Yes. Steeltown was always a favourite. Shadow was not the surprise, but Girl with Grey Eyes. In fact, I always loved Steeltown. A great live track. Sometimes a landslide comes. Everyday that landslide comes for me: why are faces filled with anger that should only shine with youth? It feels like hell.
I was in my early teens when Big Country formed. To this day i still own all their records and cds, tucked under my bed in safe storage, and its been there ever since Stuart passed away. Now i can see why i loved this band and still do. Thanks for all the great music Stuart, will miss you forever.
im 20 and own all of their CD albums passed down to me from my dad when i was young and for me this is what real music is about, something you can listen to and instantly changes your mood unlike all the new rap crap. R.I.P Stuart
ma chanson favorite de big country ( avec lost patrol et porroh man) la guitare est magnifique !!!!!!!!! les paroles flippantes cette chanson est devenue une ombre dans mon ame et j aime m y réfugier so i will walk with giant men at peace among their feet and we will cross the wild frontier not ever to retreat...... rip stuart merci pour tout
Im now 40 have all there albums, I have 4 kids and they still find Big Country relevant. A great pity they and we wont get to see Stuy and the boys live here in Oz.
Found this band in the late 80's, a real dreary and lost patch of time for me. Had a Steeltown cassette and played it alot in my busted up car. Sort of melancholy but I believe its emotion did help. Wow
Yes, and the Buffalo Skinners album is also well worth getting, i think it was one of their best albums, nothing like anything else they did, it is such a great album I cannot understand why it isn't more well known
Check out that smile at 3:14, where would you see anything like that on stage these days in rock/pop music ? that pure enjoyment of just making great music..
Wow Grapefruit, that's a truly excellent story..........this is my fave Big Country song, listen to those trademark Big Country celtic guitars........brilliant melody and brilliant musicianship
One reason I loved this song was that it was so inspirational on a few occasions. In fact, once I even played it for myself to get courage to ask this girl out that I'd liked for a long time.
They were one of the first bands i ever saw live when i was a teenager back in the 80's. I got one of Mark Brzezicki's drumsticks after the gig and still have it along with all their albums on vinyl.
This song is so fucking sad, especially given how things ended for Stuart. He wasn't afraid to bare himself and wear his heart on his sleeve. Amazing song.
Just discovered I had this album in my vinyl collection the other day... Been listening to too many CD's and neglected gems on vinyl I had no idea were under my own roof. Was great to hear all them songs again... Big Country rules.

Just beautiful. There was just diversity in music in the 80s. You could listen to Big Country, Sade, Simply Red, REM, Talking Heads, Janet Jackson and De La Soul. Everyone had their own sound.
I think I am right in saying that is a long haired Phil Daniels of Qudrophenia who plays the cat lover in the video. Great song too. Wonderful stuff!! Never seen that before til today, so thanks for cheering me up, Utahwrx.
Thanks for that, I have been trying to remember who he was (Phil Daniels that is)since I saw this recently, he was also in Eastenders wasn't he? Great song too by the way.
Adamson, as all the BC material on YT bears out, was a giant of a talent and a Man. Compare to Bono, the prissing, preening counter of millions, and the Edge, the equally rich guitarist who counted Stuart as a major influence! It's not too late to give BC their due!
This is my favourite Big Country song, still love playing it full blast in the house and the car, totally uplifting and inspiring. The mid-80s were just great with music like this Simple Minds and U2 at their peaks.RIP Stu, gone but never forgotten, thanx for the memories.
Not my favorite ("Porrohman") but this one is definitely in the top 5. Thanks for sharing. Never knew they did a video for this, or any other song from Steeltown for that matter.
I saw them outplay U2 at Phoenix Park Dublin. They fired the audience with some fantastic music and an amazing performance that made it even easier for U2 but I left knowing they were far, far better musicians. RIP Stuart.
Personally, my favourite Big Country track. I was in a minority of one at school in the 80s who could see the genius of this band. They were the same generation as U2 and they should still be going as strong. Such a shame. "Just a shadow of the man you should be, like a garden in a forest that the world will never see, you have no thought of answers only questions to be filled and it feels like hell." Now at 36 and I've lived a little of life do I truly grasp what Adamson was getting at.

