  • 5.7LV8 = 200HP?

  • LOL at the shite Mike brings back for Edd, he must hate him!

  • American cars are rubbish? All American cars? That's rubbish. Remember, that car is a 1986 model, so that 200 hp from a 5.7 litre was typical for the time. Yes, American cars had emission controls on them 20 years before the British and Europeans discovered them. That sapped engine power. In the United States, Briitish cars were known for being stylish, but having poor reliablity, and horrible electrical systems. (Lucas!) Lucas is the reason the British drink warm beer in the dark!

  • Love this show but Mike really shows how stupid he is when he says "typically American rubbish electrics". Actually, American automotive electronics are the best in the world. In England, people are afraid to mention two names, Voldemort and Lucas.

  • american cars just like every car in the 70s and 80s were left with little power.

mustang 5.0 v8s in the fuel injected models had 220hp and with under $1000 of bolt ons and upgrades they could pull a 13 second quarter mile.

the crossfire system was a horrible design, a reason why it didnt last long before the LT1

  • Mike: "Alright Ed, all you gotta do is this that this that this that this that this that this that this that this that this that this that this that this that this that this that this that this that this that this that this that this that this that this that this that this that this that Ed: "Ok ok Boss, I'll get right on it, should only take me a few months of hard labor. What about the wheels, want me to spit shine em as well"? Mike: "Yeh, go on Ed, c ya later, I'll go get me some coffee"
  • swap a lovely LS engine in this baby.

  • Can someone please identify the tune at 7m 54s of this vid? It is driving me insane. (Pun Intended.)

  • Mike does as lot of work as farting comparing to Edd but he feels just so important that it seems he is about to s**t his f**k'n pants. Notice how he walks in to Edd's workshop when Edd is done half of the work and spent loads of time working and without closer look to a car says: "You haven't done anything yet." Is he out of his f**k'n retarded little mind? I would definitely beat the crap out of Mike the same minute if I were Edd :)

  • @Arkliobybis That's a running joke, I always love the part where he walks in and blames Edd for not having done any work yet, it's always hilarious

  • From 1984 to 1989: Power: 205 hp & 295 lb·ft to 382 hp & 562 lb·ft depending on the year/engine/model. But yes, a 5.7 L V8 only producing 200 hp is truly sad.

  • @wccrispy They were required to do that during the depression, remember?

  • 220 hp is because its from the pre-turbo era i guess ?

  • Having owned several German and Swedish cars from the 1980s and early 90s, and having friends who love old French/Italian/British cars, I'm not getting this whole American electrics thing. I had a BMW 535is once that had such crappy wiring that I'm certain the Germans had stolen it from the trash bins behind 1970s British Leyland.

A friend of mine currently owns an Alfa 164, a Merkur/Ford Sierra, and a Saab 900. Ask him about electrical gremlins. His 60s Cadillac limo isn't half as bad.

  • those wheels are cast aluminuim so they wont "polish up" well....I found out the hard way too...

  • Lots of discussion about this one. Who cares about the figures on paper. I bet it drives like nothing else and it looks fantastic, it really has aged very well. And the price! An amazing bargain.

  • American cars are rubbish? You mean like the 2009 Corvette ZR1 breaking the lap time record at the Nurburgring for a street legal production car and the 2009 Dodge Viper breaking the ZR1’s record a few months later? American cars can’t handle the bendy roads? Okay, keep on living in denial.

  • Notice they say “typical American electrics, they don’t work”. Yet the Brits rave about German engineering. Check out the failed electrics on there episode about the VW GTI Mk 1. I think I made my point, thank you.

  • Well, the truth is the reason the Brits bash on American cars is not form personal experience; it's mainly to make them feel better about them selves. People that feel less than others spend there time putting down others to make them selves feel better about them selves. It’s really pretty sad.

  • nice job with the sound deadening material spot on !

  • I think people get the wrong idea about the "performance" of this kind of car, it isn't, and wasn't intended to be, a 7000rpm euro fire breather for twisty roads, its about looking gorgeous, making a lovely noise, sitting back and cruising. Think of the difference between a hard tail low rider harley and a Yamaha R1.

