really apparent that Luna was going to be relocated back home and remain free.

  • Okay...I'll buy that. That was one local rumor anyway. Whether there's substance to it or not, it was out there. For now, apart from further evidence in favor of the idea, I'll retract that one.

  • I also heard that they had determined which pod he belonged to and if what you guys are saying is true, they were probably thinking about trying to reunite him with them. There were serious reservations about that course of action, however, because the Strait of San Juan is a major shipping corridor, and knowing Luna's propensity to buddy up to big boats, his survival chances out there might have been even less.

  • Yes, reseachers had determined which pod Luna belonged to and even who his mother is. And yes, they were also planning on reuniting him... You know, Sringer would also buddy up to boats but once she was reunited with her family that stopped immediately. Reseachers were hopeing Luna would do the same thing. However, Luna was older than Sringer so reintroduction might have been more difficult....then again it might not have. We'll never know.

  • i live in washington and i'm at the southern part of puget sound. it is such a wonderful place to live. i love it. most 99 percent of people here say they hate it and its too cold and rainy but i don't mind cause i love living next to an amazing and rare estuary of marine life. and just two hours up to northern washington, where the strait of juan de fuca is, is where we have three HUGE pods of resident orcas :D how lucky are we? i go up there frequently to visit them

  • im pretty sure i saw one of those pods, and like half of another... like L and K maybe???? i have no idea i cant remember xD... it was in august.... :)

  • I wish I lived near Bristol.

  • Good question!!

  • Why would it be the worst thing for him if you became friends with him!

  • Comment removed

  • Yes, we expect that it will be released in the US this fall, and we will certainly provide dates here as soon as they are finalized.

I can now post a comment if I click the hyperlink from an e-mail, but it doesn't seem to work if I log in to YouTube directly. Not sure why.

With respect to your question about human contact -- I can't say for sure, but I would guess that Luna would have preferred orcas to humans. But in the absence of orcas, maybe humans could have helped fill a gap for him.

  • Sorry that our website text ruined the video for you - I put it there so that people would know how to find out when and where the film is screening. A lot of people have been asking (and I've been getting error messages whenever I try to post comments here.)

Thanks, everyone, for your interest in SAVING LUNA. It will be released this fall in theatres, and on TV and DVD after that. Please stay tuned! And check out our website...

  • We will remember you, Luna. Rest in peace, my friend.

  • The one thing I don't understand is why did the native indians(or whoever) got in a canoe and lured him miles out of sea away from capture? I mean, I thought they were going to capture Luna and that same day release in San Juan with his family. Thats what they did with Springer, another orca who was lost from is pod and now he's fine. Because of this reason I can't help but blame those that prevent him from being release to his family. Someone please explain.

  • i see ur piont but the problem is that we cannot under any circumstances beliave human beings because ppl always lie about everu freaking thing even about there own selves and how you trust that they dont they take to a zoo and say well he was talented if you want save something and you really care you have to do it on your own and never ask for help from any one but only ask the ppl that love and care as much as you do to help you and youll find it more relaxing

  • I agree Southern, he should of been captured.

  • It's even hard to watch the 'trailer' all these years later. My sadness cuts so deep about Luna.

Thank you Suzanne and Mike for your success in keeping the story of Luna alive. I know I will never forget but I do await being able to purchasing the movie on DVD.

  • Poor Luna,

    I never saw him,

    But my dad Did.

He said he would take me to him one day,

But the next thing i new,

I heard of his death :(

    It was horrible,

    RIP Luna ♥

  • r.i.p luna

  • This is a beautiful story about a wonderful marine creature, most poignant and powerful in its visual message.

  • This was the most powerful documentary I have ever seen. It shows the pure essence that Luna was all about - and the whole dilemma it caused for people that cared about him. I saw it at the Vancouver Film Festival and I sure hope there will be another opportunity to watch it again soon.

I know I have said this to you in person already - Mike and Suzanne..... thanks from the bottom of my heart for making this film and congrats on its success!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Powerful. This movie is a must-see.

  • how do i watch the film can i rent it or buy it?

  • I almost cried watching this how dare you make such heart braking videos!

  • Regret ,not moving back Luna to his family, a very big regret -R.I.P little friend- from Nicolas

  • I was able to attend the opening viewing of this film in Vancouver and it was wonderful and so sad at the same time. We will miss that little whale. Hi to Suzanne and Michael from the lady with the tatoo of Luna, Sharon McPhail

  • See this film on the big screen at the 5th San Francisco Ocean Film Festival, February 1-3, 2008 at the Cowell Theatre, Fort Mason Center.

  • I have a book about Luna and Springer called "Operation Orca." Its a new book. When does this movie come out? I want to buy it.

  • Congratulations on a job well done (not to mention winning so many awards, with more to come!)

I'm so proud that I know people who have such a love of nature that they are able to bring this story to others. Humans need a greater understanding and respect for those amazing beings in nature; we share this world with them.

Thank you for dedicating your time and energy to bringing this story to us. Caroline

  • the last shot of luna just brings me to tears. well done.... it's been an unreal journey.
