Johhnyhib - first off, standard of living in Russia is much better then in Ukraine. CIA World Factbook place Russia's GDP per capita at $16,100 and Ukraine's at: $7,400. And the distribution of wealth is more uneven in Ukraine.

Under Putin, Russia's Standard of living quadrupled. That means that it doubled every four years. Got another administration that can post such records? And Russia's economy isn't as based on oil as pundits make it out to be.

There are plenty of good examples of democracy, so the 'Yeltsin was crap' argument is not an excuse for junking democracy.

The rising gas and oil price is what has made Russians richer, not Putin. Quality of life is still pretty poor considering those revenues.

oh come on, I lived a long time both in Russia and in the West and surely there's corruption and bad roads, but the image of a suppressed people is largely exaggerated. So is the West's admiration of these new democracies. I admit they get fairer elections but in case of Ukraine it all came down to the new political elite fighting over the country's industry and resources; their parlament's work is pretty much paralysed. As a Russki don't see much to be jealous of(

Well re Ukrainian politics it's all very disappointing, but I really don't like the KGB people running the Kremlin. Typical standard of living in Russia is no better than Ukraine.
