@kramschoolkid [ɹ] is the International Phonetic Alphabet for the American R. I don't know why the group chose that symbol, but there are several other R-like sounds in other languages, and they all have a different symbol. Just like, why is [ʃ] the symbol of SH? Or [ð] and [θ] for TH? I'm sure they had reasons when making up the IPA!
Why is the 'r' upside down? What is the difference in the pronunciation of an 'r' the right way up?
