grew up in philly 1966 to '73. the jackson 5 were the shit! we got every single and album, watched the saturday cartoon and bought "soul" magazine just so we could keep up with everything they did. saw them on ed sullivan, stayed home to watch michael on the dating game. i'm SOOOOOOO glad i grew up then!
It bothers me to hear the johnny-come-lately fans of Michael put down his brothers as non-talented free loaders. They have more talent and a better work ethic than any artist you can name today with the possible exception of Beyonce. They paid their dues the hard way.
If Mick Jagger turned his back on the other Stones, no one would call them bums if they asked him for money.
They were classified as bubble gum by the media, but in reality they performed on the most sophisticated arrangements and songs produced by Motown. I remember when I was a kid how much my parents and their friends were just as much into The J5 as us kids were.
That was the genius of Berry Gordy and his magical creative and business team. he tricked the youngsters into believing this was "our music" . The old heads knew better.
Michael Jackson's a great, great artist on his own, but man when he's backed up by his brothers, it gives me chills! They just sound so awesome together!!!!! It just....seems right somehow, when they're all together like that. And, it's really cute...'cause they ARE his brothers, after all. *^_^* Absolutely love the J5!
Jermaine was the Original Lead singer of the Jacksons..and back during this time..held his own pretty good until Mike eclipsed him through Vocal dance, and stage charisma..and didnt help Gordy Pushed michael further out front ..even most of the Leads went to michael.Michael did out sing Jermaine however as far as Expression and style in his voice..Jermaine was very soulful but michael went beyond soul.a mixture of soul and pop. he was a prince in the making here and distined to be King.
@Jiltedin2007 you won't be disappointed. i have all the albums. i love the 3rd album, but m.v. was the album that moved them from boys to men. they were now a soul group to be reckoned with.
Wow! 70's rock, i'm seeing huge Afro's, platform shoes and hot pants and peace signs and tye-dye color dresses. Simply a wonderful reminder of my youthful past, we love dancing to the Jacksons 5. Truer messege in their songs, awesome, great, find that tree of wisdom....reach in. Missing you very much Mike!
I've loved this song since my days as a kid watching the J5 cartoons. It wasn't until the wee hours of Sunday morning that I checked out the lyrics...and they blew my mind. It's amazing that Michael sang with so much, as Berry Gordy would say, 'knowing.' Great backgound support from the brothers and from Jermaine, too. Great inspirational song.
It was written by the corporation. They were the hit making team put together by berry gordy to produce specifically for the J5 during their motown years.
When you have a moment, look it up on this site. Great song, and, it's extremely well-known among musicians because of James Jamerson's innovative bass line. Some have said it's his best work ever.
@zulukidd hey im gonna always lov them even now that we r grown lov the jackson 5 always especially this song grew up on them n now i adore their music more
Wow, memories! I remember when I first heard this back in '71 (J5, Third Album). One of the best songs they ever did; and the lyrics are still poignant, even 38 years later. Thanx for posting...
@TheQueeny100 Oh yes, those were the memories. Growing up in Los Angeles, back in the days of Wilt Chamberlain, I think about the Lakers and 1972 everytime I hear these songs from the "Third Album".
And remember: Motown didn't make the Jackson 5, THE JACKSON 5 MADE MOTOWN! Berry Gordy was an Absolute Genius in getting them!
This is the hit. The beginning is awesome..I love how it was mixed with some of the instrumentation on the left and the remaining on the right. Jermaine and Michael fighting for the lead vocal rights..they were all great. Listen to the lyrics..very inspiring.

Sorry if this sounds stupid lol, in the chorus, at 0:30, that's little Mike? And in the verses, like in 1:06 is Jermaine? Is that right? :)
