We have just returned from spending two weeks here-we loved it. The restaurants were not doing too well though and when we went for a meal we were often the only ones in there.Everyone was really helpful and friendly. We loved the Sundowners bar and they make the best chips and humus.
If you go be sure to do an island tour and take in Oakridge .It is fascinating
Thank you for the video. I was in roatan back in 2003 and had a wonderful time there. I enjoyed drinking at the twisted toucan and meeting Daniela was definitely the highlight of going to Twisted Toucan. Is the bar still open? does she still run it? what a wonderful person and friendly with everyone.
I was in Roatan in May, 2007. I enjoyed myself but really had high expectations which I felt were unmet. If you are into diving and partying then I guess Roatan fits the bill. Otherwise, the West End is lousy: the road is dusty, narrow and the drivers are reckless. On the next visit I would like to see other parts of the island. If you don't dive I don't see the point of going. I don't think I would recommend it.
I would have liked to have heard some commentary. I was trying to see the place I stayed. I was there in '94 or '95. Now it looks so developed - so many bars and vehicles. As I recall, there wasn't much on the ocean side of the road. I think the development at the end and the road were under construction then. It looks so touristy - it makes me sad.
I'm the photographer of this video, and I'm happy to say that I'm off to there again, Jan. 12 to 26th. As a Scuba diver, I have to say that it is one of the most beautiful reefs on earth. The fact that there's a charming little hippie town like West End makes it even better!
I stayed in Roatan in 2001 Twisted Toucan was in there. looked like it was closed though. When was this video? We saw a his brains blown out at the Twisted Toucan on Thanksgiving Day 01, actually in the ocean across the dirt road coming out of hte Toucan. His family trashed the place a few weeks later when they tried to reopen..It did reopen later though.
Ultimately I enjoyed the trip and look forward to going back though anticlimactic. I went and dived several times but did not party until the wee hours of the morning. (By the way, I ate dinner at that Lighthouse Restaurant and therefore hearing about the big fire is really weird for me.) Anyhow, I didn't like how the main drag in the West End is all sand and the Honduran taxis drive on it dangerously. The West Bay beach is absolutely nothing to write home about. There's not much sand.
Sweet Video. I was there in Aug 2007. Sadly the Lighthouse Bar and Grill burned down one night we we're there. Biggest fire ever! Hopefully they'll rebiuld.

Yes, I heard about some kind of shooting at the Twisted Toucan or a similar outside bar. I guess the guy died.

It's there really briefly, but it's not as popular as it used to be. Everybody goes to Sundowner now.
