  • stratman! awesome job man! thanks for sharing your knowledge for others to learn

  • HoT!!!

  • Is that one chord a F#7#5?

  • where did you learn the chords from ?

  • It was all by ear, I found the chords in the song book to be only a general reference where you could play up to 4 chords for any one in the song book.

  • great job ! this album is killer !!!

  • Alway been one of my favorite SD songs too...you play alot like my brother....and he;s DAMN good too...Rock on Bro...and hope you continue to get over that stroke!

  • Really great job.

  • such a great song..cant buy a thrill has some of the best guitar work on it

  • wow- how cool!

  • Great job on the video. I like your playing your style along with the Dan. You rock dude. Peace. One Love.

  • very cool, I've watched this about forty times and it's good.

  • I'm still angry at the lack of tabs for the lead part. I don't want to play the chords. -_-

  • Why do I feel like a monkey smashing a rock on my fret board? i'll keep practising!

    Great work Stratman.

  • Nice, very nice indeed. Like u, I became frustrated with the lack of tabs for this. I worked a good portion of the song out myself (I was playing the intro a couple of octaves lower tho), but Im glad I came across this video. It cleared a few things up for me, and I love how the "9-5" bit sounds now.

Quick question tho, what key is this song in? I assumed it to be in the key of Dm, as it starts on that chord, but the second solo is played over the Am pentatonic scale? Cld u clear this up 4 me?

  • sweet jebus dood, your good.

  • Nice stuff, one of my favorite Steely Dan tunes. Try a C6 for the second chord instead of Cmaj7, barred at the 5th fret, 8-7-5-5-5-5.

  • Great job! Great guitar work. This is one of my fav Steely Dan songs.

  • It`s my second fave after Countdown to Ecstasy, great choice of song and execution, lots going on ,but all very subtle 5/5

  • I was thinking about this video and your terrific playing when I saw The Dan last night (on the final night of their Think Fast tour). You've got a huge amount of talent with very little ego, huzzah!

  • right

  • Garbage comment from 68ray. Sounded perfect - keep it up, man! I'd love to see some Who tunes.

  • @Stratman1920 I wish I had that sound!

  • This album is the best. And you-- you need to be my guitar teacher, because my teachers sucks. Telling us that all music is is reading notes.

  • Im glad someone loves this stuff as much as I do

    And those lyrics

Anybody on the street has murder in his eyes

You feel no pain yet you're younger than you realize!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @JoeChrisMorris we are millions now

  • "My old School" Next! Haha, all these videos are great!

  • yes! thank you! this is one of my favorite songs, and nobody, not even some Steely Dan fans know it or even respect it...but I'm glad it's here

  • Now there's an obscure song. VERY well done. Great to see guitarists taking on this challenging material.

  • great job. you rock. try wearing a wristband.

  • A wristband? Why

  • that was great!such a superb song,off a truly great album.

  • thanks my friend, this song gets almost zero attention so I am glad that somebody enjoyed it.

  • Thanks! The tablature I found for this song in other places was utter garbage, looks like you got it right...

  • so good...

    Otavio...

    Brazil ...

  • I can't download this song can someone send me it!!! message me pls

  • nvm i found someone.

  • you gotta admit, this is one very cool song.

  • Smooth, nice work.

  • Only strings and hands(not even faces)abandoned Ego's, this is what the world should be,one great musical composition instead of gossips, soaps and other banalities,a beautiful composition, well played, greetings Victor.

  • thanks Victor! I appreciate your comments.

  • Wow you did this by ear? I am a huge S/D fan, and now a fan of yours too! 25 starz!

  • Yeah, I had to learn this one and I have never seen a tab for it, so now its out there for everyone. Thanks for your comments.

  • did you play it by ear, or did you find music?

  • This was by ear, I have never found music that captures the intricate details Steely Dan's music. Foer example, the melodic high notes in the passage that has the Dm7 and Em7 in (you do his 9 to 5)... had to listen and then find it.

  • Stratman...loved it and your playing is prime dude! Glad to see some old Dan fans can Wail with em"

  • That's really nice guitar playing and a super sound.I'm gonna have to get one of those Strats.....Soon!!!

  • I heard it was you talkin 'bout a world where all is free.... naaah, just kidding five stars from me..!

  • thanks buddy

  • That was just beautiful,thanks Stratman1920,just magic!!! 100 stars.

  • thanks, glad you enjoyed it.

  • Damn, U got some chops... Luv'ed the vid. Tnks.

  • Thanks buddy

  • Thanks Stratman. Check out my video...I did a quick lesson on "Dont fear the reaper". My tone is similar to yours. But I use a Roland GX700 for that, into the board (whatever is handy). I like your taste...good stuff.

  • "Check out Guitar George, he knows all the chords". Cool vid, I checked you out. I do have other setups, live I use my Mesa Boogie Mark III, I often record with a Vox ToneLab, which is way schweet.

  • I heard the vox was good..I need to hear it personally. I am a bit of a tone nut. I will do another instructional video soon, for fun. I truly admire your "hand sound"..if that makes sense. In your playing I can really hear the notes, wrung from your hands. Thats a rare..and good thing.

  • Great video. Great Sound. What gear do you use?

I get a similar sound, myself. Gotta love them strats!!!

  • Thanks GtrGeorge, I have several setups, I think on this one I was using a Digitech 2112 Studio guitar preamp and effects (bought it in '96). I run that through a Mackie 1402-VLZ mixer, then into Mackie HR824 monitors.

  • Wow you got a great ear.Just made a great song better!

  • thanks, give it a try and see if you can do it.

  • Thanks buddy, I am not familiar with the song you mention, but will download and check it out.

  • Gotta give you props here: First, for picking a great "non-hit" Dan song, one of my faves. Second, for having a good melodic/harmonic sense, playing an accompaniment that works well. No hot-dogging/guitar wanking!

I'd love to hear what you do with Al Stewart's "Carol." It was one of the first pieces I learned, but I couldn't do the run in that song very well. (I think Peter White does it in that song.)

  • Outstanding! I couldn't even play along with Denny Dias if I tried. -Dan

(Frustrated classic guitarist who has only tied a few Steely Dan chords. Someday!)

  • Dan, there are some Dan solos that remain ever enigmatic that I may never figure out. For me, its the solos from Bodhistatva and Do it again that still punish me.

  • My pleasure! Your right, it is from Can't buy a thrill. Enjoy

  • This sounds like early SteelyDan...Can't buy a Thrill?

Cool Stuff. Fagan & Becker are musical geniuses. You sound pretty good your self. Thanks for sharing that Grove.

  • What a nice way to end my day.! U r so awesome! U know it is my dream to learn how to play couple songs on guitar :)

  • Someone as smart as you could get free lessons.

  • Starman1920, now question is who will teach!. I am really digging your guitar playing. U r good and I am sure you know it :)
