It was all by ear, I found the chords in the song book to be only a general reference where you could play up to 4 chords for any one in the song book.
Alway been one of my favorite SD songs too...you play alot like my brother....and he;s DAMN good too...Rock on Bro...and hope you continue to get over that stroke!
Nice, very nice indeed. Like u, I became frustrated with the lack of tabs for this. I worked a good portion of the song out myself (I was playing the intro a couple of octaves lower tho), but Im glad I came across this video. It cleared a few things up for me, and I love how the "9-5" bit sounds now.
Quick question tho, what key is this song in? I assumed it to be in the key of Dm, as it starts on that chord, but the second solo is played over the Am pentatonic scale? Cld u clear this up 4 me?
I was thinking about this video and your terrific playing when I saw The Dan last night (on the final night of their Think Fast tour). You've got a huge amount of talent with very little ego, huzzah!
Only strings and hands(not even faces)abandoned Ego's, this is what the world should be,one great musical composition instead of gossips, soaps and other banalities,a beautiful composition, well played, greetings Victor.
This was by ear, I have never found music that captures the intricate details Steely Dan's music. Foer example, the melodic high notes in the passage that has the Dm7 and Em7 in (you do his 9 to 5)... had to listen and then find it.
Thanks Stratman. Check out my video...I did a quick lesson on "Dont fear the reaper". My tone is similar to yours. But I use a Roland GX700 for that, into the board (whatever is handy). I like your taste...good stuff.
"Check out Guitar George, he knows all the chords". Cool vid, I checked you out. I do have other setups, live I use my Mesa Boogie Mark III, I often record with a Vox ToneLab, which is way schweet.
I heard the vox was good..I need to hear it personally. I am a bit of a tone nut. I will do another instructional video soon, for fun. I truly admire your "hand sound"..if that makes sense. In your playing I can really hear the notes, wrung from your hands. Thats a rare..and good thing.
Thanks GtrGeorge, I have several setups, I think on this one I was using a Digitech 2112 Studio guitar preamp and effects (bought it in '96). I run that through a Mackie 1402-VLZ mixer, then into Mackie HR824 monitors.
Gotta give you props here: First, for picking a great "non-hit" Dan song, one of my faves. Second, for having a good melodic/harmonic sense, playing an accompaniment that works well. No hot-dogging/guitar wanking!
I'd love to hear what you do with Al Stewart's "Carol." It was one of the first pieces I learned, but I couldn't do the run in that song very well. (I think Peter White does it in that song.)
Dan, there are some Dan solos that remain ever enigmatic that I may never figure out. For me, its the solos from Bodhistatva and Do it again that still punish me.
stratman! awesome job man! thanks for sharing your knowledge for others to learn

Nice stuff, one of my favorite Steely Dan tunes. Try a C6 for the second chord instead of Cmaj7, barred at the 5th fret, 8-7-5-5-5-5.