Yes, you can, and gladly. Although there is a comma missing between band and apart, so not that enlightened either. But there is hope. The Enlightenment began in Scotland, and, wuggynchris, as we say hereabouts.... yerafanny. comeahead.
Sorry, once again a reply to a sad rascist, (wuggynchris), finds itself here as a new message. Any ideas anyone, is it me? Am I just too stupid? Probably.
i'm just a BRAINLESS and an IDIOT TO MY OWNSELF , so , please , show me , where in the hell had i posted a words or a sentences , that's had shown me for to be a RACIST-ISM kind of a person ??? For i'm just a STUPID BLIND PERSON for see and to know ???
Don't over react when I wasn't even talking to you!! This comment obviously went to the wrong place, and if you had taken the time to look, you would've seen that I was actually talking to a mooron on the 2nd page!!
most of all , had made me to like about this band was for them good lyrical and a difference musical melodic than others musician had made. None musician had come close to it's , i thinks.
Subjective thing is music, but being from the UK and having to listen to the vomit music that the dullards of the country seem to like, its refreshing to see that folk from around the world apprecitate music , people who are technically adept at playing instruments, writing lyrics, playing live, etc
Only muscial snobbery prevents this great band from getting the recognition they so richly deserve. This track is fantastic and from a great album. The Flame of the West on Steeltown is one of their best tracks for me. Its a shame it wasnt a single. But the ones on the album that were singles are all great too. That instrumental at the end of this track is just sublime!
Stuart's lyrics could be opaque at times, but they always
made perfect sense to me. He seemed to let the listener fill in some of the blanks. And the music itself inspired you to do that. Stuart's guitar could speak volumes.
Amazing song... wish it could go on forever.... Long Live BIG COUNTRY!!!! Just thanks for posting the viedo.. I listen to it everyday at work and its also out now on DVD. Nice to see and read the comments of so many of you out there as fans of BIG COUNTRY.. TCUNC76
the look of joy on tony butler's face says a lot. this is one of the most uplifting bands ever and, as this song in particular proves, a band filled with nobility, which is not that usual in rock. cherished stuart adamson was a hero in more ways than one, and scotland must surely be proud of these four artists
UMMM...Uplifting? Are you listening to the music? Thought provoking, yeah, but they never get the girl and it's always sadness about the past. Don't get me wrong , I loved these guys, but in hindsight, Stuarts romantic idealism wasn't something he could live up to.
ideals are seldom attainable. he sang: "i'm not expecting to grow flowers in the desert, but i can live and breathe and see the sun in wintertime ... pull up your head off the floor, come up screaming." i was referring mainly to the anthemic quality of the music - powerful drums, strong bass, soaring guitars and passionate vocals -in songs like "heart and soul" and "all of us", for instance
Gotcha. Even as a teen the lyrics filtered thru & inrigued me, even more so now. Always internal and external strife, but set to music that made me feel I could take on the world, regardless. Guess listening again after so many years, I'm just feeling the pain, no optimism.
My words will never fully disclose the emotions that these guys pull out of me when they play. I really miss there music and the days of new wave 80's style of music. Big Country was really underrated
Ah so it WAS Phil Daniels on the roof - he was also in Parklife by Blur was he not. The guy in thre band whose name escapes me me, the one with the red haiur, I always think he sould have been in The Clash, haven't a clue why, ha!
grew up listening to my brother playing this endlessly, brings me back excellent tune pity brian adamson is no longer with us with all the comebacks at the moment could've been perfect for their return.
a big fan since in a big country aired on mtv.never got the chance to see them how sad all the great musicians die before there time thank god for youtube i get the chance to see the videos to the songs i love
I still have my Steeltown vinyl but nothing to play it with.I live in Canada and I know that it can't be bought locally.I think I'll look on ebay to buy the CD!!
yeah, that's phil daniels. the story part of the video was shot behind King's Cross station in London, directed by a brilliant guy called mike brady who also did a video for "east of eden" which is amazing.
I first saw Big Country in 1983 in a tiny club called Oasis in Osnabruck W Germany. I was a young 18 year old Soldier on his first posting and I was so blown away that I stole the poster advertising the Gig from the wall outside! Not a good start to y career as a Military Policeman..... loved them then love them now.
I'm 40 now and ive been a fan since I was 16. Every time I watch Stuart & Big Country I still get a tear in my eye. There has never been a singer to sing his lyrics that mutch emotion and mean it. It's still hard to believe that we'll never hear him live in Glasgow again.
Perhaps the best of all their songs AFAIK. I am happy to see how on Youtube you can find good stuff like this. The story of the videoclip is so 'old fashioned' with a somewhat happy (socialized) end, faced with the solitude of the protagonists at the beginnings. Very cool indeed
My favorite song from Big Country. I love many of them but this one always touched me differently. Must be Stuart's thoughtful and emotional lyrics and singing. I've been a fan since I first heard the Crossing. Wish I had seen them live when I had the chance. Unique.
Great song! I have GOT to start buying their albums. So far, all I have is a compilation with the chopped up version of "In a Big Country." Great band! Sadly underrated. I just wish Stuart was still with us. : (
I never expected to find video to this majestic song- many thanks. Big Country waved their wand many times and this is a fine example. Who the hell takes the time to write poetry about elder abuse?
i thought it was about finding a cat. just kidding. this is such an awesome band. I only heard this song a few months ago after loving them since the 80s. You might like some of the House of Love stuff. Very guitar-driven ballads.
It doesn't seem long since I was listening to this on my sony walkman in the 1980's on the high speed train train to Bristol and Bath University. There is simply nothing today thats comparible with this genious band
One of their best songs.

