They don't need the government to expropriate those funds from them, so as to invest in those things the government has decided, at its whim, are currently good things. Sure, the NBN 'would be good'. So would many things. The fact remains that any funds spent on the NBN are taken from people, which they would otherwise spend on their own things - which may include fiber.
