  • Why is the 'r' upside down? What is the difference in the pronunciation of an 'r' the right way up?

  • @kramschoolkid [ɹ] is the International Phonetic Alphabet for the American R. I don't know why the group chose that symbol, but there are several other R-like sounds in other languages, and they all have a different symbol. Just like, why is [ʃ] the symbol of SH? Or [ð] and [θ] for TH? I'm sure they had reasons when making up the IPA!
