@Fading0815 Thats the Fat sounding MCI-JH 24 series 24 track machine. This recorder was favored for its smooth fat sound. I use this model and they sound hella good especially running the tape at 30 ips fast speed you see here!
Man it goes to show how many people have never experienced reels. But the way it works is like you dragging fingers in the dirt your finger represents a track as u drag it it records or lined paper. So if if you record one track you rewind the tape back to record another track. The tape machine has a recording head with many fingers on it that record on the tape like it was lined paper each line represents a track. Hope I made it clear. Oh and each track has a separate out put that can be rout
I wish i got a chance to meet J-dilla! I would have begged him to be a mentor to me! lol! some day i will get my productions close to his level of complexity.. Prayerfully... R.I.P J. Dilla
Thats awesome how it automatically splits up the tracks when you dump em from the Reel...atleast I think it automatically splits...still, its an experience to witness it happen first hand...
@ADdadirector there's no "splitting" so to speak. Think of the reel to reel tape as being several tapes side by side making it super wide and able to hold more tracks. The reel to reel player has multiple outputs one for each track so 24 tracks-> 24 outputs, and from there it goes on to the mixing table and the pro tools soundcard with the inputs.
@imsoulpirelli - The reel holds 24 tracks on it and is about 16 minutes total time. The last track is used for time code to sync up midi instruments or another tapemachine. This is all Analog. There is really only one reel (left one) and the other reel is just a take up reel. That just stays on the machine.
@imsoulpirelli This is analog, i have one! The digital reel to reel came in 1 inch and 1/2 inch for 24/48 tracks as a Digital audio stationary head,,better known as DASH format, which sounds real stale sounding to the ears, as analoge color the sound. All reel to reel uses 2 reels. hope that helps!
bwoyyyyy! this is like crazy!! the quality of that reel is crystal! check the hi-hats riding off g!! dilla is a alien!!!!! i keep watchin this footage over n over again hoping i missed something, just a little bit of dilla!! man i cant get my head round how they can split it all up from the reel! mad! this a fuckin priceless piece of footage!! i love u dilla, im continuing ur work! ur side kick RAZ-PRO
@kmerf the problem with the reels is that every time it's played back the quality of the reel is dropped. It's kind of like a vinyl record. Eventually after like 100 plays the quality is distinguishably lower. The digital format is not the best quality, but it's the best option for editing.
This may sound like sacrilege but could this mean that Barak may possibly release instrumentals or at the very least a remaster? Todd Fairall is the only one that could do a remastering of 'Fantastic Vol. 2' justice, since we no longer have Jay (in my opinion). Ten year anniversary coming up next June.
this is awesome...

Albums recorded to analog sound much better. CDs and mp3s from analog recordings sound way better than purely digital sourced.

This is why hip-hop started sucking in the 2000's, the sound was lost.

imsoulpirelli 1 year ago
@imsoulpirelli nah man think of a multitrack portastudio. You can have more than one track on a single reel.

why not just keep it on the reels and mix it. the reels sound better than pro tools anyway. way bigger less compressed sound.
