I've long thought the fastest way to Long Beach from the valley was via the river. Moves a heck of a lot faster. And isn't that irony? It's a freshwater river - yet it's illegal to access it.
The LA River could be seen as the heart of LA. It flows through our communities and to the ocean we all enjoy and love. Unfortunately, the LA River suffers from stormwater pollution. To learn how to protect the LA River and ocean from pollution, check out our videos or lastormwater.info
Love the humor -- and admire the struggle to focus attention on such an environmental disaster. What other city bans it citizens from accessing their own river?
Damn dude bold! I would never in my life do no shit like that. I drive past the L.A. River on the 10 fwy everyday when i'm at work and just the sight scares me. But I see birds, frogs and the graffiti art. How da hell do you get down there n e way?
The easiest place to access the river is near the Sepulveda Dam, but it is technicaly illegal to go in the river. I am working to make such access legal.
me too i like the LA river, if i ever visited LA id go here and bring my camera and film youtube videos of the grafitti. id drive my RC cars on the dry spots.
Am I the only one who noticed the guy isn't wearing a life jacket? What a joke! Kids, set a goal in life, and don't end up as stupid as this idiot !!!!
Agreed on the life jacket part (personal insults aside): As with all rivers, adults should use caution and don life jackets; kids should do the same and be under the supervision of a responsible adult.
was just out in the river the past weekend. amazed by the large number of foot-and-a-half-long carp swimming in packs of two dozen or so. also, saw rabbits, frogs, turtles, and of course lots of exotic birds. you don't have to jump in to appreciate what's there.
Nice vid and great idea! You GO GEORGE! My friends and I used to ride our bikes down in that river when we were kids. But when ya slid out on the moss, look out! YUCK! But it sure was fun. :)
Yes, have done my share of moss sliding, too. Glad to hear you have decent memories of the river, and that you managed to make the best of it! Keep that spirit, wherever you are now.
if you like biking along the river, you should ride in the LA Bike Coalition's river trek on June 8th(?). check it out online. we expect to be out on that day, too, but showing support via boating.
Gosh, I wish I was able to participate. It sounds like so much fun. Unfortunately I won't around down there at that time. Thanks so much for the info though and have a great time! My Love to The Los Angeles River! :)
Anyone remember the wonderful and beloved LA River Cats? Way back in the '70's? Cat faces painted on the water covers of the wash, running along side of the 5? You could see them better if you on the North side of the 5going back to Glendale. Those cats ruled!
The cats are still there (must have nine lives!) -- at least some. In fact, just took a picture of one them other day. Maybe not on that stretch you mention, but elsewhere.
as a kid in the 80's, we would see the "cats" on the 5fwy. those were the days.. now that it is glendale narrows from colorado to the 2, the river bed is gone, tree's are up and wild covering most of the view. sniff..
HAA! As a kid in 70's I remember seeing those cats from the 5 too. Looking out the back seat window of my dad's '65 VW Bug anxiously waiting for the "cats". Loved and still do love the river. : )
dad had a silver dodge tradesman 200 van in typical late 70's fashion. when ever we go into the valley from maywood, me and my brother would wait excited to see the "cats" in maywood we would go down into the bed at randolph st. and ride our bikes after school. what a time..
We lived in Glendale and would ride our bikes over to the Bette Davis Picnic Area (I don't think it was called that when we were kids, not sure) in the upstream end of the Glendale Narrows by Sonora and Victory Blvd. and ride down in the bed for hours either after school or on the weekends. I agree, what a time. People who didn't grow up around the River don't know or understand the appeal it had back when we were kids. Still does today. : )
Brother, you need to shake a leg down to the doctor's office and have him check you for scabbies, scurvy or the plauge! The LA river is not be touched, let alone kiak. My skin is crawling from watching this.
You'd be surprised at the creatures that live in the river, even in its current state of being. But long term, the scurvy factor is only true if the Army Corps of Engineers has its way in terms of advocating for lower water quality standards instead of improving the river's lot.
Seriously dude, the LA river is filthy. I don't know why anyone would like a BS "river" that is purely concrete and a thin stream with filthy LA runoff.
Don't give up on it yet -- there's movement with the approved LA River Master Plan to clean up its act and make it usable. It'll never be totally pristine and natural, but parts of it can get much, much better.
after a torrential rain, i figure a person could do the whole 52-mile river in about 4 hours (12-13 mph, which beats a lot of car traffic!). but for safety reasons, you wouldn't want to do it under those circumstances. most people wouldn't have to commute the whole distance though. but i'm sure that getting home must be hell; i don't know how he does it.
is this guy for real?! i think I've seen a story about him elsewhere, but i can't remember where. is this really the L.A. River -- who knew?! is that the Queen Mary at the end?

i prefer for it to be illegal less people... besides you probably wont get in that much trouble for doing that anyway

Then go for it. The river is open for business. Just be safe and respect the nature that has faught its way back.
