The reason Billy Joel came up with "Songs in the Attic" was because he wanted to re-record some of his earlier songs off of his lesser albums, now that he had a set backing band. I think a double CD expanded version of this LP should be released which would include the two instrumentals from Streetlife Serenade that are "Root Beer Rag" and "The Mexican Connection."
The original version is, but Billy hated that entire 1971 LP since it was recorded/mastered at the wrong speed and, after having initially listened to it, according to his back story, he "ripped it off of the turntable, ran out of the house and threw the record down the street."
This song was from an album released in 1971, but it sure seems as though it was written about Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears and all the rest.
I didn't even know about this song until he played it in an appearance on Conan O'Brien in recent years. It's nice to make "discoveries" like that, even if they're a little late. :)
Such an amazing, amazing artist. How many other singer/songwriters have such a versatile powerful voice, those instrumental chops, his level of lyric and melodic craft, and harmonic richness? Not many.
Really amazing song, I've been a Joel fan all my life and somehow hadn't heard Songs in the Attic until this song was used in Consolevania. Amazing track

christie lee, big shot, uptown girl, shes got a way, always a woman, shes right on time, if not those gimme more info even a line or 2 I know most of his stuff.
Songs In The Attic is probably Joel's best album. It's certainly the one I listen to the most - and never get tired of. Stirs up memories of Tokyo in 1986 when I was thin, poor and loving every minute of life in Japan...
This particular performance is form July 1981 @ a club called "Sparks" on Long Island. The gig was recorded and filmed with the intent of creating videos of songs to promote Songs In The Attic.Other songs from this show that were made into videos include: Say Goodbye To Hollywood, You're My Home and Los Angelenos.
The version of Everybody Loves You Now on "Songs In The Attic" comes from a show in Washington D.C. during the summer of 1980.
whats the name of his song where I think he sings about an ex-wife or something it's quite upbeat, can't seem to find it cause I dont know the name of it.
@pliskenlee uptown girl. but hes had 3 wives and written songs about all of them. if its upbeat, its uptown girl. if its somewhat sad, shes always a woman to me. and more recently, all my life.
@vinnym089 not true. it's a compilation of recordings from Madison Square Garden, Bayou in DC, St. Paul Civic Center, Toad's Place, Paradise Club in Boston, Milwaukee Arena, the Spectrum in Philly, and Horizon in Chicago.
Oh! One more question to whomever may know. I tried to purchase this on iTunes from the "Songs in the Attic" album and the version I found was slightly different. Does anyone know where I can find this one?
ZiggyS - this is the same arrangement and time period as the version on Songs in the Attic, but it's not the precise recording. Not sure this video is "buyable" on iTunes or anywhere else.
Yeah and the Song Big Shot, I heard he like, went out and made an ass of himself and went to write a song about it. I don't know for sure but Thats just what i heard from a reliable source...
WOW, this is phenomonal. I've seen like every version of this song but hadn't seen this. This isn't from the songs in the attic album. Must've been from one of the live shows they were doing at the time of the recording of the album. SO good!!!
his notes inside the album cover said he was so pissed off at her that he felt like everyone loved her at the time, but they really didn't. A little affair ending badly. I just CRANK the crap out of this song in my car... it's so energetic and he sings it with such passion on the lp. I just can't get enough of it!
Same i've been listing to him for all of my twenty years on earth and never once got bored, try find someone like this on mtv!!! sad but true. ps if you like billy check out some of my tracks well there's only one but i'll be adding more, its very easy to see his influence on me.
An intriguing point about his music as he states so many times in his own words is that many of these songs are also about him - he is reflecting so many times on his own life - "you aint got the time to go to cold spring harbor anymore" - he''s talking about himslef
Thanks. Now I'm curious: It sounds pretty much alike the version on "Songs in the attic", but I'm sure it is not the same (his voice sounds less stressed in the highest peaks). Another concert on the same tour?
I think the song's about someone who sells themself in a metaphorical sense. Everybody loves them, but do they love everyone? "Feelings do not matter in your(the person's) 'game'," and so this person has lost that humanly connection with people who love them or rather love who they are on the outside, their guise.
With regard to "they all want your white body" that could be an allusion to the superficiality of a femme fatal to whom "ev'rything revolves on what you(she)does."
You can feel that he meant every lyric... I am young but the way he captures every word and transforms every detail is just unreal... I am a hopeless romantic like he is so I guess I can relate
no not necessarily... this one is more lively and plus billy doesnt screw up the words "white body" in this recording... he kinda choked on the note in songs in the attic. if you are referring to the song though... then yes. they are the same. :)

I just have to add, at the risk of sounding just a little "fangirl"-esc, I dig his facial expressions when he sings! Especially this particular song! ^_^
This is the way it should be for Billy. I wish he would put the old band back together and pare it down as far as musicians. These guys here really helped define his sound and to me it's just not the same without Liberty on drums. Mark Rivera is always fantastic on the sax and I suppose for the younger folks who never got the chance to see Billy live before the 2008 version of him isn't bad but to me there's just way too many people cluttering up that stage. It's lost the magic like it was here.
I think this was recorded at Toad's Place, New Haven CT before Los Angelenos from the same album. The cameras the same, hair on everyone is the same, and the stage is layed out exactly the same
Nowadays generation cant even remember Gershwin...never heard of him. This will also happen to billy in about 60 years. Time comes and goes, just enjoy his music :)
Never heard of George Gershwin...are you kidding ? Then again, when I was listening to lots of rock 30 years ago, I probably did not know about guys like Gershwin, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, Irving Berlin, etc, either.... Guys like McCartney, Lennon, Dylan and Brian Wilson come near them. Guys like Billy Joel a bit further down on the ladder, IMO. Then again, to each is own.
Great! Mom loves ya!! 😍😍😝
