VOLPI voice was truly a phenomenon. He made difficult arias sound effortless. The most free sounding voice ever.He sang PURITANI, WILLIAM TELL, HUGONOTTI. and other operas in their original key never transposing even the most difficult operas. The voice was lyric, lyric spinto, Spinto and exteremly Heroic when needed. My father told me that no other voice RANG OUT like VOLPIS in the opera house .Enjoy
To me, Lauri Volpi has always been the all time best tenor, THE tenor per excellence, the one I would have dreamt to be. And when I studied opera singing, I learnt much more from his records than from any of my vocal coaches though worldwide famous some of them may have been.
Gracias. Thanks.
Hi David. I laughed when I read 'lyric' tenor, but of course, Lauri-Volpi's timbre is pure lyric, - it's only his pealing exultant top voice that makes us think 'heroic' tenor. His mezza voce is almost on a par with Gigli bar the tug at the heartstrings peculiar to Beniamino. (Back to the discussion we had about 'heart' in the singing voice! LV being of much cooler temperament) - Thanks for your message, David.
It was the beauty of a lyric tenor, certainly, that delicate caressing timbre. Sounded lyric on records. But from firsthand accounts (and they must be true), Lauri Volpi's voice in the house was a huge trumpetlike spinto voice, one of the largest and thrilling top registers of any tenor, Corelli's top didn't stand a chance against his! Lauri Volpi had a bright, ringing gigantic top.
I think the fact is that Lauri-Volpi was one of those wonderful voices which combined natural beauty with rigorous training, which afforded him the full range of fortissimo to pianissimo, enfatico to delicato... He could probably control every single note.
I absolutely agree. A conductor once described Lauri-Volpi's voice as; 'One of the great tenor voices to listen to from the opposite end of Westminster bridge!'
Eric Rees (baritone) went to see LV in concert at the Royal Albert hall in 1947. He said; 'I heard him deliver a high B at the end of Nessun Dorma, that made the Albert hall windows rattle! I've never heard the like!' - I heard Pavarotti at Wembley Arena, 1987. Even with electric amplification the voice was small!
Bellissimo documento!!!! Grazie
