The voice is great, the theatrics are great, but man, I hate this busines of not even STARTING to sing a line before the musicians are well into the next! I honestly couldn't believe how much of a delay there was particularly in the the first part up to "any other man" . It just wrecked it for me. What is the point in singing so far delayed that you are not even in the same key as the musicians? Come on, I mean a bit of a delay is fine, but that was ridiculous.
i have never ever listed to anything that is more amazing and beautiful than this performance! it is perfect and i CRY everytime i listen to it and i can not help myself to stop listening to it!
my respect, your voice and performance is amazing, awesome!!!!!!!!!!! you are the best! emotions are so true...
im stunned...speechless...this is even amazing than the original album/movie version..the fact that he is 35 or more years older since then...what a voice..what a talent..incomparable ..he owns this song..no offense to those who did a cover of this classic...
Ted there is no greater gift to the world than your gifts to the entire human race. I have adored you since childhood 35 years later your voice, this movie, theater show, music and this song continue to bring me to tears with smiles and hope.
if you love this song ,and want another fix,i highly recommend John Farnham's - Gethsemane version ,NOT the live version, but the one with david hirshfelder's [he wrote the music to "shine"] magic touch.its a bit wilder.but oh ,worth a listen. Uploaded by FreeTheRocks
Awesome. No one can replace Ted Neeley! The original movie cast was perfection. We all get older, and things change a bit, but there will never be anyone to replace Ted or Carl. Perfect doesn't happen twice.
THE BEST!!! Mr. Neeley, I saw you in San Diego, CA twice (once w/ Carl) and in Escondido, CA where I live. What can I say. That performance I just saw was just great....but what I liked was how the editor/camera showed other people reactions when you were belting your lungs out!
Can I just say please release some DVD or CD recordings! Or we are going to have to rely on our stuff...
@darthmorbuss i think is part of what is wrong with our world. Gorm is talking about a 3rd person thing not himself or about anyone here...he is expressing his strong opinion of this singer. Just because you dont agree with him, you dont have to take it and make it personal and insult his intelligence. Can you not argue about the subject at hand without resorting to insults like an 8 year old child?
He was terrible back in the seventies, too. I cannot watch the theatrical version of JCS with Ted. I make it past "Heaven on their minds", then skip to "Herod's song".
@GormSim you have a right to your opinion, but i agree with most, the old movie version is m favorite version. Of course people coming here to listen to this are already his fans. And it is more emotional than many other versions.
sin duda una de las mejores interpretaciones del Sr, Ted Neely a pesar del tiempo en que la interpreto por primera vez, aun en este video deja huella de su, humanidad, su emocion y la imprecionante forma de interpretar de este señor, muy bien excelente.
I think Ted Neely shows us the loneliness and despair Jesus faces at his inevitable fate. I don't believe it's supposed to be glamorous, this version has more humanity in it, although I do love Steve Balsamo as well.
Yeah... Steve Balsamo > Ted... This is kinda hard to watch, I feel like after this, he probably walked backstage and smoked a cigarette... There's like no time signature... the music plays in the back ground and he kinda William Shatner's it. He "sings" much higher than I can, for sure - but in comparison to Steve Balsamo who can sing this stuff, I feel like Steve sells it better.
Of every video I have seen, Teds vocals have always been better than this. Still, this is, without a doubt, the most powerful and moving performance of Gethsemane I have ever seen. Not often do a rendition of a song bring me to tears, but this...
absolutely stunning! sends shivers down my spine! i listened to balsamo's, gillan's and some other versions, but in my opinion ted neeley IS (although only in this musical) jesus christ. not one of the other actors/singers reach this emotionaly deepness than he does. btw. i'm an atheist. but this musical and this song in particular, is a milestone in modern music.
I had to wipe tears from my face before I could type this. I have heard technically better versions of this, true- but Neeley sings as if this was his own life experience. His heart is in this, and his whole soul. And for that, I thank you.
I don't understand how people judge his abilities from one (amazing, in my opinion) performance, where his voice supposedly was in a bad condition. I mean, have none you you ignorants who say he can't sing it any more or that he's tone deaf (what the heck?) heard his final performance!?
I am astonished! That slightly problem with his voice just makes it more authentic. It IS a man in despair, suffering from his fate! It IS a man who accepts it afterall. I believe every word he sings. I have always prefered Gillan but I can't find the appropriate words for this performance. At this age, he was able to perform the best Jesus I have ever seen. But it is not the character of Jesus who makes me tearing. It is Ted Neeley and his unbelievable voice.
Amazing! Of course, stupid people who only care about the technique will fail to understand why this performance is so great; those are the same people who think Malmsteem is a better guitar player than Gilmour because he can play faster.
damnnnnn......every time i watch this i can't help but cry... no one puts in this so much emotion like ted neeley does... n that legendary scream at 3.04...
He's not tone deaf. His voice has just given away from years of his style of singing. You can't scream sing like he does constantly for 30+ years without it having a negative impact on one's voice. Just listen to his earlier performances, and you can tell he can sing this song exquisitely.
This is the best version i´ve ever seen, because of the pain in the voice. He is more mature now compared to when he did the son in the movie frpm the 70s...
@thestainisgone485 Funny though... when he screams the line, "Allright, I'll die", and the voice cracks (for lack of the proper word), that always chokes me up. To me, that (and the other little things) made it more effective for me, as opposed to his performance in the film. Because I can feel the pain here, instead of the doctored film version.
@Reecem172 i also think that musically its bad but i can really feel the emotion because of the screaming and his falsetto is simply unique.. i nerver heard anyone sing better in falsetto (headvoice or whatever you want to call it).. to me its one of the best performences although hes kind of tone deaf veryx often xDD
@xxgenisxx yes totally agree i can feel his emotion and his falsetto is powerful but he is tone deaf and i think it not ruin but makes the song worse if u know what i mean
@Reecem172 consider his age. He's 63. At that age muscles involved in singing are starting to lose theri flexibility and singing like that requires reacting muscles. Thinkin about this, great performance, considered he puts more enphasis on his singin, knowing he cannot rely on his total vocal skill. I think he's a great singer and actor. What do you think? :)
@simobubba i understand the age condition and i agree that his acting during the performance is admirable i think for me it is the screaming that makes me cringe
And notice, people,in 2006 it was the 33rd anniversary of the movie JCS.An intriguing coincidence, and it made Ted Neeley even more convincing in this role. Bravo.
I was so fortunate to get to see this twice when it was in Madison, WI. I, too, was in tears with his performance. I also got to meet him after the show and he is the kindest person. Very soft spoken and always a smile. Will never forget it!
@ZipZapson I think if anything it's ardently neutral on the subject of christianity. I believe the intention was the tell the story and the emotions of the characters. They are some of the most interesting and flawed characters in history. The show and film end at the crucifixion. At Jesus's death. There is no resurrection in this particular telling of the story.
Here's the scoop...yes, Gillian has the more technically pure voice...but for this role, there is no comparison. Neeley clearly has the raw emotion, more powerful voice in this role...it isn't even close. I am a big Deep Purple fan and Gillian doesn't sing with the same power as Neeley.
Let us not forget, Neeley is in his 60's. The video was truly inspirational and Ted Neeley is truly one of the great Broadway actors and singers.
Ted Neeley has been Jesus longer than Jesus when he was alive.

@Robikus Pretty sure it's the other way around. I think agnosticism is a stepping stone people of faith take towards atheism.

@sisyphusmustbe Depends on how you define agnostic and atheist.
