  • sure she can play it, but she doesn' any heart into it. asians will never be able to play like whites

  • @JelliMonster And you will always be jealous of those you are negative about, especially when you are showing your lack of intellignce by implying that this piece needs heart in it. Make sure you eat your turkey and apple pie, as you can continue being a sweet turkey.

  • @JelliMonster you are an idiot. i really hope you're trolling

  • This is how this song is meant to be played.

  • like her playing but the dress....

  • @sumimimi0 Your comment is so weird; How does her dress affect on your impression of her performance?; which means, in other words, dress cannot diminish her talent. And second, anyway the dress is already pretty enough.

  • Beautiful!

  • I'm just worried she's gonna hit her head in the middle of a performance! :( that wouldn't be good! Btw, great performance! :)

  • here is a pianist who goes far beyond the technical demands of the piece and manages to bring ideas and personality to this very well known masterpiece.

she understands and shapes the SOUNDS of this piece like no one else.

btw, some foolish people insist to say that this is "just a study"...

this is a masterpiece. it's not about arpeggios nor the technique, it's about vital energy.

  • Adorei esta interpretação!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow, she plays really good for having small fingers.

  • Maravilhosa!!!!!!!!

  • I've had the luck of hearing her in person, and videos never do her complete justice... She's got so much soul and energy, and she puts it all into the music! It's always a delight to hear her play, she has such technical competency. Not to mention it's accompanied by such pure emotion during performance, which is absolutely breathtaking. Thanks for posting!

  • BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • BEST 2512 IVE HEARD ON YOUTUBE.

  • I love her performance! She is a beautiful person too.

  • nice interpretation

  • Brava!! It's no wonder she was one of the Ciburn winners!

When and where did this recital took place?

  • miss son you did it well, please listen georges cziffra, thank you

  • for people who don't know, i have never seen such vigorous movements before, only this video, her movement was too exaggerated which i don't like to here. however, she has been top 3 in various international competitions so,, her recent video, done in seoul, wearing blue dress, conducted by myung whoon chung, she doesn't have irritating movements,

  • @sumimimi0 her movements are not irritating, it shows passion and emotion

  • @Garudanime i did not say that... that is what everyone says but i fine it okay because when i play piano, i move like her.... i won't say that is irritating if myself, i do those movements.... anyways she is a great pianist,,, i love this piece the way she played and expressed.

  • I've met her! She is an extremely talented pianist, a very nice woman, and pretty chill just like anybody else.

  • foreshadowing scriabin much?

  • its a very fun piece to play...i personally love it , my opinion is i think it sounds better a little bit slower. and once you learn something like that, you have the motivation to sit at the piano for hours to learn more amazing pieces just like this one. i also love the revolutionary etude, this is my favorite though. and yes, i do know the piece, yet im only 13, so fuck off noobs!!

  • @hektorear You are absolutely right. It's really fun to play. I find the "interrupted arpeggios" are the toughest, especially when the hands get all jumbled ... With such beautiful music at your fuingertips, why do you have to add such ugly language to your post though? It's really not necessary.

  • Having seen most of her YouTube videos I actually dare to claim she is the best young pianist in the world, taking everything into account; musicality, technique, charisma...

  • youthfull powerfull and catching

  • Very good interpretation. Other good interpretation is that of Valentina.

    But I prefer this one

  • The most fitting conclusion to the etudes, this one is breathtaking when you listen to Op 25 in order.

  • Brilliant, I doubt anyone could improve on this performance.. I hope she records a DVD she is wonderful...

  • a lot of famous pianist, cellist, violinist are from korea!! i mean from asians, koreans are the best i think. sarah chang(korean who was born in america), kyung wha chung, dong min lim, myung wha chung, myung hoon chung, dong min lim, dong hyeok lim, chang hanna

  • one of the best interpretations i've heard. i wish though that there's more accent on the first note of each phrase

  • 00:33 - 00:36 i love how her body moved in that black dress, while playing one of my favorite pieces.

  • una delle migliori interpretazioni in quanto a espressività...magnifica :)

  • beautiful girly. u played it the best of anyone i heard on here.

  • This is very very good. I can distinguish the notes unlike other I've seen playing this song. She doesn't go fast nor slow.. just right. Good Job =)

  • beautiful playing, yeol eum son. i've watched your video a number of times now!

