I quit Karate a couple years back. I half regret it because I was out of shape at the time; I couldn't keep up with my classmates, especially during the 500 jumping jacks for my yellow belt promotion. I plan to attend the same school and start my training from step 1 now that I'm in better shape and have a stronger mind.
My 6yr old daughter has really enjoyed watching this and the other pinan forms. Its nice for her to see a female black belt role model showing moves, most of the other videos on youtube are all guys...
@cavanaug Thank you! That's around the age that I started martial arts too. I hope that your daughter enjoys learning martial arts and continues to grow in her training for a long time.
@RowHolland dont just take a martial art because you expect a belt. dont even worry about the belt. the belt only tells a person how far along you are in your training, learn the art for yourself, not the belt. if you school is good, they will understand this and also - dont expect to move up for months. and adult belts, for years. from white to black should take 6 years minimum
I actually help teach and lead classes at Family Martial Arts of Pacifica (my school, where this was filmed) when I'm home. Right now, since I'm focusing on school, I'm in my second year of university, I'm content with helping out when I'm around. Maybe in a few years I'll be able to teach more. =)
From Karina: It varies, depending on dedication and how hard you train, and the discretion of the instructor it can take five or more years of training at my studio. I started training at the age of six, but took two x three year breaks for school, receiving my black belt at seventeen. Although I began training at six years of age, I would say that it took me about four years of real (intense) training.
wow, a few friends of mine got on karate and were telling me about it, what kind of work do you do? (i work long labor work shifts right after i get out of school 5/7 days a week which is why im more concerned lol)
Karina's Dad: Hi. Karina just left to go back to school in Hong Kong. She's a full time college student right now. She isn't working for the time being, but received her real estate license and notary public license at the same time at the age of 18. That way, when she has a few months free she can help out in the family business :)
in my karate class every belt takes about 13 weeks and we take the test with the people in our rank if we are testing for a black belt he does it individualy and sends us a letter. im a purple belt and i skipped orange 3rd degree =P
every 13 weeks....yellow through orange I udnerstand...after that I think it should take a little bit longer though...and no disrespect but it should be according to a regimented time line but the skill level of the practitioner
it starts taking a couple weeks longer from purple-red then a couple more weeks for brown and my sensei said that for junior black it takes more than half a year.
I love martial arts! Karina did an excellent job on getting her black belt. I've heard of kajukenbo, a Hawaiian style? Sounds interesting. I studied Shotokan Karate and been taking it for 13 years now. I am a shodan and I still continue training with my sensei.
Thanks. I can't post url's in comments...but if you google Kajukenbo and wiki there's a wiki with all the info. Karina started under the late Senior Grandmaster Joe Halbuna, and during that time had the opportunity to meet Sijo Emperado, one of the 5 founders of this unified martial arts system. Her current sensei Lee Byrd is under Professor Tom Morris. Sorry for the long lineage but someone said I never covered it so there it is :)
Wow, I only hope to one day be that fluent and proficient. I study Kajukenbo in a small town in Oregon. I'm 16 years old and currently a blue belt. I've seen that our branch does not have as much of the original Kung Fu influence as some, though that is one beauty of Kajukenbo; it is forever evolving and changing. Awesome job on everything. It is easy to see that martial arts is not just a sport to her, it's a way of life. Keep it up, the potential I see is limitless. She is absolutely inspiring
tinfamily...i'm not familiar with this school or teacher (i'm a kajukenbo-wun hop kuen do practitioner) but can you clarify why the hand salute is used during the testing in front of the testing board then a bow is used when demonstrating self-defense techniques?
Karina: I've honestly never really thought about this before. I suppose it's a combination of what I've been taught, what comes naturally, and what feels appropriate.
I thought I recognized the red lapel. Good job on your black belt. I was the guy furthest to the left, next to Sensei Wayne. Say hello to Sensei Lee Bird for me.
anyone ever seen the show fight queston discovery channel? theyre doing a show on kajukenbo and my kajukenbo teacher and some other people from my dojo are going to be on it. it's gonna be on discovery channel on the 29th
Great video BTW This girl has heart and lots of skill, she will grow up to become very very skilled... The goddess of all female fighters... Great video...
You peoples' perception of this girl's ability as a street fighter is funny. A lot of the self defense demostrated here would be difficult to use against a larger opponent in a real street fight.
I would like to congratulate your daughter on achieving her black belt in kajukenbo. She has earn it. I hope she studies other styles of martial arts in the future. Way to go!
Thanks :) She has plans to study other styles. Right now it depends on the network of professors she is studying under, but we have had the privilege to visit one in Sacramento for additional staff kata.
I know you already pasted the test Karina,
But I still want to say congrats!
