Shamans don't use drugs. They can reach the cosmic consciousness with an instrument or through dance. They can without any of these also. From my experience there is nothing like a samadhi or satori that comes from deep meditaion. Drugs stops your mind and make you reach cosmic consciousness by chemicals. Meditation does it without drugs and also gives you this subtle and continious orgasmic bliss which is much more powerfull than drugs.