Stuart was the voice and the lead guitar player, but Bruce Watson wrote some of the best music! Thank you both!

Subjective thing is music, but being from the UK and having to listen to the vomit music that the dullards of the country seem to like, its refreshing to see that folk from around the world apprecitate music , people who are technically adept at playing instruments, writing lyrics, playing live, etc

Big Country= best band ever.

Brilliant song.

Incredible. Standing high above most of the rest of eighties music. they are up there with the Smiths, XTC, Echo & the Bunnymen

RIP Stuart Adamson. Thank you for the music.

the look of joy on tony butler's face says a lot. this is one of the most uplifting bands ever and, as this song in particular proves, a band filled with nobility, which is not that usual in rock. cherished stuart adamson was a hero in more ways than one, and scotland must surely be proud of these four artists

UMMM...Uplifting? Are you listening to the music? Thought provoking, yeah, but they never get the girl and it's always sadness about the past. Don't get me wrong , I loved these guys, but in hindsight, Stuarts romantic idealism wasn't something he could live up to.
karlovy123 4 years ago
ideals are seldom attainable. he sang: "i'm not expecting to grow flowers in the desert, but i can live and breathe and see the sun in wintertime ... pull up your head off the floor, come up screaming." i was referring mainly to the anthemic quality of the music - powerful drums, strong bass, soaring guitars and passionate vocals -in songs like "heart and soul" and "all of us", for instance
xensboy 4 years ago

The last 1:30 of this song has got to be one of the most powerful pieces of music I have ever heard. Just love it!!

Couldn't have said it better myself. If I ever had a personal anthem, it would be this song.

(from Quadraphenia/Parl Life/Eastenders)

yeah, that's phil daniels. the story part of the video was shot behind King's Cross station in London, directed by a brilliant guy called mike brady who also did a video for "east of eden" which is amazing.

I first saw Big Country in 1983 in a tiny club called Oasis in Osnabruck W Germany. I was a young 18 year old Soldier on his first posting and I was so blown away that I stole the poster advertising the Gig from the wall outside! Not a good start to y career as a Military Policeman..... loved them then love them now.
captainajm 4 years ago
I saw these guys in Redcar just after they released 'repubican party reptile'.
It was an intimate gig and Stu lept off stage onto some lowlife 'cos he spat at him and dragged him out side and continued playing.
What a guy.
Sadly missed.

I'm 40 now and ive been a fan since I was 16. Every time I watch Stuart & Big Country I still get a tear in my eye. There has never been a singer to sing his lyrics that mutch emotion and mean it. It's still hard to believe that we'll never hear him live in Glasgow again.
rickyw67 4 years ago
