The problem is that Lucas feels he has to spoon feed character motivation to us when it's obvious from the dialogue the Greedo intends to kill Han Solo. "Over my dead body."...."That's the idea. I've been looking forward to this for a long time." Based on that it was always obvious that Han was defending himself. No need to spell it out. But what's done is done I suppose.

It is worse than just "point blank range", Greedo had a gun trained on Solo for 45 seconds. How can you miss at point blank range while having a gun trained on somebody for almost a minute? If you have that long to point a gun at somebody, sitting in a relaxed position, at point blank range, you shouldn't miss. And the digital edit sucks. I can tell it was shooped.

First off, how the HELL could Greedo MISS from that far away?

Second, if someone's pointing a gun at you, and you have a gun of your own, you would be stupid NOT to shoot them first! He could shoot you at any moment, why would you wait for him to shoot first before shooting him?

Thirdly, it diminishes Han's character arc significantly if he doesn't shoot Greedo right away in this scene.

I would Imagine Lucas decided it wasn't family friendly/kid friendly to have one of the heroes kill without "reason". He decided to turn it into defending hiself from an actual attack, rather than respond to words with death.
