Why can't light go faster. or light go slower. What if a sun in another solar system could make photons go faster by being more powerfull than our own sun. The photon would still be travelling at its normal speed from 1 carbon atom to another. What I don't understand, is that if it is a curvature of space-time, then is the warping done by the weight of the object or the size of the object? In other words, is gravity stronger in a larger object that weighs less; or a smaller object that weighs more? And if it is the latter, how can an object physically weigh anything in space? @IloveYOUviruses Think about it, in order to observe motion in any number of dimensions you need one extra dimension. 1 dimension requires 2, 2 dimensions requires 3, and 3 dimensional motion requires 4, the 4th being time. You couldn't observe anything moving in three dimensions without time. Einstein describes waves in four dimensions, so you would need 5 dimensions to really visualize it. I don't think Einstein or anyone else can do that, the trampoline model is really the best way.

So why is it that matter can not achieve light speed regardless of how much energy is used to push it? That would rule out light as being a particle I'd think. Oh yeah and the other thing that "changes" the speed of light is time distortion. Like how there would be an age difference between 2 atoms in smaller gravity vs that of a higher gravity. Light moving through an area near high density objects time/space with higher density field would arrive later because of time slowing.

@VarvaraBell Think of it like the ball in roulette, as long as it keeps a high enough speed, it will stay in "orbit", it only rolls in when friction makes its speed too slow. Earth is not subject to friction, and its orbit is (at least fairly) stable.

What I believe you're suggesting is that space is finite and expanding at an exponential rate, but I believe that space is infinite and near the end of the 13.7 billion light year across is a void (aka space without matter) This space always existed and there is no need to for a space-time fabric to travel to it for it to exist.

What seems to have escaped most people's attention and mine also for the last 3 decades is that if light is emanating from a torch and the torch is on a train, is the light itself on the train? The light beam does not exist until it has left the torch unlike a ball thrown from someone's hand which exists before being thrown. If the light doesn't exist until it leaves the torch can it be said to be "on" the train? If it isn't it will not gain momentum from the train. No need for any theory.

But the speed of light is ALWAYS the speed of light. It cannot get any faster. A ball being thrown while on a train receives the velocity of the train in addition to its speed. @lcabosa Frequency is not related to momentum of light, momentum = effective mass x velocity, special relativity state that speed of light in vacuum is the same in all inertial frames of reference and is independent of the motion of the source. Of course the effective mass of light will stay constant no reason for it to change. Therefore the momentum of light will always be the same.

@jqs1943 No, because heat diminishes very quickly over the space of a vacumn, because there is very little to carry it. Light simply doesn't react very much to this because it has independent particles, and it's speed never changes. The only reason it may flicker is because it is interferred by air in the last milliseconds from the beginning of our atmosphere into our retinas.The little heat that makes it to earth is majority transferred by IR and UV rays, which are a components of light.

If I've got my knowledge right, a photon is the virtual particle that is part of the wave-particle duality of light. Also, all objects reflect a certain degree of light, but they also absorb a large quantity. Because light travels so fast, it is absorbed and reflected so fast that we can not visibly trap it. The frequency reflected defines the colour.
@VineFynn I'm in complete dissagreement with the standard atomic theory as it was formulated as an abstract from an imaginary plane that has no association to a real foundation. The atom, by my theory, can be calculated and is a weave of energies (frequencies) that has the harmonics of light and heat plus more, that when excited by black energy (a hyper frequency) it responds by radiating its spectral field in the form of light. Day light is earth's atmosphere reacting to these hyper energies.

@jqs1943 I'm not referencing to your outlook on the superstring frequencies of matter, I'm simply stating that the logic in saying "if light and heat came from the sun, would it not be logical to assume that space would be lit up and extremely hot?" is wrong.
@VineFynn Light and heat are inherent components of matter. They're makeup is that of a group of frequencies that resonate at a particular level producing the effects of light and or heat. These two are energy fields of an ethereal nature; and particles are of a physical nature. The photon theory is wrong. The atomic theory is wrong.
Light doesn't travel. These explanations are parts of my theory of Sunotics that explains the nature of the universe since prior to the dawn of time.

@orderedntropy Well, the speed of light is not a variable if the medium it travels through is exactly the same--the speed of light is different when traveling through air than when traveling through water. Also, temperature and pressure affect this phenomena as well.
Both Newton and Einstein are icons of physics. Einstein`s SR was motivated by Maxwell`s equations and the Michelson-Morley experiment (knowledge that wasn`t known to Newton).
The most upsetting thing about this video, is that it makes Newton and Einstein look like opposites, enemies. While in truth they are walking hand in hand, both contributing to science in their own way, in their own right.

1. Just use Newtonian theory for your trampoline analogy. 2. Just like light rays (null geodesics) can be deflected by a gravitational field, so too can a material particle/object moving along its time-like geodesic. If its velocity is the orbital velocity, and its not perturbed, a stable orbit is formed.
Speed off light is still the universal limit, sub-atomic particle do weird things with dimensions.

