Say what you want about supposedly "edgy" artists like ... ohh ... Marilyn Manson or any number of screamers and loud guitar wranglers ...
Not a single one of them could ever work a lyric such as " ... ran over a man named Juan" into a song so casually and with such effect as Newman can. His lyrics evoke the true twistedness of human nature; all without a speck of makeup or a single instage explosion.
@bapyou I understand your argument, and I'm not trying to flame, but... Stop making music a competition. Different people like different types of music for different reasons. That's it. It's all opinion. Hell, even Justin Bieber - while I can't stand his music and do indeed love making jokes about him - has credibility. Young girls LOVE his music, for whatever reason that I don't understand, but that doesn't make him better or worse than anyone else. Stop the competition. :D
Who was talking competition? I was discussing the qualities of Newman's music vs. that of others. When I was 14 I liked music I loath today. You grow, evolve, mature. Marilyn Manson's shtick is loaded with gimmicry. Newman comes from an intellectual perch inhabited by few if any other American songwriters. Such a statement hasn't anything to do with competition but, rather, an honest assessment of artistic merit.
That's a rarity. Someone apologizing. Unlike those who presume to "lead" us. Here's one of my favorite discoveries of the past month:
"I will never apologize for the United States of America. I don't care what the facts are." ~ George Herbert Walker Bush, 41st President of the United States
@bapyou The most anyone can every say is they enjoy 'this' or 'that' more :) they can give any explanations they want, but there's only theories. And sometimes they stick on other people and they somehow agree, sometimes they don't.

@bapyou My apologies, I misread your comment. You seem to be one of the few people in the comment section of a music video with a brain. Haha.
I agree with your points.

@bapyou i would say the only other on that perch is warren zevon
and id venture to say even the very best others (imo jimmy webb steve earle john hiatt
john prine steve goodman) would say they look up at it
but all six of these 'birds' fly (or flew sadly) in very rarified air