  • Yep... American cars of the 80s (and, erm... 90s and on until recently) are largely junk. Having said that, Brits making fun of American cars is pretty ironic. Having owned a few British "classics" I speak from experience.

  • corvettes are around 300-375 horse power. for a base v8 engine thats quite amazing. 200? i wanna know who told him that. THATS rubbish

  • FXXK me though £2,100 is pretty damn good for this type of car

  • the lights not opening has nothing to do with americans. it has to do with the [revious owner not taking care of the car...

  • @wall263 , well, if you're going to look for the highest HP rated 208-160 HP (i can't find a 208 with 170 hp, but i did find a 308 GT4 with 170 HP), I'm gonna bring up the highest HP Corvette C4 which is rated at 405 HP. I don't want to get into a pissing match, It was a good car for it's day, for what Americans wanted. That's all I'm gonna say, American taste are different than European taste.

  • 1984 Corvette 5.7 L (350 cu in) L83 V8 205 hp (153 kW) 295 lb·ft (400 N·m)

    1980 's Ferrari 208 The 208 produced only 155 bhp (116 kW)

It doesn't look that bad compared to this Ferrari

  • @Pekabooicu the 208 was only a 2.0 V8 and produced 170bhp / this corvette is a 5.7 V8....so it does look bad!!

  • glazers are stingy jew cunts who recycle their own urine and bathe in it. israelis are liars.

  • actually its 240 some and over 300 torque

  • lots of ppl are saying the power it produces from 5.7 liter is shit but it is a 1980s car :/

  • why is it that the british hate americans so much every show i see is them just bashing on us wtf lol as far as i know we dont really talk about you that much

  • "pleased as an american pie" lol

  • mike drives as slow as my grandad.....HaHaHaHa.....

  • American cars aren't "rubbish." The Chevrolet line is over all lowest in US quality. That said, the more recent line of Vettes is far and away superior to the one in this episode and most Euro "super cars" at twice the price. My 6.0 V12 XJS doesn't come anywhere close to a Chrysler 5.3 Hemi V8 and the Chrysler has better switch gear, but I love my Jags and I like my MOPARs. However, if you have very limited knowledge of autos you are likely to make stupid statements such as yours.

  • is there anything Ed cant fix on a car???

  • Corvettes are such shitty cars.

  • it's hilarious watching these brits talking over this corvette and they don't know what the fuck they've got... hahaha night rider was a trans am you dipshit...

  • actually, "night rider" is "knight rider" so....

  • funny because typical american electrics...we americans say typical british electrics..anything from europe has the biggest CRAP electrics ever.

Personal use here. I love Brit cars but the electronics always suck...not some times but always.

  • honestly, a brit commenting on american electrics?? say what.

  • Americans lost it with building decent cars in the 80s, from then it has been a downward spiral producing shite. Now they are salivating at their glorious past, the 50s, 60s and 70s and yes its the past

  • This car has more than 330 ft lbs of torque from the factory. I have an 85 myself. My sons both have VW Corrados and each one has a GTI golf. All with VR6's and tricked out in every way they can afford. Either of them would never even consider going 1/4 mile with me for registrations. I think you far underestimate what a well engineered 230 HP car can put down thru the rear tires. And my car is a pig weight wise. When my foot goes down it goes like a raped ape. I hope we meet on the road!

  • @10Nazgul10 not to mention that that horsepower could easily be upped. people laugh at corvette, which is sad because its the only continous line of cars that has lasted more than 50 years.

  • looks shit you pair of fat puffs

  • American cars really are rubbish, 200 hp from 5700 cc is just appaling. The food blenders over here are more powerful

  • @philip0952 that was funny when clarkson said it four years ago and torque is what wins race and make a car fun to drive which is what muscle cars are all about

  • @i1bydfalt philip wouldn't know that 'cause he's a retard

  • @philip0952 you have to remember that was from the 80's when the world was going from carbs to fuel injection

  • @philip0952 that's from top gear

  • @philip0952 i know, its pathetic only 200hp from a 5700cc

  • @philip0952 uh much of that info on this show is inaccurate about this car...the 84 was only 205 but the hp went up every year...it was during a gas crisis and new emission standards that this car was made so....I own one and it handles corners at 1g and outperforms the c3 vetts that had close to 300hp in both handling and speed so....its the torque that matters anyway.

