Really, who plays like this anymore? Simply nobody. I have studied this instrument all my life and have never heard anybody with a lighter, more elegant tone, and a finer sense of timing and overall timing. It is so inspiring to hear him play. He defies any rules, and pedantic approach.
@ctsit I totally agree. he belongs to the true Romantic tradition of the 19th century, like Artur Rubinstein (another of my favorite pianists) This means he plays the waltzes with superb passion but also grace. He does not overuse tempo rubato as so many pianists do these days. A tragedy he died so young.
I adore Dinu Lipatti very much and I consider him as one of the best pianists that ever lived.
I still have to critizise the Fontana's versions Lipatti used in stead of Chopin's's! And I'm so used to Artur Rubinstein (whom I prefer) ... :D However I agree that Lipatti had his own style and an angellike way to play! So thankfull that I got in touch with his playing by a gift of my cousin!
@99hoolio Yes, altho I do appreciate Lipatti very much and because he is a Romanian as I am, I think Lang Lang's version is played much more liltingly, as a waltz should be played....Dinu plays it too fast.
I love Rubenstein, Horowitz & Cortot but for me Lipatti's recording of Chopin valses stands alone as something of almost perfection. It inspired as classical student to learn them.
Lipatti's playing radiates a sheen of consummate professionalism which really gives this piece a big boost. I've been a big Lipatti fan ever since his release of this recording. Before that, I didn't understand any of his work. Too artsy, too intellectual with an unbalanced emphasis on technical virtuosity at the expense of immediate emotional expressivity and honesty. Here, the brilliant playing of Lipatti comes into his own through his complete mastery of style, technique & emotional maturity
what differentiates Dinu Lipatti from the others in rendering Chopin's masterpieces is the actual flow of the pieces...everything seems so continuous that at the end of the play the listener actually gets the overall impression, not the segmented impression... correct me if I'm wrong but I think this is one of the greatest rendintions available for modern ears of Chopin's grande valse brilliante
One of the greatest tragedies of 20th century music was the death of Dinu Lipatti at the age of 33. Had he lived a full lifespan he would have been the century's single greatest pianist. He and his fellow Romanian Clara Haskil were Cortot's best students. Both of them musicians par excellence...each different, but with that impeccable technique and poetry of the very highest order. Time may dull the recorded sound a little, but Lipatti's Waltzes will never be surpassed.
Dinu Lipatti's version of the Chopin's Concerto in E minor is impeccable and immaculate. His clarity is unmatched. His rendition of this work is a model for all others.
I remember quite well my first experience with Dinu Lipatti's playing - Chopin waltzes. I was afraid that he would not justify lots of superlatives I'd read about him and that he would not stand up to Rubinstein's waltzes renditions I had been used to. And how wrong I was! Lipatti's Chopin just blew me away, together with Rubinstein whose waltzes seem a bit boring in comparison. Lipatti has power but is not vulgar, he has control of the melody but is not dull as many others in these pieces are.
Brilliant.Dinu Lipatti was a romanian clasical pianist. He is one of the finest pianists of the 20th century. He was composer Too, who wrote in a neoclassical style with romanian influenses. Thanks awfully for posting.
Trying to dance Chopin valses proves them undanceable, as usually said. Excepted when you stumble on Dinu Lipatti: while even faster than others, much faster, they pull you out of your chair and throw you on the dance floor. Full at the same time of energy and sensibility, expression and soberness, personality and accurateness. Makes the best contemporaries sound mannered; none approaches him.
« This is much more than a best rendering ever of a Chopin Valse ; this is also the modern pianist ethics and esthetics manifesto. A slap on the face of all his contemporaries and an (impossible) challenge for the future generations. He will be forgiven for playing this in an apparently reckless and well-behaved manner. We need read behind the frontage and kneel down. »

Isn't it exquisite? What an unparalleled tragedy that he died at such a young age.
Just listen to those repeated notes !
I love the way he has a complete grasp of the total picture and such perfect technique that the music flows as naturally as nature itself.
He is the greatest example of an intermediary.

Lipatti's proboscis is simply a Roman or a Romanian nose, and I think he is quite handsome as well as a brilliant pianist!

Someone said Chopin liked this composition the best of his works. Does anyone know? He (Chopin) would have appreciated its rendition by Dinu Lipatti
bsschmitz 2 years ago 7
@bsschmitz My memory may be faulty, but I believe that Chopin's favorite among his waltzes was the one in A minor Op. 34, no. 2.
Lipatti's version, a beautiful one of course, is here on YouTube.

I particularly like the way he captured the "chattering" quality of this waltz ... you can really hear the Society ladies gossiping to each other.
