@dwiseus Larry, I'm sure you do get chills. I do too. I'm a retired civilian, but I was associated with the military all my life, worked for the military and married to it as well. I'm divorced now, but that doesn't alter the high regard I have for my ex in any way. His service was a laudable contribution.
I just got my honorable. I totally agree. It is a privliage to be able to salute the colors. so many of our heros never come home. Thats what I like about the evening colors. The sorrow for the fallen just pours through the trumpet.
That's really a touching sentiment, and I'm glad you've shared it here. Thank you for watching and thank you for serving our country. I hope life in the civilian world is treating you well. If you were just discharged, I know that means big change. I hope all is going well, and that the transition has been good.
Yeah I have been out now for about 3 months. I have been sitting here watching footage of WWII wondering why I was so lucky. Honestly I don't like it when people thank me for the service. I personally feel that it is the least I could do for this country for which so many have died. I love what you have written under your avatar. The Ghettysburg address is the background on my desktop. Abraham Lincoln sure had a way for words.
the part where he says "that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion.. that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain" It really strikes home for me.
The Declaration of Independence is an amazing piece of art too. I also think that in reading it that one would stand up for rights. I am kind of upset at our government because it doesn't seem like we are too free anymore. I don't blame the government too much. we as a people screw it away on a daily basis. But who knows maybe one day we will all be free again and be able to handle those freedoms more responsibly.
sorry if I leave too many comments, just feel strongly about these topics
Please leave all the comments you want! I'm reading all of it. I had to go out for a bit but just got home to find these, or I would have replied sooner. I like what you had to say. I've often thought that more time in the classroom should be devoted to the open discussion of our founding documents, as well as the basis. I actually don't know what they do in K-12 now, though, so I shouldn't assume. It just seems to me that there is a limited amount of time for each subject (continued)
so even if teachers want to expand, there is no latitude because they must jump to the next subject because of time constraints. Within the context of history, though, we also have a tendency to treat events as a dry recitation of facts and dates, so I think many people tend to view the founding documents as well as important episodes in our nation's history (in all of history, actually) in too removed a way for real understanding to occur. Does that sound like part of the problem or no?
You know I am not sure. I went to some really good schools. but in a way you are right. We need to get the younger generations(like myself) more involved in what it took to get here. I have learned a lot about the founding document and date and things in history on my own just because I have a huge intrest in it. I didn't know much about Abraham lincoln until I was stationed on the Lincoln, and walked through the museum. Honestly I consider him a founding father for the things he did.
But I think most of the younger generations tend to watch movies and believe the Hollywood history. I never read the Declaration of independence until watching National treasure(lame I know) but maybe we need some of that sense of the unknown to give us that spark, and that longing for knowlage. I think the real problem is teachers getting burnt out from working every day and not really getting paid for it. I think if they liked thier jobs more then more information would get to the student.
I agree with everything you said except for the "lame" part. Ha ha. I've watched programs like that with great interest, and they can provide a useful spark. What you said about teachers sounds right to me. That's a whole conversation, and I want to be careful not to lay blame, but I think the problem is multifaceted. It's just a topic that is often on my mind.
I forgot to throw this in my last comment. I don't know how much of this would interest you, but if you use iTunes, there is a section called "iTunes U," with university course lectures and content free for the taking. There's no credit for going through the lectures, but the material is often very good. I mention it because of our discussion about history. Yale offers an introductory course on Greek history, for example. That immediately comes to mind, but there is much more.
you know honestly I have never owned an Ipod for long. I broke down and bought one and it was stolen. mostly I stick to CDS, used to have a lot of records too.
yeah you are right it is a whole other subject about teachers. my big thing is we need to find a way to do away with prisons and add more funding to schools. and my personal way of doing that has had me labeled as hitler, but I feel that after someone is in jail over 20 years, its not like they will get out and cure cancer
I've never owned an ipod, but you can do this on your computer. I'm retired and home most of the time, and cds are my preference too. iTunes is something you can do on your computuer, though, and many of these lectures are videos. Anyway ...
Well, Hitler had a different agenda, and you're not suggesting the same thing. As many as have made that comparison, though, are as many who might agree with you. I can't say that I have as severe an approach in mind, but it's another big problem.
yeah I just think we should be more strict with our punishment for mayjor crimes. people go there and live whole lives in jail and I think its bs personally. I think if there was capitol punishment to look forward to a lot of people would rethink thier actions, and it would probably single handedly turn the economy around.
That is really good to know I will have to look that up. thank you for letting me know all that.
I will watch the Vietnam Video you emailed me about. Vietnam breaks my heart because our soiliers and sailors got ordered there to fight and get killed only to come home and get spat on my angry people like they had a choice. I was in the USO when I first joined and I saw a Vietnam Veteran there, and I thank him for all the things he did, and the poor guy started crying. He said that he had waited so long to hear that. That he is proud of me and all the other young men who risk thier lives.
Im in the navy and i enjoy stopping for morning/evening colors and it pisses me off when i see people trying to go inside when they get the 5 minute warning call so they dont have to salute
I'm a retired Navy civ, and I can promise i've never done that. I enjoyed stopping too and thought it an honor. I've observed it too, though. They act like that's the reason for the warning, and it fries me.
Well, thank you for serving, and I wish I'd said "thank you" to the guy in the previous comment. I'm going to do that now. :)
I didn't know you'd left this comment about missing the Marine Corps. I'm so sorry, because I never ignore comments. Thanks for watching, and I'm sure the Marine Corps misses you too. :)
God bless and keep America, Frank. I hope you like the video. I wasn't sure whether it was exactly right for a video response, but you mentioned the military, and I know you served this country honorably. And I always did love Evening Colors. I would find reasons to be outdoors on Base around that time of day. ;-)
Peter, you warm my heart. Thank you, and please know that I have a great love for Canada, and for my friends here who are in Canada. Your National Anthem is so beautiful. I have often thought to use that in a video too.

Rob, thank you honey. That's a perfect way to celebrate, if you ask me. I'm thinking though, that if we hadn't declared independence from England, I would be there right now, eating pizza with you. HA! :)
That's right, Daryl. And we are as responsible to uphold the Constitution for subsequent generations, as were preceeding generations who held it for us. May we never lose it. :)
I'm fine Joy! I know what you are saying. I get wrapped up in one thing or another and I'm behind before I know it! I feel as though I'm constantly behind schedule! :)
Bless your heart, Moomay! I was up until about 9:30 AM, then I crashed until about 2:00PM. Sometimes in the summer, I tend to stick closer to a night schedule. I'm a vampire Moomay. :D