  • @philip0952 Oh boy, this car is 25 years old. Look up Ferraris of that era. They didn't exactly have high hp per liter.

  • @TheJoePepper Well actually a ferrari mondial quattrovalvole during that era was only 3 litres and had 240 hp.

  • @philip0952 Well that was back in the day, now they can get more out of that with the ls1

  • @philip0952

You may be right, the early C4 Crossfire Injection puts out too less hp. But the 5.7 Chevy doesn´t live off hp but torque, and regarding thi sit has plenty of.

I have a 88 C4 with the TPI Injection which gets around 250hp out of the 5.7. In combination with the torque it is quite sufficient for a 22 year old car. If you want more, there are plenty of cheap aftermarket parts for the Chevy Smallblock. Getting another 50 hp more is no big deal on this engine.

  • @philip0952 this car was built in the emissions era, most stock hp from 80's muscle is garbage, but easily fixed.

  • @philip0952 Bullshit! Before the emissions regulations of the 70s Americans were making a 360HP Z06, the 500Hp Shelby Cobra & 425 Hp Hemi. We sacrificed for the world and you Fagots keep crying!

  • Ha are you kidding me? The brits are trying to talk trash about other nation's cars, especially american. "yeah yeah american electronics, pure rubbish" you know corvettes are a decent size, but they aren't that big. Then again, these guys are from the UK, they're used to driving around little gay fag mobiles. These are the people that think the mini cooper is a pussy magnet... the english reviewing an american car is like a def person composing music, or a blind man painting. respect to lotus

  • well american cars scream 'in ur face'..but thats abt it, as for puutin them together, i think the americans need to read a book when puttin a car together

  • very simple fixes really in the grand sceme of things

  • he bitched about this car for 9 min and all they had to do is clean it if i could get that car for 2000 bucks i would shit a brick

  • Jesus..... soldering iron on heat shrink.....

thats a sure fire way to melt a wire.....

  • Not a good car, but charismatic and cool for sure - especially outside of America where they're much less commonplace.

  • If you drive one, you would fall in love. For their performance level, maintenance would be average, imho. Having a fair amount of torque and good handling at the same time is a fun =D. I don't own a Vette (yet) but I've driven a couple.

  • Oh I've driven a few. They are very torquey, sound great and grip very well. They also rattle, shake and don't really handle at all unless you consider tons and tons of grip to be the end-all of handling. That said I'd still love a C4, a friend has an evil black one I regularly lust over - even with an auto.

The C5 was a much better car, if not as attractive. The C6 is an honest to goodness great car.

  • True, the generations are worlds apart. But the c4 in the current decade is in the crazy low price window. Especially the "slow" '84s. A good starting point for a Vette noob like me.

  • true true.

do like my friend, buy a dirt cheap '85 and put on th later front and end caps - looks great.

  • Sounds good. I'm buying in the spring hopefully. Have to get rid of a pesky baja beetle and a motorcycle.

  • oooh, I'd love a baja bug - I live in San Diego and frequently visit nearby dunes with friends who have buggies and quads... I use my Subaru wagon.

  • I love Subees. We have a boring Legacy sedan but in the winter... well you would know. I'm in Michigan, and I'm sure my beetle would prefer your area.

  • They only mention American electronics are bad because they are and it's an American car they're having to deal with.

They're not saying that British electronics are better and theres not much point in them highlighting British ones aren't any better as they are not dealing with a British car.

  • i had to rewire a 73 triumph spitfire once....british electronics are as bad as american ones

  • Love this show but hated the american comments. As an owner of C5 I know the C4 was notorious for that fancy dash failing. That 80s dash represents a lot that GM and Ford was doing in the 80s. Putting out crap.

