@a23d23 I'm not Jeff, but I can try and help. It depends what you would like to use the knife for. If you plan on using the knife for hard work ( like camping tasks, hunting ect) I would say 40, because otherwise you will dull it down, or run the risk of chipping your edge out, because it is so thin. However, if you plan on using your knife for very light work ( do people actually use Kabars for light work?) you want a 30, because it will be razor sharp, but not hold an edge very long under use
how do u like this sharpener, next month i want to get a new knife sharpener and idk if i should get this or the kme knife sharpener, i like the kme cuz u dont have to hold the knife and it seems like with this sharpener when u move the blade it would change the angle very slightly cuz as u get closer to the tip the edge is closer to the pivot so the angle would be wider where at the base it would be more narrow, just wonderin what u think
Hey jeff, what would you say the best sharpening system is? Or your favorite anyway..This edgepro apex looks like it would perform pretty admirably but I'm curious as to what your personal opinion on it is. Thanks
another option for approx. $120 is the norton waterstone starter kit available on amazon. much less foolproof than the apex but equally or better results than any sharpening system around. more importantly, free hand sharpening is a wonderful skill to enjoy and is extremely therapeutic. a system like the apex gives good enough results, but lacks soul.
mostly by the type of knife...I eman any knife cna have any angle but generally speaking some knives will have a wider angle such as big heavy huntign knives and thick blades, where as kitchen cutlery will have a thinner edge, its also listed in the manual with the sharpmeker, a chart for which type of knives shoudl be sharpened at which angle...
Never buy a Millers Creek brand knife. They are the cheapest and most useless knives, I mean come on the bevels on the blades are not even. The handles are cheap bendable plastic, too.
Yes your talkign about recurve blades...it cna do that model but nothgin more curvy than that...like the emerson comander has too much recurve for the edgepro in ym opinion you can't really use a flat stone for that much of a recurved blade you know...
I believe in the results of old fashioned steel rods like I posted before to the ceramic rod video you posted. Watch this: Sharp Knife 1 - Heckler & Koch Drop Point X-15-T.N.
Just a cheap knife with a rehoned blade using a steel rod for about 5 bugs... Waiting for your comment :)
nice vid, yeah you cna take almost any cheap knife and out a little effort into it and make it sharp, the dsifference between a cheap knife and an expensive one most of the time is that the expensive knife will last longer with use and the blade will stay sharper longer...with qwuaoity your also getting more reliable locks and beter materials...but it looks like you did a good job sharpening that!
Well, the knife is not that cheap but a cheaper one. In cause of holding edge I like the S30V and M2 tool steel, even the 440C. With the liners or other locking mechanisms you are right. In this case I won´t stab anytime because the liner is just a 0.8mm steel sheet. For stabing I would use my extrema ratio fulcrum II - but I never stab anything at all! Anyway - I could do it with that N690 massiv back locking blade!
Yeah there is alwasy a balance steels like S30V, M2, D2, VG10, ZDP189...they all have great edge retention but at the cost of being hard to sharpen, it all depends on what the use is...its not always best to have a super steel for your knife, it depends what you do with your knife...
Yes it is...Mnay think its too expensive...Its about personal prefference everyone will always have different opinions about things no matetr what your talkign about...
No, I use a sharpmaker 9 out of 10 times, but I use this when I need to get a really nice edge on a knife, or if the edge is badly damaged this makes it easier to get it back to tip top shape...I touch up my knives often on a sharpmaker, so no need to break this out too often...
doesn't look like its recurve friendly...

I'm guessing you have to count the strokes, and unclamp the knife to flip it over? Or does the whole base turn over or something?

this or the spyderco sharpmaker

Hello,
Would a LANSKY system with 3 and 5 stones ave the same utility like a SPYDERCO sharpmaker ??
Also, I have seen a BENCHMADE EDGI-PRO which is very compact and quite cheap, about 20$...
Thank you !
