  • This is awful , I don't think i have heard anything as bowdlerized as this for years. Poor girl was not very creative was she! How could she claim this to be hers? it's rubbish, fiull of echo and so darned tootin'...rubbish

  • We should not expect EC to sing any song the way it was originally .

Arrangement is part of what makes her so unique.

There are some exceptions like Danny boy which she had the foresight to leave the same.

  • She is the best!!!!!

  • the original was better. and because it's an OLD ENGLISH FOLK SONG, not a MODERN COUNTRY SONG, it doesn't work and doubt it ever will. sorry.

  • That voice! That voice... It stabs me right in the heart...

  • If anything the song is too short! she excudes the sounds of the smokies with eateral beauty.

  • I don't care who's song it is, if it's better or worse. I just LOVE hearing Eva sing....!

  • Not my favourite version, and not my favourite Eva song either...the arrangement is kind of irritating...

  • to hear eva sing is a pleasure, and comparisons are not necessary, just enjoy, rip eva

  • Good Version, But I Prefer The Pernell Roberts's Version

  • WAY too much reverb.

  • it's an interesting version. I don't think people should fuss about it being so different, that's what folk music is all about - everyone having their own interpritation of different songs and tunes/

  • A powerful interpretation - it's not the original song, it's an original piece inspired by it, and as such it works on its own terms. I'm surprised prochainarret can't hear the subtle distinction between the depiction of the girl's and the boy's voices echoing each other - the girl in the valley, the boy on the mountain who 'saw her walking' and then comments, 'sitting on yonder hill' . She then goes into a personal voice in the last voice ... makes me wonder why - any answers?

  • If it is an original piece, I have no problem with that. But she needed to rename it to reflect it's originality.

  • You know, some things are called traditional because they are so good in their original form that they become.....traditions. This song is such. It should not have been tampered with. This can hardly even be called a "version" of the original. Though I like much of what Eva did, this was a bad call on her part. RIP, Eva.

  • RIGHT!

  • I admit I was expecting a more traditional rendering of the well-known english song, but I love this variation

the effortless and gorgeous power in Eva's voice as she sings "don't deceive me, don't you leave me" - ah it's so brilliant!!

but I don't understand the narrative voice - the 1st and 3rd times she sings "...poor girl" but in the second verse she sings "...poor boy..."

anybody know the background/context to Eva's treatment here?

  • Written by herself ?

This a interesting version but she didn't write it i do prefer the original version :) i'd like to have heard her sing it in the original way .

  • "Written by Eva herself"

Changing a few words and writing half a verse hardly counts as writing a song by yourself.

  • don't think i like her version on this(:

  • Agreed. I really like Ms Cassidy, but I just feel this song should be sung with acoustic backing.

  • Why cry so loud in the morning?

  • I'm singing the original version of this song for my unaccompanied song in my grade 2 music exam. Although I prefer the original version of this song, Eva Cassidy makes it unique and her own. She has a beautiful voice.

  • omb, same, lol.

  • Aces.

i'm singing a song she sung, one of my faves, time after time, for my grade 4. I did my grade 2 december last year.

  • wow...you were alive in the 19th century?

Its a folk song! The beauty of it is that Eva's version is as original as the one you have heard :-P

    Peace

  • im not sure who you think you are but your foul mouthing is only humiliating yourself, being 15 doesnt mean i am unaware of the talentless cassidy ! and my opinion is my opinion, so just give it a rest, your not clever and [thatwizard1] thankyou

  • I agree with you. I'm not too keen on this version, and you're right; this is clearly based on the folk song 'Early One Morning', which is a very famous song, and I cannot believe that these people do not know this to begin with. I certainly don't think that Cassidy should claim to have written this all herself. The fact that you knew this says to me that you are completely the opposite of uneducated.

  • @campvamp eva never claimed to have writen this song or any all the lady did was take songs she loved and rearranged them in her own uniqe way and god bless her for that talent she made alot os songs so much better x i ll always be listeing to her versions more than the orginals my self, but thats just me x

  • @willmymon Oh no, I didn't mean to say that she had claimed the song for her own, I meant that I didn't think that she would have ever claimed to do that. I should have said it clearer. I was mostly just replying to people who felt like insulting one of the commenters on this video because they stated (correctly) that the song was not Eva's.

  • @campvamp seems like we all make them same mistakes then at this point i would love to type what i mean and wish u well but sadly i cant spel for shyt so ill just say have a good 1 x

  • @campvamp

I learned to sing "Early one morning" as a child - a bit more than 45 years ago.

It was a British ballad of unknown origin, as far as I knew.

After listening to this version, I can't imagine Cassidy ever claimed this to be her own; goodness rest her soul.

  • thank you, and i agree, just because a person is young doesn't mean that their opinions don't matter.

  • They just matter less, unless they know what they're talking about which for most of us "young" folk ain't exactly pulling off all the time. Sad but true.

  • ya she did ruin this song

  • No, she didn't. She is an amazing talent that turns everything she touches to gold. I have yet to hear ONE song that she has ruined. Even the greats call her "The Voice." So, on that note, I'll say the same thing to you, thatwizard1, that I told faithofangel. Learn some humility, child!

  • maybe i was a little harsh in my review, but i still don't like what she did to this song. that's my opinion, I'm just saying it, nothing against her but i just didn't like it.

  • @thatwizard1

You shared your opinion just as the youngen shared hers/his...she spats off that hers counts even though she's young, but negates the fact that yours ALSO counts. lol...and btw I agree with your review...this version is not the best one i've heard.

  • YES!

Her new album is just as beyond great as all her others.

    I live for this song!
