I AGREE! I think it's interesting that so often old animation gets comments about how the animators must have been on drugs. This shows the lack of imagination you're talking about.
i know huh! there are these dochebags that read thse books etc. that think that disney created mickey when in reality ub did and disney mearly marketed him. he needs a statue of him next to disney in disneyland!
The old cartoons did a lot of things because they weren't bound by political correctness. There was more artistic freedom, and that is why they are still enjoyed. :)
Actually, this was one of the first Ub had to submit to the Hays office. Since the Hays Office was created in part to combat Betty Boop it really hurt the Fleischers...
Not really. The Hayes Code was much stricter than you might think. Screenwriters had to create their own "shorthand" to portray Gay characters who could pass by the literal-minded censors. Vito Russo wrote about that in his book, The Celluloid Closet.
This cartoon has much in common with Popeye cartoons, including "Popeye Meets Sindbad the Sailor" and "Popeye and the Forty Theives", from a few years later; I suspect that Fleisher might have hired some people away from Iwerks.
the fleischer brothers were goin out of style by this time so iwerks actually hired some animators from them, thats why the girls walk kinda like betty boop and they boys kidna look like popeye...its al in the style i guess
3:58-4:15 reminds me of Disney's Aladdin.... At least they borrowed scenes from something good!

Well if that's the case it's funny that the Hays office would have let something like the gay pirate slip by.
cha5 3 years ago
You could usually get innuendo (like this) to slip by, but if the censors knew what you were doing they stomped you flat.

A bald short sailor that smokes a corncob pipe. Guess who that sounds like. What was that homosexual character all about? Rather daring for the era
