What people have pointed out is that if you are going sing at 99 years old this is not a piece one would choose! Perhaps a light song instead. Which makes her achievement even more remarkable. Some phrases remain very attractive.
We should all be lucky to stand up at 99, much lest sing to a room full of well dressed people and get THEM to stand up for us. A true gem and strictly once in a 100 years performance. Thank you
she knows she does not sing as she used to. But she sings with emanating glow more than ever before, her life emanates from her singing. She loves to sing, and this love too, emanates from that 99 years old vocal fold. Brava maestra.
Magda Olivero was probably the last exponent of the verismo style and she never stops working on her voice so that even now she her intentions are clear. Being able to sing at the age of 99 is, of course, unusual; but this is not the main point. Liking or not liking what she does is not the question. She embodies a lost art. When she passes on, may her example give us hold on another world, another time and another art form. David J. S. Gleaton
Fantastic woman, fantastic technique! I love her and wish to see her if possible. Does anyone know how can I get in touch with her? I would love to discuss this with her...Thanks for the wonderful gift of being for us!

Wow, this takes courage but I received as I had so many years ago when she "debuted" @ Met here--and then, a master class, a vivid & inspirational learning in presentational skills--here, the same! Tx for posting!
Nowadays a lot of so called opera fans don't know Olivero. They go for the chirp-chirp-voices and think that's what music is all about. Olivero owned that role and many more. The state of her voice is not of importance here, it's the fact that she could still sing. Whenever I see Francesca, Adriana or Tosca in a live performance I dearly miss singers like Olivero (and Cerquetti).
what a charisma! I've discovered this absolute genius while looking for the Italian best singer evere: Mina...they both stronger then passing time...amazing...
Based on the ratings, resulting in atotal of 4.5, apparently someone gave this performance by Signora Oliviero less than 5 stars. I cannot help but wonder why, because this is absolutely marvellous, just stunning. Brava!!!!
Grande coraggio, grande cuore e grande temperamento!!
Grande!
@laoniricArte1 Don't mean to criticise you, but the word maestra is very inappropriate, where as maestro in a term of respect used for an artist in Italian, maestra is used to address a lady who teaches in primary school

