incredible player...and the aussie team was really really good back then...okay...thats not to say the current crp of players arent good but I havent seen such flair from the wallabies in recent times...
Never have I seen a winger with such ball skill. He had a good length kick as well, too much was made of his defence, without doubt no peer in the wing position.
as a proud irish man , many of my country men say that brian o' driscoll is the greatest individual talent in the history of rugby , but i have allways said he's no 2, for me DAVID CAMPESE is the greatest player i have ever seen, his demolition of the all blacks in the rwc 91 world cup, was the most awesome sight i have ever seen on a rugby pitch !
@TheSfadsa No... Yes... but he's not alltogether comparable. Different skill and stat set... Lomu 118Kg, Campo 77Kg, yet over 100 tests... Both are on the IRB RWC dream team on the wings though!
Was a great player but he should keep his mouth shut like yesterday when he talked to much how shit england are and they fucking thrashed Australia with great attacking rugby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Noone explains their reasoning for saying either are better or worse on here! I'm not here to impose on decisions. Jonah Lomu, probably one of the biggest presences to have ever appeared in rugby to this day. A 6'5 winger who's running 100m in sub 11 with his raw power is unforgettable. At the same time David Campese was a technical marvel... I mean lines he ran, ridiculous passes made, through balls and just analysis of the game... Both outstanding and imposing figures who changed the game.
the thing is he was inconsistent and sometimes when he pulled stuff off it was genius but other times he did complete howlers like costing the aussies the 1989 lions tour with some crazy pass on like his own 22 that led to a try
I remember when david Campese burst on to the scene. I was about 14 years old and he toured New Zealand and he had this remarkable 'goose step' or 'stutter step"
i'm french and I meat him ,he took me into his car for a game ,long story guys,I met my herro and that what counts. i was 19 ,and still got his autograph photos ,and a personal pic with him in his shop in Saint Ives....He is still one of the best wingers in the world, aka Rococoko,Kirwan ,Sella ,but for me still the nb one, come on 68 international tries, they are still chasing him......
u lucky guy, he was great back in the day. the defence teams put out these days is crazy, i think if you put campo in a game today he would be shut down, too much technique for the old style of rugby .
Cheers mate. Im English but I've got to say hes one of the greatest wingers of all time, he was a heroe when I played as a kid same position, fantastic player.

So its fucking like that then, is it? Try to show a bit fucking respect and its thrown back in yer face? I give up.
Hard to compare Campo to Lomu, and I'd select Lomu ahead of Campo but on balance, Campo rates as the greatest winger of all time. Tries. Caps, Entertainment, Skill, Speed... just not size I guess... Thanks for posting!
I'm proud he played in Italy

Great vision, great skills, great speed, great timing, and blinding footwork
need more wingers these days that are picked for these traits, genuine finishing ability, rather than their kicking and ability under the high ball

It was a different game then, and so much the better for it. Lets hope the game returns to those glory days... the rules need some tweeking.
