Ok, on a positive tack I'm gonna post my personal top 10 for the last month..in no particular order Angel Blood and Trenches #2 Captain Britain #12 Wolverine Noir #1 Warlord #1 Glamourpuss #6 Jersey Gods #3 Judge Dredd (in 2000AD) Conan #9 Invincible #60 Madame Xanadu #9 Its tough to whittle down to 10, theres a lot of good comics out there if people take the time to find them. iron man, ghost rider, action comics, Rebels, Dynamo 5, Godland, gotta mention Volume 7 of Requiem in Heavy metal
As far as opinions go on what is good or not, the fact of habit and ocd(sequential comic book #s) tend to trump any review. If someone has been buying spider-man their whole life, and nothing else, they'll keep buying it even if it's horrible. Because they either love spider-man to death or they don't want to skip an issue. It's harder for a fan, but lighter on the wallet(or purse), to just buy what is truly appealing in one's eyes, instead of what most agree to be good.
eliot made a point about x titles dominating the top 10 sales spots for years why have they dropped out? i havent liked the xmen in long looong time to me they are just a bad repetitive soap opera so i couldnt say why they were so popular or why they arent now but im very curious about why the mighty x franchise has fallen
maybe your just rich and buy like 50 comics a week to trash through.
when i buy a comic its cause i like it enough to look after.
lol..i dunno, i try to like it... and i have tried...but at the end of the day i had to be real with myself and was just like....this is just shit..no matter how much i want this to be better.
i even tried editing them ..but it was just a waste of time as there werent enough good bits.
new avengers is one of the best selling books out there because it is one of the best on the market, if you guys are in the minority now maybe its coz your taste is bad, not everyone elses. i gotta say i like your show and watch it every time but you guys do like some crap books. cap america 70th was the most boring thing ive ever read in 30 seconds.
"new avengers is one of the best selling books out there because it is one of the best on the market, if you guys are in the minority now maybe its coz your taste is bad, not everyone elses."-1IronFist
Now that right there is some flawless logic. I can't possibly argue against that statement. Because there is no fucking way that the masses/sheep could be wrong and the minority/those who know better could be right. Ya, that's never happened.
what makes you thing you know better? its not like music or records sales, most people who buy music do so because a radio station plays the same tune over and over and drill it into peoples heads. most comic book fans i know buy the titles by the writers they enjoy. same as any form or reading, you have to buy the thing before you know if its good or not. and if people keep buying the same titles by the same writers..... they must be doing something right.
So magazines like Wizard and websites like Newsarama are nothing like radio stations? Constantly telling you what's good, what's not and what you should buy. Helping Marvel/DC fuel the hype machine to make the masses rabid for the next level of mediocrity. That could never happen in this industry.
You know how I know if a book sucks before I buy it? If the names Bendis, Loeb or Millar are anywhere on the cover. Easy enough.
thats cause they are show presenters, not fanboys.
the stack had 3 presenters, but only 1 of them was a fanboy (pete). - and he was usually on the money.
then you have the la di da writers (soz Elliot ) who are all engrossed in the proffessionalism of the indusrty, rather than having a physics debate about how a smack-down would take place.
when bendis started writing ultimate spider-man, the original plan was for him to write ultimate x-men too. he declined, feeling he wouldn't be playing to his strengths by writing a team book - a lot has changed!
what annoys me is that avengers could so easily *be* a solid book, with bendis on it, imho - if only he'd stop with the repetitive, decompressed style he uses and gave more thought to his plots beyond the high concept.
but the WHOLE top 5? OML is so much fun! thanks for the shoutout
defenitely agree, bendis is a great plot designer, but the composition of the writing and art; in his books (and a few other people) remind me of bad tv storyboards.
Bendis is a brilliant writer on things like Powers which thankfully is coming back this summer. Unfortunately he's not that great at straight superhero team books.
Yeah, I've noticed that too with other reviewers, it's a giant lovefest for the most part and they spend their time talking about what might happen next. Predictions are nice but not enough. I think maybe they are worried that they won't get viewership if they are seen as being negative about anything.
Speaking as a comic book store employee, I can tell you the vast majority of comics buyers simply want to know what happens next to their favorite characters. Very few purchase based on writing and/or art quality. I'm sure you already know this, but it bares repeating.
Or most are not looking for high art but merely mindless entertainment and escapism which there is nothing wrong with. There are different breeds of comics fans.
I like mindless entertainment now and then but I'll be damned if I pay good money for books with poor writing and or art.
Buying a book because "I want to follow the character" despite the books being poor is just rewarding a company for serving you up shoddy produce. That is the definition of stupidity in my opinion.
People shouldn't settle for taking crap but they do and its their own fault.
very good point ben i know for me im a cap guy i have every issue and most his TOS issues it didnt matter how good or bad the run was at the time i wanted read about my fav captain america
collecting is part of comics as well it not just like reading your favorite genre of books or tv shows
Hey, guys. Speaking of New Avengers, I got a chance yesterday to read through the Free NA issue for "Free Comic Book Day" and it was actally kinda good. Which surprised the Hell outta me because Bendis wrote it.
Jose, did you happen to see it and if so, what were your thoughts about it.
I completely buy New Avengers out of habit, when it gets good stats I feel so dirty. The problem is I foolishly think something is actually going to happen in the next issue. Im annoyed with Dark Reign event because I think people feel that if they are not buying a bendis book then they are missing the overall MU story, but because everything has got so expensive people are dropping the small good books, and now loads of great titles are in danger.
Sorry to say but if battle for the cowl is in number 3... DC's readers are stupid! although puting NA in number 2 is also stupid. I can't believe that GL or GLC can't pass Batman's books.
And no Invincible Iron Man?! This book is amazing and not alot of people reading it.
P.S- I liked NA #51 but it is not in my top 10. I liked Dr. Strang conversation and Caris baclo art in this book.
yes dude i wasted so much money on avengers titles and THEY SUCK ive got to say i used a good $200

MILLARs ULTIMATES is a classic.

otherwise i agree.

Some things that the 'majority' used to like:
-slavery
- disco
- the macarena
- parachute pants
- Vanilla Ice
- Rob Liefeld
Now...I can't tell which is worse...Rob Liefeld or slavery...

Pete (from the Stack/Comicbookclub) is a complete retard. If a book dosen't have wolverine or punisher in it he automatically hates it.
Comicculturewarrior and Craig from Grandlan comics reviews are the only ones who actually tell it like it is when it comes to the comics industry.

Jose my man is dead on, these other so called review shows are sheep, it's like someone at Marvel or DC is paying them.

Geoff Johns Avengers was straight dope.
Falcon got his due during his run
deemar325 2 years ago
Agreed, Olivier Coipel and johns did some great stuff.
The Kurt Busiek run with George Perez and Alan Davis on art was one of the great Avengers runs as well.

but as far as Amazing Spider-man, im not that dissapointed with the writing/art cosplay, - yet im not happy with the leap in continuity.