  • haha i think it's funny that talk down american electronics, when i can tell you from experience the brits lucas electric system on their sports cars is the WORST in all history. I wish my triumph had the electric system my american cars have.

  • This is a great little series but I'm slightly thrown by the "shoddy American electronics" that keep being mentioned. I drove several "British" vehicles when I lived there and the electrics were always the first to go! Haha!

  • Great series. but i´m thown by that too. especially since the 2 most reliable parts in uk cars were american. the rolls transmission, which was gm-sourced, and the famous "rover" v8, which was a buick engine. most people dont know.

  • @JazzyDave

Yeah you are so right, british electronics are really bad engineering. American cars also have some electrical problems here and there, but in most cases its an easy fix.

  • @JazzyDave the key word british! the only good british car is a jag and even then its a gas guzzler!

  • @lfclikewalfc What about the original mini??

  • It would be wonderful if Ed was given a Government position to encourage youngsterts to take an interest in engines!

After all Jamie Oliver was appointed to help encourage healthy eating.

  • drive a 73 mustang electrics are perfect in it... the "american" electric problems are actualli just General Motors at their finest. still love the vettes though, cross fire injection was a failure though

  • You know the stories of English Lucas electrics being bad are legend. The legend always seems to come from American automotive writers, describing clapped out cars they bought fifth hand. MEANWHILE, every fifth hand 1970's and 80's American car I've owned as a winter beater (Buick, Olds, Chevy, Mercury) all had exactly the garbage electrics like this Corvette does. LOL

  • that digital dash looks like a opel kadett and omega dashes hehe ( not compering just observating)

  • yes ferrari could get it from 3 liters, with higher octane fuel, a shit ac unit, and a full engine rebuild every 12 k or so . . . i own 2 ferrari both older, but the maintenance is ridiculous . . . if chevy charged what ferrari does they could build ytou a fuckin rocket . . oh they did . .it is called the new zr1 and it kills most euro stuff . . .italian cars = maintenance . . . i love german the best . . .but i love how euros create one big country . . you dont hear brits talking about their

  • Edd China is so fucking awesome:P

  • one of these hilarious things on these cars is the odometer is simply connected to the back of the guage cluster by a 2 wife clip . . just runs a little motor . . .so i had tons of buddies back in the day just put a switch in there and they could turn odometer on and off . . .as ed would say . . dodgy . . .

  • cross fire was made for just 1 year in this model . . it is crap . . . 2 injectors in a carb . . .fuel efficient . .but junk . . .the next year had the tuned port and hp went up 10% . . . high for the 80's . . .a ferrari 308 of this same year had just 201 hp . . .so that is a good frame of reference . . and this thing has grip first car to pull over 1 G laterally EVER !!!!!! so stop bashing the handling . . any brits want to bash the electrics . . one word for you . . lucas . . .enough said.

  • WTF - "Crappy American Electronics"??? Guess these guys never worked on a MG or a Jag??? ROTFLMAO.....I don't think the English...or the French for that matter....have ANY room to talk about automotive electronics.

BTW, they're drooling over a vette with 230hp - typical Euros...lol - my 1994 came stock with 330hp......and ALL the electronics work! ;)

  • you're a fag - stop bumming off your vette - Besides, they do have shit electrics

  • heh... drop a NEW vette engine in here. then your talking. 6.2 430HP V8

  • 6.2 displacement producing 430ps? And you think that's impressive? Hmm....

  • It is when it does it with 2 valves per cylinder, pushrods and no trick cam timing or turbos.

    Less to go wrong.

  • Except it was a GTV8...?

  • What? I was talking about the 6.2L Corvette Motor.

  • Then why on earth did you reply to my post about the mgb?

  • Hum, Youtube goof I guess.

    weird.

  • these days us in europe can get that from a fucking blender. 5.7l engine produces that. Ferrari can get that from a 3.0l!! fucking pathetic.

  • And I used to own an MGB, and the electronics were faultless. Turdler.

  • its a nightmare until you get it figured out..i should know i owned an 85

  • gonna have to overnight some parts from Detroit...

