WE NEED TO STOP HORSE SLAUGHTER! I ended up crying through these vids knowing this minute a horse is being painfully killed somwhere and never got a chance to have a glorious life
What should we do about the people who are completely well intentioned but the economy and job loss and rising feed prices forces them to ask rescue groups to help their animals, but the horse rescue places are full. Hundreds of equines are being 'dumped' to fend for themselves on federal land across the US, as of feb '09
The method by which horses are slaughtered is cruel and inhumane and cannot be regulated to be humane.
Horse slaughter in the US was a death fraught with terror, pain, and suffering. Horses were shipped for more than 24 hours at a time in crowded double-decker cattle trucks without food, water, or rest. Pregnant mares, foals, injured horses, and even blind horses endured the journey. Once they arrived, their suffering intensified.
Undercover footage obtained by The Humane Society of the United States demonstrates that fully conscious horses are shackled and hoisted by the rear leg and have their throats slit. Because horses are skittish by nature, it is particularly difficult to align them correctly and ensure the captive bolt stun gun renders them unconscious.Unwanted horses should be humanely euthanized by a veterinarian when no other option exists rather than placed on a truck, cruelly transported, and then butchered
Horse slaughter subsidizes over breeding, theft, and the unlawful extermination of our wild mustangs.
Thank you for sharing your views=] I do agree with you on stopping over breeding. I just now realize that your comment is gone and I sadly don't know how or why so I hope you get this[=
Again, thanks for sharing your views on horse slaughter.
I don't claim that horse slaughter was good in the U.S. All I'm saying is it's worse in Mexico, where the horses are now going. Horses are shipped even farther in those bad conditions, or they just end up starving to death or worse. Slaughter doesn't cause overbreeding. Racing does, and people with studs or mares do. Rather than outlawing slaughter, we should have made it humane. Make sure it's done properly--kill the horses under vet supervision before shipment, if possible, for instance.
If you outlaw slaughter completely, then you're going to have a lot of starving horses on your hands. Euthanasia by a veterinarian is really very costly--many people can't afford it, even if they want to. Humane societies are full to the brim, and with the economy going down, it's going to get ugly. If we give people another option--a humane option, a humane slaughterhouse--then they will probably go for it. If done properly, slaughter would offer people and horses a humane way out.
In any case, thanks very much for putting forward a good argument and being respectful. I really do believe that slaughter was probably terrible, I do, but again...banning it is the wrong thing to do. By creating good solutions to the problems instead, it would allow a humane euthanasia option for people in a terrible position. If I had to choose between seeing my horses starve and sending them to slaughter...I don't know what I'd do. It would be a terrible decision to make.
Thanks for writing back to me and also being very respectful and kind [ = I can understand your views in a way. I'm not going to argue with you any more, cause I know we could talk about this issue all day.Sadly horse slaughter has a lot of cons and pros. I personally will always be against horse slaughter.
just so you know though horse slaughter is no longer leagal in the US, and as sad as it is to say there are definite negative effects from it being stopped. many horses are being abused, neglected and turned free where they have no idea how to care for themselves. Because there is no slaughter-unwanted, crippled, hungry horses have no where to go and no one to take them in. so sad as it is.horse slaughter is a necessary evil.would you rather see them suffer?
waaa this is so sad i am really crying