  • She's South Korean, not Chinese

  • And what you're got to get straight, modelstatue, is that insantlye is Romanian. Whoops. If you had no prejudice of your own, maybe you wouldn't have been blinded to the fact that his/her English was so terribly poor that he/she couldn't have possibly been American in the first place. "play very very good than this chinese"? Kidding? Click the name, you'll see Romanian under country. So what YOU'VE got to get straight is to get off the Americans are stupid bandwagon. You were equally ignorant.

  • Comment removed

  • hahahahahaha!!!!! OMGOMGOMG. the only ignorant person here is you. obviously your comment was directed at the original poster. thanks for the tip on close-reading. the bottom line, whether you laugh awkwardly and try to backtrack or not, is that you assumed incorrectly, and made a mockery of yourself in the process, displaying your own pitiful ignorance. i would challenge you to distinguish between europeans or africans? good luck. ignorance is relative.

  • O my, both of you shut up. You are both ignorant. Modelstatue, don't assume that people are American without proof. It was wrong calling Americans stupid. And jszajb, you are shallow for assuming that he was directing the comment at insantlye. U don't know his motive, u did not type it. Also, why did you use Europeans and Africans? Implying that he is stupid for sticking up for his own race is mean! From the looks of it, he just got angry for the common stereotype that all Asians are the same.

  • Don't take these comments so offensively, you seem to be pointing out every extremely little detail to make modelstatue look even more ignorant. Both of you just stop, calm down, and enjoy the beautiful music by this master of the piano.

  • The truth that I see from this argument is that both of you exposed and mocked yourselves. Modelstatue exposed how ignorant he can be when it comes to defending his race against Asian stereotypes and jszajb exposed how mean and hurtful he could be by constantly insulting modelstatue's intelligence by implying that he cannot distinguish a European and African apart. Ignorance is on both of your shoulders. ChOpStIcKs is right, both of you just recognize your wrongs and stop arguing.

  • jszajb, by saying that insantlye's english was bad that he couldnt have been american, you offended me and all other foreigners out there. I am from france, an american citizen and my english is good. but there are foreigners out there with good english, and americans out there with bad english. dont generalize like that. you are very shallow like chopsticksdhk said.

  • And FrenchNapoleonChief, now you're just picking a fight for the hell of it. I never said anywhere that foreigners couldn't have great English - in fact I know hundreds.

  • Honestly, both jszajb and modelstatue have some growing up to do. This is a stupid reason to be fighting when both of you are equally ignorant, deal with it. And jszajb, I have watched a few of your videos and it seems you dream to be a comedian and that you just graduated college. Is this how a graduate acts? Comedians must learn to accept criticism, they will deal with it a lot in their lives. Modelstatue, I have no idea about u, but dont take things so seriously, it will get you no where.

  • To clarify: my point was to distinguish between Europeans of various nationalities, and then separately, Africans of various nationalities. However, modelstatue and I have resolved our differences via private message. Thank you all for helping us sort it out. I apologize for the disturbance. Now let's all relish the beautiful music at hand.

  • This piece makes my arms incredibly tight and I can never get through it. Yeol Eum Son has one of the freest arms I've ever seen, even when she was walking on the stage at the Van Cliburn, you could see how free her arms were. She is amazing.

  • I'm learning this piece.. tips anyone??

  • Like to watch you play, but as i read comments and i don't see you playing, the music slips away from me. You're all in the music, but in some way it doesn't come over to me. Great technique and tempo though! Respect!

  • if you play piano and football(soccer) you are hot

  • her melody is so beautiful. i love it !!!

  • She plays with alot of heart. It's a very good performance. This piece can be played in a way that makes it incredibly boring, but this performance is very exciting.

  • A pianist worth mentioning and a performance worth listening to, again, and again and again...

  • bravoooo

  • wow, thats all i have to say

  • In my opinion, she plays very well, but your argument is pretty silly. Of course amateurs can tell also whether they like the performance or not... it's personal opinion and should be respected.

