This was the exit hymn for my dear Mother's funeral in Oct. 2010. As sad as I was, I was so happy, I had selected it as we walked out of the church with the organist and vocalist opening all the stops, it made me happy for the past 99 years. She went out in glory and she had previewed the hymn. Thank you for such a nice rendition.
As far as I know, the Catholic congregations here in Costa Rica don't sing either and to add, their Cathedrals are the ones with pipe organs. If you do hear the organ, it is because someone is playing something in a funny tune that no one knows.
Brings back a lot of memories, as I used to sing this as a boy treble in my Anglo-Catholic church in my younger days. Still brings tears to my eyes when I hear it sung, or when I have to play it as a church organist these days. ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICENT!! £ance.
This is really wonderful! I love the alternate harmonies, and the sound of the organ is quite lovely! The singing is good, but it'd be great to see and hear everyone in the pews picking up hymnals and singing this wonderful hymn like there's no tomorrow...something we all need to work on and strive for in our parishes...
You can look at the people who aren't singing, but if you care to actually listen to what's going on, you'd notice a good bit of organ and a good bit of singing. The glass is half full, folks. Give thanks.
C'mon, guys - if you're gonna sit in the front row, at least y'all could pick up the hymnal and try. Maybe the influx of escaping Episcopalians (like me) will liven the place up a bit...
I am an ELCA Lutheran who is a resident of South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (November 7, All Saints' Sunday), we sang this as our opening hymn. I played it as the closing hymn at a local Lutheran Church that I filled in at. It is #422 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship. God Bless all those who have gone before us.
Very few Catholic churches have music of this high quality, settling (or having imposed upon them) for the Haugen-Haas OCP mire. It is indeed disheartening to see the congregation not singing this fine quality hymn, but like it has been said below, Catholic tend to not sing like our Protestant separated brethren do.

@81sfp That really varies from parish to parish. Most of the Catholics in my area sing their hearts out at every Mass.

@81sfp I go to St. Rita Catholic Church in Harahan, La and they sing the whole mass.
