@mike71flores Mike, they are safer in comparison to the typical home nas, yes. Online storage like Docs, Amazon S3 and others, they are essentially multiple-redundant RAID, with the drives geographically dispersed. They are as secure as the password you assign them. I use local backup also, but it's a daily backup for work that I might screw up, which can be easily restored. Critical backups, the money files and such, imo they are best safeguarded in these online systems under strong password.
The expectation for this keeping your most valuable files safe from fire is unrealistic on all counts. If you want your files safe from disaster, you upload them to Google Documents or any of the other redundant storage online.
@lbruceolson And where do you think google stores their documents? They have just as much chance of being in a disaster. Although, at the time of this filming the cost was too expensive..Now it's way to easy. However do you really want your financial documents sitting out in the cloud?
do u have any idea how to run utorrent from the NAS box, (without computer) i have dlink dns 325 NAS box..(builtin bit torrent client not so handy)..Please help
Just because you have RAID 1 it doesn't mean you don't have to keep a separate back-up. Consider most common factor, file corruption! You should run a weekly sync onto a portable hard disk drive.
Plus, PEOPLE, do not collect any property if you're house is on FIRE!
If you have a tankless (or temperature adjustable) water heater, lowering the temperature control to medium could prevent you from experiencing frequent power flickering or outages. A water heater set too high can momentarily trip your circuit breakers without causing a total blackout.
Does the HD come with any other services? Like streaming to an Xbox, etc? Or is it only mass storage? Having a bittorrent server or a streaming server seems like the main reason to opt for an actual computer instead of just a basic NAS, so it'd be nice if Lacie included that type of thing.

I'm sorry, the WIFI got shafted on the battery backup, no loss :)

You only have two of the three items plugged into the battery side of the UPS, looks like the NAS got shafted.