  • kjhvkvh

  • Fuck your attitude towards everything. Cock.

  • LOL! I was thinking the exact same thing watching this. it is an 84. 85 did'nt have the Crossfire.

  • jhjhb

  • Dodgy American Electrics? Did Mike forget about Lucas Electrics?

  • PRINCE OF DARKNESS!!!!!111one :P

  • Comment removed

  • @IIB20VTEC , te sun does shine, and it's not just England, it BRITAIN, meaning wales, Northern Ireland, Soctland and England. American motors do fail and are shoddily built, not a patch on jags/Aston martins and Rolls

  • lol..knight rider is a trans am not a vette

  • Does the sun ever shine in england? Or is it against the law or something, everyone is so white.

  • Well, I suppose Edd is white because he spends so much time indoors in the garage, under the bonnet of a car-LOL!

  • The USA gets a lot more sun than us, and the USA is closer to the equator... so what do you expect!?

  • This show is awesome!!!

  • Contrary to what the video said, an electrical engineer once said to me that the most reliable electrical connection is acheived mechanically. That is - bolted or crimped rather than solder. A technician I work with knows the problems that solder has when it is heated and cooled in cycles over many years, it simply fails.

  • Edd is the bestt!!!

  • The irony of mentioning dodgy American electrics...

    Lucas, British Leyland anyone?!

  • Shhhs! :p

  • My thoughts exactly!

  • Mike is damn annoying, but it's done on purpose, they should call this the Mr Edd show......

  • I think Mike is whats known in the trade as a bit of a lad - he monkeys about to focus the audiences attention on the genius that is Mr Edd China - what Edd doesn't know about engines could be written on a dust molecule - Edd is a top bloke

  • Edd can fix anything - even American crap!

  • He loves the crossfire injection, well sorry brit. They are BITCHES to fix.

  • He loves the cross fire injection, only one problem brit. They are Bitches to fix.

  • the roof and mirors should be blue also

  • wor, do u have repetitive crap type syndrome? this is on tv coz its great! moe of Ed i say

  • Hi there, just reading your comment marked as spam 6 times - i think viewers are angry that you've overlooked Mr Edd China's expertise - he is an undisputable genius - whilst Mike can sometimes come across as a bit of a ignorant i think this is deliberate simply to emphasize just how clever Edd really is - a bit like a comedy duo with a straight guy and the funny one - why dont you give the lads another chance - a new series is coming up soon - enjoy

  • now that i know that this on discovery i will try to watch it. love cars all kinds, American, European, Japanese. just love em

  • no one in their right mind likes american cars other than the die hard patriots

  • I woulder if they actually find out that it doesnt need head liner? Cause that Corvette has a Pop Top. lol

  • there's only on person talking shit!

  • Mike is a typical ar salesman. Is overenthusiatic about talking shit.

  • Should have used a heat gun or hairdryer to shrink the heat shrink - it would look much neater.

  • how are the electronics typically American. That said, its twenty some years old, i don't care what your driving, i'm sure your going to have issues in whatever, i do with my yota.

  • Yeah, that was kinda silly. My brother's 20 year old Audi has a lot more problems than that 'vette does.

  • nonononononono u stupid morons, that isint flat paint thats a targa see through top its not flat its simply dirty!

  • "As quick as you can cause the suns comming out"...LOL Mike is such a tosser!

  • I like how Mikes amazed by the horsepower. Guess its so much more than most the same price Euroboxes. Imagine if he saw a Z06. Hed have a heart attack lol

  • LOL!!!!

  • It has about 250bhp

  • 206bhp but close

  • damn thanks so much for putting this up i got th3 sam3 car and imma do that with my roof i woulda n3v3r thought of it but y3ah thanks

  • right light looks slower still a wicked car

  • sexy car.

  • ^ Car was a beast in it's day. Still can whoop some ass, They should of got a later C4 with an LT1

  • LOL, its a beast. These guys must not see over 200hp cars. Funny. Still a great car none the less.

  • silly yank :-)
