I just start to learn ASL recently, am hard of hearing. I can sign some simple words now. I joined a great deaf daing site, ----Deafornot dot c om----, and met some good deaf/HOH friends over there. They help me to learn ASL.
Oh for fuck sake. How is "hearin impared" an insult? you know what the fuck is an insult? is an insult for everybody that tries to find the right word for people that have handicaps to hear that THEY are insulted by it. What the fuck?! just take it how it is and live with it. I can't believe some people.
@Sherbeth91 actually... they prefer hard of hearing. saying impaired is implying that its an issue. if you actually took a deaf community/history class, you would understand the many issues. :3
@Sherbeth91 When I grew up a lot of people used the N-word. The cultural-ethnic group that it referred to said it was demeaning. I learned something. I won't use it or allow people to use it in my presence.
I've grown up using hearing impaired, on my 504 it says hearing impaired, my audiologist uses hearing impaired.
They just have learned that it's more them. One of my cousins got a cochlear, and didn't wan't anyone to call him deaf after that, this, hearing impaired.
Besides, most people who you don't want talking to you, tend to leave you alone when you use Hearing Impaired (i guess it sounds scary or something?)
@milanolano Why no hearing impaired? Personally, I'm not deaf, but I do have a hearing loss. And I see no difference in people calling me hearing impaired. I mean, if they want to call me that, fine. Also, I have a few deaf relatives (My older brother, my uncle, my cousins.) and they all would rather have someone say that they are Hearing Impaired, then hard of hearing.
@dftbasam I am a Sign Language/ Education for Deaf and Hard of Hearing major. I have had MANY discussion with professors regarding this and from what I can gather, "hearing impaired" bothers some Deaf people because they feel that it could imply that someone has a need to be "fixed". For example, an impaired bridge, needs to be repaired.
It has become very controversial in the Deaf community. Just wondering, why is it that your family members prefer hearing impaired over Hard of Hearing?
Ok let me say OMG stop arguing over something that maybe sensitive to some people. I myself was diagnosed a year ago that I am going deaf within a year my hearing is down to muffled sounds and that is it I have been learning sign language free online cause I cant afford a class myself. Plus I have been teaching my daughter and family. I have a condition where the hearing nevres are dying off and nothing can be done. Stop arguing and enjoy learning the language peacefully please :-)
A person who embraces ASL as their primary language will be considered a member of the Deaf community. I find many deaf friends on a Deaf dating site ----Deafornot dot c om---- Good luck to them!!!
What is so sad that there are schools and universities not making available sign language courses. Such institutions has dropped many of their foreign language courses and limiting to just spanish courses, also making a required course. But the spanish speaking are not handicap, but being deaf is a handicap.
just out of interest i've jsut started to learn sign language. i thought why not give it go. but what baffles me is why cant you just nod you'r head with yes and no or wave hello or goodbye without doing sign. is it really nessesaty for these kinda words?
Yes it really is. Think we have tons of ways just to say hi. Like wassup hello good day and so forth. So this is their language so the deaf community should have just amount of freedom and choice to say hello and other greetings. And they are huge on respect so think of that while your learning
i am really confused by all the different signs used for one word. I know there is more that one way but i can't tell if some are real and some are BSL or other forms of sign lang that isn't ASL
i personally came on here without knwing anyone deaf nd really wanted to learn this so i can help others...i understand you shouldnt xpect things for free but when im intending to volenteer my time FREE to help young hearing impared children i think having somewhere to learn how to do that free is fantastic as i dont have much money but i want to make a difference too. xx
@gotogta Dont be ignorant and closed minded. Im trying to tell you the correct thing. If you dont care about the Deaf and how they associate why the hell are you watching videos on their language?
You do care or you wouldn't reply. You do want to learn Sign Language or you find it interesting or you wouldn't be here, so you should be respectful to those who you will be talking with don't you think?
@milanolano Why would they say that for? My husband is hearing impaired and was taught sign language in school. I think the common misconception is that anyone that has hearing loss is deaf. Sad.
@Bunkie1996 why? i dont understand? what if theyre not completely deaf. my new niece is only fully deaf in one ear. would the correct terminology be "partially deaf" or "hearing impaired" ? whats insulting
@milanolano Those who are hearing impaired aren't necessary Deaf, but those who are Deaf ARE hearing impaired... so by saying "hearing impaired" it covers both groups. For example, I am hearing impaired, but I am NOT Deaf
@milanolano why?.. I have a friend who is deaf but she prefers hearing impaired. It's really all personal opinion, and it's totally fine is you don't like hearing impaired instead of deaf, but don't make it someone's only choice to say because there are other people who maybe don't like the word deaf.
Hi, I'm hard of hearing and ASL is my 3th language. The way to learn ASL faster is to attend deaf events and make friends or go to college that many deaf people attends to. I made friends in high school and talk to them in break time often, I learned ASL in a year, the high school gave me reward for learning too fast. Making friends and chatting with them is the best way to learn sign faster.
pople dont expect everything to be free, but i'm english and i want to learn ASL, I don't know anyone that knows British Sign Language never mind ASL, and region 1 dvds wont play in the UK. so yeah, i wouldn't mind lessons on youtube.
I suspect that there are not many comments, since it's basically an add for a video. Not what I was expecting from a video titled "The Basics of Sign Language"
I would really love to learn sign language.
But I don't have that much money.
Is there coming a sale someday???

@patsaxon Being deaf is not a handicap. They dont consider themselves as being handicapped, so neither should you. Thats a very mean thing to say.
