An immature pile of steaming horseshit. In how many more scenes is the misogynist Peckinpah going to get a pathetic cheap thrill by having a scene where a woman has her blouse ripped off her? Utter wank. Bet it's one of Tarentino's "classic faves".
Well, the Wild Bunch isn't under-rated, it's given the respect it deserves, but you're right about this film! It's a classic and it deservs to be treated as such.
Sorely underrated movie. I like how the namesake of the film is only seen in two photographs. Warren Oates is brilliant - too bad the studio took it out of Peckinpah's hands and chopped it up like The Wild Bunch. Peckinpah was a troubled, drug-addled genius.
warren oates was a true artist when it came to acting. sam was a true artist pertaining to directing. they don't make movies like this any more...they can not. there will never be another warren or sam. hollywood today just wants to make slick, commercial films that are generic...crap from the likes of the late don simpson, michael bay or jerry bruckheimer.
@wheelinthesky300 no, i really can't imagine the hollywood of today making a film like this or casting a middle-aged, greasy, apparently heavy-drinking,
hardly matinee idol-type like Warren Oates. you are correct. there will never be another warren. i hope the hollywood of today doesn't dare touch this film. they will just ruin it 's name. then, every time i mention this film i will have to say 'the original version.'
@johnrunion old geaser jack nicholson gets ten million dollars for movies that don't even have action, with old geazer nicholson even playing the love interest to some young starlet.
warren oates was in better shape in this movie than nicholson is now when he's making millions.
@johnrunion back in the 70s movies cost less than today's star salaries.
HOW DO YOU KNOW somehow cost about 110 million, with jack nicholson and owen wilson (!) each getting at least 10 million dollars! and this for a comedy. today, action movies like ALFREDO are the big thing, for the illiterate foreign market.
and nicholson had flops in the '70s: THE LAST DETAIL, THE FORTUNE; THE MISSOURI BREAKS for which nicholson was paid a million dollars, and even CHINATOWN, supposedly, lost $.
I love this and Straw Dogs. You can see from this film that a lot of directors was influenced by Sam's work, especially the stylized gun fights.

@ryko26 Sam Peckinpah was misunderstood IMHO. He opted to show the beast in all of us, the suppressed intrinsic nature of man with all its ugliness.

@FractalBolt Yeah. Trailers nowadays are way too shiny. Even their clothes and skin are shiny for some reason.

This film and the Wild Bunch are both way under-rated and under-appreciated in my opinion. Go see these films!

thats absolutely right! Forget that tarantino loser too, nothing but a cheap rip-off of classics like this flick
ioriorioriorio 2 years ago 3
@jhrunion Can you imagine a middle-aged, greasy, apparently heavy-drinking,
hardly matinee idol like Warren Oates getting supporting roles, let alone leads in film today?
And there were a lot of Warren Oates-types back in the 60s/70s.
Maybe Billy Bob Thornton fits the bill, but he's the lone holdout.
Come to think of it, if they ever do remake Alfredo Garcia,
please cast Billy Bob.
