he is a fantastic songwriter and has a great voice.  But he does not have the guitar skills to be in the league of SRV, Doyle Bramhall II or Joe Bonamassa. I do respect his talent though. He really has his own thing going for him. I'm not really sure he sounds right as a blues guy though. He seems to really want that identity, but it doesnt seem to fit him right.

@guitarthroat The guy shreds. I love SRV, Hendrix and the greats... but Mayer does really have the chops right up there with the best of them. If you can't admit it, you've either a) not seen/heard extensive live recordings of his playing, b) have some sort of nostalgic fog around your head that keeps you from admitting anybody born after 1970 could be an amazing musician or c) you just envy him and can't confess that a protege could reach the caliber of your idols.

I don't get into the whole argument of how because he is famous and I'm not that I have no right to have an opinion. Popular doesn't mean superior in skills. I have noting against John Mayer. @guitarthroat Mayer got BORED at Berklee! Sure, he uses a LOT of people's licks, but everyone copies everyone. look at Joe Bonamassa. He copies Hendrix and Clapton SOOO much that it's almostlike he's playing out of a book. i'm not bashing bonamassa... I got the opportunity to interview Mayer a year ago and he said "The pop music is just for paying bills and the blues we do is primarily for fun. The fans just happen to love it as much as we love playing it."

@davidbacamusic yes they made them in 2009. Fender made 83 identical ones which are shit loads of money (one sold on eBay a while ago for about £12,000) . But fender made some black ones which were not relic'd for a limited time, these are cheaper and easier to find. Some companies make replicas of the black one but you will have to find one. Hope this helps ;)

Kind of bummed that he originally was going to put out the relic'd version of this guitar only to come out with the standard black paint job completely un-relic'd (is that a word? no..no it isnt). If you go to his Tumblr page, he posted a picture of the bodys of the black one on what looks like an assembly line and they were all relics!! Beat to shiiite just like his. Where did those go? There are 83 'Relic' versions worldwide, as he said in the video.

You can get your hands on one for around £20,000

There is also an 'un-relic'd' version as you put it, for a more affordable price, AS WAS SAID IN THE VIDEO!

"Victoria" is also on that album, and as far as I'm concerned, that's the most beautiful acoustic song John has ever written. Anyways, it is a great album to pick up, if you can find it somewhere (I had to use piratebay, sorry John).

@peaces100 I have to call BS on this one. I have never in my life heard of a guitar with a mahogany fingerboard. The only Fender fingerboards I've ever seen are maple, rosewood, and the odd Ebony on a limited edition. I think mahogany isn't used as much because it's too soft for fingerboards.

That fingerboard looks a lot like a dark piece of rosewood to me. I read somewhere that besides the obvious bits John based his guitars after SRV's signature Fenders, which have a rosewood fingerboard

@rockboy8812 There is a truss rod BUT its inside the neck and can only be ajusted if the neck is taken off. The ajustment peice is on the part of the neck that attaches to the body of the guitar.

I wouldn't say that, just because it wasn't as big as Continuum doesn't mean it was bad. It's a great album.

I didn't call it bad, I called it disappointing. I felt like he was really making his own voice with continuum, and the where the light is live stuff. This album just seemed very vanilla and unoriginal, no standout tracks. the guitar in heartbreak warfare sounds an awful lot like u2's bad, and in my opinion johns got more creativity in his left pinky than the edge.

Plus in the RS interview he even said continuum is a better album.

Yeah I find it funny that he actually said Continuum is better than Battle Studies, most artists would plug their latest album, but john mayer is something else. Agree with the whole Bad thing by U2, disagree with him having more creativity than the Edge, that's a matter of opinion and you can't compare them, they're two totally different songwriter/musicians. I liked Battle Studies, but Continuum was better and it DID take the world by storm, I'll give you that. Maybe he'll never top it.

Word...I did say it was my opinion tho, not fact. Just after seeing It might get loud I lost a lot of respect for the Edge. His whole sound revolves around effects units. Give John any guitar and a microphone and he can put on an entertaining show.

True, Edge's sound does revolve around effects, but in doing that he's gotten sounds on guitar no one has gotten before, and with those sounds U2 has written some great songs. When it comes down to technique and skill with just a guitar though, John Mayer is better. People thought the blues was dead? I say watch Where The Light Is.

I just saw the prototype for the producion line version and it looks exactly like an american standard with gold hardware. That´s very off putting, I was expecting the production line to have the relic look as well but without as much detail.

I have a custom shop classic strat which has a similair neck to a deluxe and its a tad smaller then what I imagine that 'the black one' to be. Its likely just your standard rounded sixties neck.I agree with others on here.You could buy an awesome john cruz guitar for alot less, still alot but just as good.Does a replica of a John Mayer guitar have kudos enough to justify that price tag?I can understand Blackie or SRV but 12 grand for a this?I bet most of them get bought by his friends.