I think that Ponselle and Olivero have some things in common. Both they could "schmieren". As far as Ponselle concerns you can hear that in her live-performances of Traviata and Carmen. She can schream and shout. The same as Magda Olivero always "schmiert" by using her capacity to (too) often change between pianissimo and forte. She had an amazing breathcontrol.
But both sopranos are legends now and we are happy to hear them at their height.
Ponselle the 1 without question. Other one is a wild card I guess...there are several (Tebaldi, Moffo, Zeani, Millo,) I like equally. It's hard to pick for sopranos because there are so many. Ponselle stands out for the incredible beauty and quality of her voice, and Olivero for her ability to 'live the character'. Not in terms of acting but in terms of singing. She was a true example of a singer who acted with her voice.
One should stop criticizing all the time. Olivero is one of the greatest veristo soprani of the century. Certainly not a beautiful voice, but perfectly tailored for this type of repertoire. Who could be so convincing at age 99? Who could still epitomize in such a grand way and style music? So she needs a bit of respect and I'm glad many other YouTube friends share my view. Thanks and bless them. And may The Lord bless Signora Olivero. A living legend. Grazie a tutti.
You shut up and DIE!!!! Yoy stupid, ridiculous, ignorant, american piece of trash! How DARE you comment like that on the greatest singer of the last 100 years? Do you understand nothing about Art?!!!
There is no reason to insult others just because they don't happen to share your own beliefs. Besides, claiming that Mme. Olivero is the greatest singer of the last 100 years does seem to be rather biased, considering her obtrusive caprino vibrato which stems from a faulty breathing technique, and her verismo style which is totally out of place in works like "Medea" and "La traviata" and which to modern ears sounds exaggerated even in verismo works.
I apologize, I was over the edge, but he did not make a critisism on her voice or technique (when she was still singing) Here is a rare video of a livin legend still healthy and lucid at 100, and he didn't care what she has to say. You don't say "shut up" to Olivero!
And her career spanned 50 years, how could she portray excellent Toscas even in the late 70's without perfect control? I agree about the verismo style but how many of today' s knowlegeable singers do justice to Medea? At least Olivero was authentic and gave you chills!
I understand how upset you were, and you do not have to apologise. The things people say! Olivero , faulthy breathing technique, people are sooooooooooooo ingnorant.! The prime example of a singers control of crescendos, diminuendos, pianissimo singing, diction, expression etc is Oliveros. A voice that lasted over 50 years. True, like Callas you either love it or you do not like the sound that she makes but do not talk about her faulty teachniques. Singers today can learn so much from her.
OK, OK, I apologized for my language, but here she is 99 years old, it´s more important what she has to say.
What did you expect to get from her singing here? She has sung this aria a million times, ever since the 1940's. There are gorgeous versions, especially a live 1959 performance at LaScala. Find that.
marvellous. who has not the sensibility to be touch loudly in his heart is not able to judge, he would look at oneself and try to solve his problems.
Anyone who uses the word "narcissism" in connection with Magda Olivero doesn't know what they are talking about. The woman is a paragon of graciousness and humility, simply one of the nicest people God ever put on earth.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
She skipped about three quarters of the aria. The poor accompanist had to take a second to figure out what the hell was going on...
And, sorry, but that speech was all narcissism maskerading as humility. I wish she had just said "I love this music, and I miss singing, so I want to sing for you." But all the BS about how she heard a voice commanding her to sing - and how she MUST obey. Come on... It just spoils it.
Do you know how many lies make this world beautifull? Personally I believe her, the dream she had is true. The fact that she is able to sing a frase at 99 and talk like she does not have age at all.
@Klytemnest , Most people at 100 can't even remember their name! Yes there was certainly a little narcissism, and why not, if we are all here exercising our narcissism adding our comments, I mean who gives a fiddler's fart what we think! Why shouldn't the great Olivero, I'm sure she misses singing more than any of us will ever know, it's amazing that an opera fan who chooses the nickname Klytemnest should not appreciate the power of dreams! she is still a diva
Simply wonderful, this woman is the link to the great and graceful singing of days gone. Very few can equal her in the versimo repertoire. Madga always knew her who to use her voice to great dramatic effect. Her voice could also be very beautiful in ful control of crescendos and diminuendos. Her death scenes in Fedora, Francesca etc are simply out of this world and the very best. Love her, thank you for posting.

Who could be so convincing at age 99? Who could still epitomize in such a grand way and style music? So she needs a bit of respect and I'm glad many other YouTube friends share my view. Thanks and bless them. And may The Lord bless Signora Olivero. A living legend. Grazie a tutti.

Perhaps she has not heard the famous adage, "Shut up and sing!"

You shut up and DIE!!!! Yoy stupid, ridiculous, ignorant, american piece of trash! How DARE you comment like that on the greatest singer of the last 100 years? Do you understand nothing about Art?!!!
DemisLian 2 years ago

DemisLian 2 years ago 2
And her career spanned 50 years, how could she portray excellent Toscas even in the late 70's without perfect control? I agree about the verismo style but how many of today' s knowlegeable singers do justice to Medea? At least Olivero was authentic and gave you chills!
DemisLian 2 years ago 2

Find that.

She is one of the greatest spinto sopranos. And Riccardo Zandonai discovered her when she was still a student.

marvellous. who has not the sensibility to be touch loudly in his heart is not able to judge, he would look at oneself and try to solve his problems.

Anyone who uses the word "narcissism" in connection with Magda Olivero doesn't know what they are talking about. The woman is a paragon of graciousness and humility, simply one of the nicest people God ever put on earth.

Fully agree with you. Have met her many times in Amsterdam and Hilversum.

Give her a break, the beautiful lady is 99 years old, how many people half her age do you know who can speak so comprehensively and fluently?
robertdonkers 2 years ago 2
Do you know how many lies make this world beautifull? Personally I believe her, the dream she had is true. The fact that she is able to sing a frase at 99 and talk like she does not have age at all.
ilbacioditosca 2 years ago 3