@mucalinda there were already several hints and evidence of it, there was the Michelson Morley Ether experiment and the Maxwell equations for electromagnetism that predicted that an electromagnetic field would travel at a constant speed in space (I think it was calculated closed to the speed of light or it is the same I don´t remember right now).The genius of Einstein was recognizing that Ether was not necessary if the speed of light was the limit, & light was actually an electromagnetic field

The photon would still be travelling at its normal speed from 1 carbon atom to another. What I don't understand, is that if it is a curvature of space-time, then is the warping done by the weight of the object or the size of the object? In other words, is gravity stronger in a larger object that weighs less; or a smaller object that weighs more? And if it is the latter, how can an object physically weigh anything in space? @b0gdanB If a planet is in a CIRCULAR orbit around a star, then there is a critical speed the planet must have so it doesn't spiral in due to the star's gravitational pull, or spiral out do to too much centrifugal "force." The latter scenario being impossible. But we are in an ELLIPTICAL orbit with the sun at one of the foci. Elliptical orbits do not require a critical speed for the planet to orbit. Say the earth's speed was higher, the two foci would spread apart and our orbit would elongate

So if the earth goes even slower to the point where the two foci meet to create ONE focal point, then the earth will have a circular orbit, if the earth goes any slower, it will spiral in toward the sun

@IloveYOUviruses Think about it, in order to observe motion in any number of dimensions you need one extra dimension. 1 dimension requires 2, 2 dimensions requires 3, and 3 dimensional motion requires 4, the 4th being time. You couldn't observe anything moving in three dimensions without time. Einstein describes waves in four dimensions, so you would need 5 dimensions to really visualize it. I don't think Einstein or anyone else can do that, the trampoline model is really the best way.

So why is it that matter can not achieve light speed regardless of how much energy is used to push it? That would rule out light as being a particle I'd think. Oh yeah and the other thing that "changes" the speed of light is time distortion. Like how there would be an age difference between 2 atoms in smaller gravity vs that of a higher gravity. Light moving through an area near high density objects time/space with higher density field would arrive later because of time slowing.

For light/photon we have BOTH: 1. E=p/c, and 2. E=hv=hc/λ.
Therefore, although light travels in vacuum with fixed speed `c`, its `λ` may vary. As it varies `E` will either increase or decrease, affecting `p`. Hence, light CAN "pick up" momentum and also lose it.

Issac Newton's mathematical theory is wrong, for in order that mass may affect mass, both bodies must be interrelated within a common medium such as gas or liquid. A magnet's mass doesn't affect another magnet's mass but their fields interact with each other to create attraction or repulsion. Take away the magnetic qualities of the two, and nothing happens between them. Put the two in a container with a liquid, stir the liquid and the two will react to the energy of the motion of the liquid.

@timunpic Because it is impossible to produce a perfect circle with chaos theory in play. Look up "orbital eccenticity" for an explaination. Earth's orbit is close to a circle, but not perfect. This is critical for evolution.

@VarvaraBell Think of it like the ball in roulette, as long as it keeps a high enough speed, it will stay in "orbit", it only rolls in when friction makes its speed too slow. Earth is not subject to friction, and its orbit is (at least fairly) stable.

While we are not subject to friction, we are subject to other sources of gravity and are so losing spin and momentum. Gravity does never completely diminish, as the strength of gravity is the square of it's distance, and so can not be completely eliminated.

Also if you could get close enough to a massive object such as a black hole (without going past the event horizon) and stayed there for 5 years then when you come back to earth everyone will have aged 10 years. So you will be 5 years older but everyone on earth will be 10 years older. Crazy but true!
Also if it was possible to travel faster than light we would be able to go backwards in time!

It is true though, I really don't see why gravity needs to travel, I don't see the problem with not seeing the sun destroy itself before we feel the effect. We do know what the mass is for higgs boson, I think even I can calculate it.. At 95% confident it is 114.4 GeV/c^2. cba to conver to kg. :P

What I believe you're suggesting is that space is finite and expanding at an exponential rate, but I believe that space is infinite and near the end of the 13.7 billion light year across is a void (aka space without matter) This space always existed and there is no need to for a space-time fabric to travel to it for it to exist.

@DeviousBetrayer i believe that space exists only when someone occupies that area of space/time.therefore space as we know has a finite size yet could expand to an indefinite size. and the universe as we know it has a minimum size of 190(ish with uncertainty) light years.

@DeviousBetrayer @DeviousBetrayer We don't know that space always existed. Space has a 4th dimensional curve which causes it to fold back onto itself 4th dimensionally. This means that if you could travel long enough and far enough in a straight line in one direction, you'd eventually come back to where you started, just like a straight line on the surface of a sphere. Hence there is a finite amount of space. Space is never completely void; there is zero-point energy everywhere in space.

@DeviousBetrayer If space is infinite, then it won't expand, if it doesn't expand, then gravity would "collapse" down space, of course gravity may not able to "attract" space. Also galaxies wouldn't be accelerating. Not only that, the temperature of the universe won't be as hot. Also UWGTrebleClef is right, space is curved, how do we know? Because there's a horizon very far away. Lol one more thing, I think your believe is called steady state theory, created by Fred Hoyle.

