It was called actually filmed in 1986 but it ran for about five years both on national TV and in cinemas and was filmed in 35mm for cinema release. McEwans released a 3" mini CD of the original soundtrack from all 3 ads starting with Escher in 1986 through to the last one in 1989. It included the actually Win remix with the advert lyrics but without the iron bells.
I have to disagree with a few here...Great track by WIN [from the album Uh! Tears Baby] and a lovely lager, Thing is i cant find this in any superstore only on tap in clubs...grrrrrr...lol
great ad crap beer but i miss it it was so 1980s remember the big ads between them and tennents, no one drinks them now in cans they are crap. ah the 80s in scotland crap beer which we all drank because of this ad,
There was a sister advert for McEwans Lager at the same time. It shows a man and a woman in some sort of spy killing scene at a train station. The soundtrack to that was Hipsway's The Broken Years. Anyone have a video to that ad please?
McEwans Lager was a great lager, Certainly up there with Carlsberg, I fear the negative comments are more toward the most succesful team in the world trophy wise regarding said sponsorship, Great upload moosh, Cheers.
the mid to late 80s was whan mcewans and tennants made all their big tv ads they were like mini films i remember they were on tv all the time back then. in scotland it was the only beer sold in pubs i think
Even the best advertising in the world could not sell McEwan's lager - probablly the most disgusting lager in the world, second only to Tennents. . . .
The worst the beer - the more they need advertising.
I quite liked Tenants actually. But I also thought that the worst lager in the world happened to be a lil ole' brew called Hampden Lager! Ha! Still, it is still the best advertising. I live in the US now and they have no imagination whatsoever.
Lots of negative comments about McEwans Lager here - but I actually quite like it! But Dalgia - you are 100% correct - Hampden Lager is officially the worst lager in the world. :)
I think it is a superb advert and a superb short film in of itself. The dystopian world it portrays, with the rag-swathed drudges pushing round giant rocks to power a clock, relates to us all and the grind of our daily lives. The workers look out of their Orwellian prison and see the people in the pub laughing, joking, enjoying life. They are envious. And rightly so! The ad is brilliant because the product is so centrla to it and you can't miss that tis is a McEwan's lager advert.
Bloody hell, beer adverts influenced by Albert Camus with allusions to state control (and a subtle critique of the drinking culture). The 80s were indeed cerebral times.
Had a bad memory they'd changed the lyric to "you've got the power to generate beer" but thankfully that's not the case.
Also remember going with my mum to see Chinheads in an Irvine pub at the time the ad was on telly and being very disappointed they weren't actually on their heads drinking pints upside down.
kevanhughes i too am looking for that one though i have it on beta but the sounds gone but i do know the song gose its a fact its a fact its a well known fact that sometimes oppisets do attract. we need this advert
You, me and everyone else by the look of it .... have got it myself somewhere, amongst the multitude of VHS tapes that I have from the mid 80's - as I recall it's in a break during the 'yoof' programme 'Switch', I remember it, as The Style Council were on ! Must be someone out there who can point us in the right direction ... Please ?
This is based on 'The myth of Sysiphus' by french philosopher Albert Camus. It is meant to depict the futility of working lives in a capitalist society.
Follow up to that one is them walking (one still carrying keg) and stumble into the Edinburgh Military Tatto; queue bagpipe music etc. Finishing pun "I never knew you had a tattoo Wulie". Pure briliance....
does anybody have the Tennants Special ads, the ones with the TWO Blues Brothers, first one I recall must have been around '82 World Cup, Blues Brother guy dives off diving board at Spanish poolside "Esta multo bueno, by the way". Next ad they're playing gowf at night whilst a boring wedding takes place, they gatecrash and swap the barrels for Seventy Shilling and hey presto it's party time, that ad ends with them walking away across gowf course; "Is that heavy", reply "No, Special". Brilliant..
Graet record by Win - saw them supporting the Housemartins in Brum in '86 ... cool ! However, looking for another McEwans lager advert tune, it accompanies two boots with human faces fighting ( no, I'm not on drugs !! ) ... the song goes something like ' it's a fact. it;s a fact, its a fact it's a fact. its a well known fact, that sometimes opposites do attract' ... Any ideas ? Please put me out of my misery ....
I can't believe it was 20 years ago...they broke the mould when they made this one. I see lots of people mentioning the one with Hipsway's 'Tinder' as the backing music (also a classic) but I can't find it anywhere. Does anyone know how one can get hold of it?
cd is very rare, after a lot of looking i managed to get a 12" version online for just a fiver. just got a usb turntable now so it will soon be on my mp3. :)

Thanks to who ever posted this, i've been looking for this ad for ages as it used to scare me when I was a little kid and I can remember my mum when they stoped showing this ad claiming she got it banned and told them to put the chins on, she didn't really but when your 4 years old, you are easily fooled.
BTW i'm trying to find the chins one, but I can't find it anywhere
Something so real was by Love decree, and the music to the third McEwans ad was Tinder by Hipsway. (The one where the McEwans logo kept popping up in each scene somewhere in the background).
Me to i can remember seeing the animation at school in about 1993 on some old tape. And i know exactly what you mean about the album cover. Nice one i forgot about that.
