I a surprised I had not sen this one here before. Never heard this song and I have most all Matt's music. I have to admit not a "catchy" tune, but maybe if I listen a bit more will grow on me as you say. Still Matt is the greatest Male singer of our times.
This is a fine song but it took me quite a while to take to it....now it's one of my favorites. Matt Monro was in his forties when he recorded this and his voice was at it's best...this is just one of those lovely songs that are now forgotten from Matt Monro and many other great artists.
This is a finely written sensitive song about man whose wife/partner has returned home again after an estrangement. The man obviously loves her very much and is prepared to work the differences out. Mat sings exquisitely and is well supported by fine orchestra conducted and aranged by George Martin. .To many this song may appear plain and lifeless. But to the sensitive it is very touching presentation. In an often selfish and uncaring world, i can understand why it wasn't a great success.
George Martin, Mat's internationally aclaimed producer (also the Beatles') had this to say re Mat." Mat had the rare gift of getting to the heart of the lyric and with his supurb voice, delivering it in such a way that it became a personal message to the audience. And this showed in his personal life too. Always outward looking, he had a terrific sense of humour and seemed to find only the best in people. Mat will sing on and I shall always hear him. "' EMI record cover Mat Will sing Forever.
@rosella969 It's plain to see that your a real Matt Monro fan!...Frank Sinatra once said that the three best male singers in the world were himself, Matt Monro and Tony Bennet and who could argue with that! I have always thought that not only has Matt Monro an incredible voice which can reach and sustain the high notes better than any other singer, but his voice also has a unique warmth that very few singers of any era can match. I saw Matt live here in Ireland in 1974.....it was unforgettable!