What seems to have escaped most people's attention and mine also for the last 3 decades is that if light is emanating from a torch and the torch is on a train, is the light itself on the train? The light beam does not exist until it has left the torch unlike a ball thrown from someone's hand which exists before being thrown. If the light doesn't exist until it leaves the torch can it be said to be "on" the train? If it isn't it will not gain momentum from the train. No need for any theory.

@freshfreenlovinit Your understanding of the nature of light is lacking. Light does not "gain" momentum because if it did, its speed would increase. But the speed of light is ALWAYS the speed of light. It cannot get any faster. A ball being thrown while on a train receives the velocity of the train in addition to its speed. However, light will travel at the same speed regardless of where it is shining from. Light is not the variable; time is.

@lcabosa Frequency is not related to momentum of light, momentum = effective mass x velocity, special relativity state that speed of light in vacuum is the same in all inertial frames of reference and is independent of the motion of the source. Of course the effective mass of light will stay constant no reason for it to change. Therefore the momentum of light will always be the same.

Frequency is related to momentum of light. One of the results of Einstein's special relativity is to unite mass, energy and momentum. E^2 = m^2c^4 + p^2c^2. When m = 0 (light), then E = pc. The energy of of photon = hv. Therefore p = hv/c. v is the frequency, h is the Planck constant and p is the momentum. E is the total energy and m = mass.

But light has energy - mass and energy are equivalent according to Einstein.They are manifestations of the same phenomena. So strictly speaking we can talk about light as having momentum. It is completely consistent with the fabric of spacetime. General relativity points the way since the energy stress tensor describes how mass and energy curve spacetime. A curved space time implies momentum, which is a measureable quantiity.

Assuming excellent amthematics is enough providing the models we have predict the behaviour of the universe we observe. Physics is the science of quantifying the world we live in. What do you propose we have without the models? How else do we quantify the world we live in. Those models have been successful in advancement of technology. Science and technology are true tests of the models, I agree. But we need the thoery to be performed as well.

Potential energy and kinetic energy are forms of energy. Mass and energy are equiavalent. Two different things. The first describes how energy can be stored in different ways, while the other relates mass and energy to space and time.

Einstein's special theory is at the heart of quantum field theories. These theories describe mass an energy as force carriers. We should not think of mass and energy as being different. Remember though, they are abstract models that describe the world we live in, and abstractions are not always logical. Unless we can see the interactions that describe the relativistic fields we do not truly know what things 'look like'. The models are what we are left with, and they are good.

Black energy is the most powerful of radiation that in escence, in most cases, is a component of matter. These hypper frequencies, in their most intense values are capable of destroying the strongest of the weaves of energy (matter). If light and heat came from the sun, would it not be logical to assume that space would be lit up and extremely hot?

@jqs1943 No, because heat diminishes very quickly over the space of a vacumn, because there is very little to carry it. Light simply doesn't react very much to this because it has independent particles, and it's speed never changes. The only reason it may flicker is because it is interferred by air in the last milliseconds from the beginning of our atmosphere into our retinas.The little heat that makes it to earth is majority transferred by IR and UV rays, which are a components of light.

It does not exist as a physical entity but it's an etheral field very much like magnetism, electricity, x ray, gamma rays etc The photon theory is a misconception of what light is. If photons existed we would be able to capture them in a container and forever maintain the interior of the container lit up. A simple experiment with an active video recorder inside a closed box would record photons if they existed.

@jqs1943 I'm only 13 and don't completely understand most of the concepts behind advanced physics, I am simply stating what I think is wrong. If I've got my knowledge right, a photon is the virtual particle that is part of the wave-particle duality of light. Also, all objects reflect a certain degree of light, but they also absorb a large quantity. Because light travels so fast, it is absorbed and reflected so fast that we can not visibly trap it. The frequency reflected defines the colour.

@VineFynn I'm in complete dissagreement with the standard atomic theory as it was formulated as an abstract from an imaginary plane that has no association to a real foundation. The atom, by my theory, can be calculated and is a weave of energies (frequencies) that has the harmonics of light and heat plus more, that when excited by black energy (a hyper frequency) it responds by radiating its spectral field in the form of light. Day light is earth's atmosphere reacting to these hyper energies.

These two are energy fields of an ethereal nature; and particles are of a physical nature. The photon theory is wrong. The atomic theory is wrong.

@orderedntropy Well, the speed of light is not a variable if the medium it travels through is exactly the same--the speed of light is different when traveling through air than when traveling through water. Also, temperature and pressure affect this phenomena as well.

1. Just use Newtonian theory for your trampoline analogy. 2. Just like light rays (null geodesics) can be deflected by a gravitational field, so too can a material particle/object moving along its time-like geodesic. If its velocity is the orbital velocity, and its not perturbed, a stable orbit is formed.
