Larry helped me with a demo tape in 1990, when we were living in the same New Jersey town. He was a phenomenal musician and an even more amazing human being.
@nayjordan I can remember when he was talking about the studio , Larry was my cousin , I miss him a lot he always had something funny to say ! proud to be able to call him part of my family ,the way he had talked the studio was looking really good, well have to get busy thank you for the kind words he was an awesome man !
very nice job by Larry, I am very sad to hear of his passing. and I liked the tone on the guitar and he has a good crasp of the song, The band is much more than a "cover" band LOL
From Cleveland to New York no raido and only BST/Al Kooper eight track it couldn't have been any better. In the old VW Bug with my brother winter 1969
Larry was a year ahead of me in high school. He and his fellow bandmates were our heros. I'm watching this video over and over with tears in my eyes. We all followed his career from back home as best as we could. I've not seen a video of this quality and this late in his life before. I am so proud :)....yet so very sad. Thank you so much for posting this. I have posted it on Facebook, so you are likely to get more than a few visitors soon :) We all miss him so very much!!
@skifreak201 Thanks, skifreak201 for your heart-felt comments about Larry. Indeed, Larry is greatly missed by all who knew him and played with him. The world of music is forever at a great loss since his passing. NO ONE ever has or ever will play and sing like Larry DeBari.
Touches my soul, reaches down deep, grabs hold, and yanks it right up to my throat, and then I have to hug myself, and sigh. Strong Real Emotions. That is what this song does to me. Thank you for posting, it is good to feel.
guesting at a wedding, larry transformed "fame" with exceptional soloing and by adding diminished chords, moving voices and chord substitutions. we spoke of music, life on the road and difficulties in keeping relationships. i studied with jazz legend chuck wayne; we agreed to get together to play and share ideas. sadly that never happened. i just learned of his passing while intending to write an article about him for just jazz guitar. how very sad. what a loss for all of us. thnx for the clip.
@niwri7 Thanks for passing on that story, niwri7. That sounds like Larry all right. He would make every song he played his own! Indeed, this iteration of BS&T should have been called "The new sound of BS&T featuring Larry DeBari." He is greatly missed!
While i dont believe Al's soulful performance will ever be matched, Larry did the song complete justice vocally. An amazing performance of a perfect song... bravo.
wow!!!!! I´m speechless this group still really great, they have not loose their touch.....I remenber them from the 70´s and dancing to their music was always a pleasure specially the slow ones hahahaha......
I grew up with Larry and performed in a number of local bands with him. We both went to Berklee at the same time. I will always have the fondest memories of my old friend. Hard to believe he's gone. His musical talent is incomparable. One of a kind. Miss you dear friend.
Sorry I was being flippant, Al is phenomenal as a writer and performer. But musically Larry has a better voice, he's in tune on every note. I'm just blown away by this performance
Ahhhh.... great stuff. Larry recorded 1 last batch of tracks before he passed. Never before released. Perhaps coming out this year ( 2009). Watch for it.
Al Kooper era BS&T eclipsed in quality the more commercial David Clayton Thomas era band, imo. FM radio in my town used to play this great Kooper/BS&T tune a lot, 35-40 years ago. It's always been my fave BS&T song! Nice of Thomas & Co. to give recognition to Al by introducing and doing his song 25 years on. But I wish someone would upload the original too!
I can appreciate your respect for Al and he is a singer quite noteworthy...But for my money..and no disrespect intended, this guitar man tears this song up! He plays such a great guitar as well.
I belive I heard from Drumcam he as passed on which seems hard to believe..It was only fitting that DCT gave Al some deserving credit for his original vocal work on this great old blues tune...How about that BASS PLAYER! LETS GIVE HIM SOME TOO!!!
@Bobb9999 (Pt 1) Glad to see your mention of early FM radio.
Al Kooper's BST was one very notable standout in the early days of FM broadcast. The wide-spread popularity of the post-Kooper BST made the original band under Kooper comparatively something of a footnote.
The David Clayton Thomas-era band had great arrangements -- not to be dismissed. However, I always thought that Al Kooper's BST caused a shift in music of that period, b/c of their successfully experimental writing and arrangement.

@Bobb9999 (Pt 2) The early days of FM radio exposed much great music, such as Al Kooper's BST. Other bands that come to mind, whose sound was part of those early days of FM radio, whose earlier lineup of players would eventually change, significantly changing the bands' sounds and direction, are Fleetwood Mac (Peter Green-era), and King Crimson (with the In The Court of the Crimson King lineup).
DCT's cover of this tune from "Live & Improvised" is amazing enough (Band included). But Debari's voice here is just a bit closer to the original version, with a touch more grit and soul. When Larry testifies, (about 3:35 in) that, "I'm only flesh and blood!," you can tell that even the audience in this clip believes him by their response. Add the incredible interpretation by this version of BS&T and you've got one helluva trip in store for ya...
It's such a gift to hear and see the late great Larry DeBari singing. What a beautiful version of this song. Larry was so talented! He was also an amazing person who continues to be greatly missed. We love you Larry!
I died many nights to this song many years ago, brought out alot of emotional meamories of my first love, now I'm old a sick, that's life

BS & T without Al Kooper is a good as CCR without Fogerty. They suck. What's the photographer from "Just Shoot Me" do singing lead vocals ?