  • v1etchick - you're wrong. We must be able to make musical judgments regardless of our own abilities. Let's say I dislike Horowitz's rendition of Brahms's 1st piano concerto or Heifetz's take on the Chaconne. They are musical giants; I am not. Yet I am justified in criticizing them. If that weren't true, musical judgments would be impossible since arguably no one plays as well as Horowitz or Heifetz. But musical judgments, and aesthetic judgments in general, are an essential part of culture.

  • v1etchick:

in your case, people wouldn't be able to vote for a president or criticize him or her for their actions because we can't do what they do or do it better than them right?

  • What a passionate performance! Wonderful!

  • Wonderful, 10!

  • It's absolutely a GREAT performance! Although, personally, I think the wind on this ocean is going a bit too much up and down. I would prefer the pace a bit more constant. But in terms of technical performance; it's indeed stunning! Bravo!!

  • This is simply perfect!!!!

  • What a way to really dig deep into those keys; Not a single missed note!

...your sense of dynamic is incredible!

  • very good! She should slow it down just a tad, and bring out those top notes. Play around with the tempo slightly and build a climax. Such a fun piece!

  • Trully beautifully played!

  • i don't know that she is really skillful! congrats for her a lot!

It's one of the best reocrdings of this etude that I know!

  • Das Stück ist von Chopin.

  • she done it really great.she is dynamic and she expresses piece's emotions clearly than everyone i think.come on.you have to try hard to play it.i still think that we have more difficult than this but it is one from the difficult pieces.only when you will play this piece you can express your opinion and as it seems noone of you here have already played it except of me.xemosintinghtsx she is playing it very good it has no mistakes

  • She is very good but I dont like her approach to chopin and to this etude, I find it a little cold, maybe if she slows down a little (sorry for my bad english)she could get a better version of herself, but congrats anyway!!

  • I don't agree with you !

The tempo is what it was supposed to be !

A can see her spirit intact to the music.

    She has deliver it victoriously.

It's not easy to play even half that well you know...

    Dave B.

  • Bravo! Wonderful even with limited dynamics.

  • how is something like that possible...

  • That is only possible with a certain something you must be born with!

    Isn't she amazing?

  • lol thats a stupid statement.

so people without talent cant play this?

its not even a very difficult piece, especially for chopin.

and to autodidax.. um i guess you're not much of a musician. and i actually think the dynamics were good, not limited at all. she hit some wrong notes between 1:50-2:10 really annoying

  • I'm pretty sick if people misinterpreting my posts. Obviously this is not the place to have a developed two-sided discussion. Not being able to see into the meaning of my words is rather weak-minded. I can play this piece, I know it's not as difficult as it seems. But to reach the determination it requires to approach such refined technique is NOT something that just anyone can do. You play this too? Bravo; you're not ordinary. But calling people stupid on YT will get you NOWHERE in life.

  • hey man, what i felt reading your post is that you think this requires genius, which is false. i have students who are almost talentless, but they are good technicians and they can play these and other impressive pieces. what else could i interpret from your comment?

but you know, sorry if your so pissed. Keeping playing the keys though and peace out

  • i agree with xemosintightsx.

you aren't born with the talent or the determination, you develop it, and no sonic, you do not have to be born with a special gift to learn and develop that talent.

  • Yup, talent on any instrument is built up by how much you commit to it. If you put in long hours of practice and get good at it, you can be considered talented because you have the ability to play well. However, some are definitely born with talent or are meant to play a certain instrument because they automatically learn fast and develop a good foundation fast. Theres a man named Derek Paravicini, now he is EXTREME talent. Youtube search him, hes amazing!

  • I am so sad that the recording didn't capture the full dynamic range of the performance. So much of the resonance has been truncated, though, still beautiful...

  • indeed, this would have been badass had the quality been better

  • agree. I watched 10+ of the same piece on Youtube today, This is my favourite recording. She really capture the passion of the last of the 24 Etude.

  • I agree, it's a terrific performance. She puts a lot of musical shape into which very few pianists do. It is usally just performed as a test as speed and power. She has the speed but the musicanship too. I would say this is world class and better than a lot of established names.

  • @jegspillerpiano i guess i'd have to agree with you

i notice details included here that others seem to lack when they play this

  • @jegspillerpiano - your words are wise words - Jegs - I entirely agree with you - for me Yeol Eum Son is one of the best pianists of the so called new generation

  • @jegspillerpiano well, check out pollini, i like him the best and has the perfect balance for me
