His individual works may not stand up so well buy the Stone Roses will. They had an impact similar to the Byrds or Bob Dylan; thats how big an impact The Stone Roses had on British Rock. He heavily contributed to the Stone Roses, not to mention all the bands that came after them that wouldn't have had the impact they had if it weren't for the Stone Roses.
John squire wrote most of the lyrics and wrote all of the riffs and mani was a great bass player...Ian was just the singer and he dont write most of the lyrics on his solo albums either. I love Ian, hes cool, but Genius or Godlike...Nah, No way..
@easyman182 bollocks..ian solely wrote i wanna be adored and i am the resurrection..and co wrote the album..squire did write most of the second album..but its the first all that gets all the credit..the second album is underated and is great..but give ian some credit if it wasnt for some of those songs at the time 1989 guitar music was dissapearing..so ian is up there with the best in my eyes...
@hoppybhoy71 I do give ian credit man, hes a great frontman, singer and hes cool as fuck. But no way would I call him a genius or godlike. I wanna be adored is a great song but the lyrics are not great, there is two lines the whole song! Id call john squire a genius before I call ian one...
@easyman182 cool..but if squire was that much a genius..why was the seahorses and his solo stuff very poor and normal at best....i guess ian was missing..i do get what you are saying..but they are a partnership that should never be forgot...
Quit talkin about fuckin artic monkeys russel Bland ye prick how can you call urself a comedian your the least funny thing on tv! Can't you see your in the presence of greatness! United till i die they still play 'This is the One' at Old Trafford when the reds are runnin out! legend
ha ha ha the twat from NME the so called great music paper says the roses debut was 1998 what a trolly dolly.NME was made cool by bands like the smiths the roses and the mondays and as soon as the NME got what they could out them they turned on them.NME is just a student newspaper with non productive bands and columns BUY THE BIG ISSUE ITS BETTER.
Stone Roses were cool ...huge influence on Oasis, BRMC, etc. but the music itself isn't as amazing as people say. As for Ian Brown, love his solo stuff but F.E.A.R is the most pretentious song've ever heard.
Wow, @'but the music itself isn't as amazing as people say' - You must be stupid if you NEED people to tell you that Stone Roses music is amazing- and then disclaim it! Maybe you should listen to their first album like 48 times and then you'll be able to tell yourself it's amazing. Jesus Christ, lol. Heheheh, and F.E.A.R - 'pretentious'? Seriously? Probably one of the best song's Browns made in his hugely, under-rated solo career. Lol, 'isn't as amazing as people say'. You've made my day.
I'm not sure what you're talking about. I don't "NEED" people to tell me anything about music. I'm saying that I don't see what the fuss is about. They were innovative and influential but as far as making music that makes an emotional impact, they never did it for me. Odds are you've been unable to appreciate the hype about something as well so I'm not sure what's so "lol" funny about what I said. But I'm glad to have made your day. Oh and yes, I "seriously" meant that F.E.A.R is pretentious.
I disagree. I think musically the Roses were streets ahead of the rest. With the exception of brown, the other three were all fantasitcally talented musicians. Reni was the best drummer of his generation (according to Pete Townsend he was as good as moon), Squire and Mani - awesome. The rhythym and fluidity of their songs is streets ahead of say Oasis and a lot of other groups. That's why they're known as the george best of music. Could have made it big with the talent they had but blew it.
omg i cant believe some of the fucking useless cunts on here dissin ian brown, he is a legend he is a genius and he will be remembered in 40 years time u fucking daft cunt
WOW this NME is so fucking radical like because right... they let fucking people curse and fucking shit like that ... WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THE MUSIC !!!!!!!
also just because a band has massive success doesn't mean they good come to think of it i don't even like the fucking beatles STONE ROSES RULE KISS ME WHERE THE SUN DON'T SHINE
of course ian brown will be remembered in 40 years time you unwise twat. Personally i much prefer the stone roses to the beatles the beatles wrote loads of good songs but theyre irrelevent songs when your feeling hateful and revengful unlike the roses.
beatles are overrated. stone roses are about as important as primal scream and happy mondays but made a more complete and perfect album. their originality is their weakness as far as fame goes, they had no audience yet. they will get there respect worldwide eventually. currently their greatness is recognized by other artists and is copied. ian brown is great for sure man.
Give me a break!!! Where are his great songs ? He hasnt got any, maybe one or two at best... If his songs were great standards up there with the like of The Beatles. Everyone would know them like they know "Hey Jude" or "Yesterday"... He's just not in that class, and he knows it! Hence I don't see him as anything great let alone a "legend"... In 47 years time to u guys honestly think Ian Brown will be remebered ? I think not. I'd put my money on it!
what the fuck do you know mate? you cant be so ignorant about music, plus you named the most commercial songs by the beatles, which shows you dont even have an idea about them as well.
Never thought I would get involved in these comments but monkey magic, congratulations you have forced me to break my cherry with this shit, man, why not just not listen to ian brown, why have a discussion? just to instigate?
I think Kylie Minogue will be known long after Ian Brown! In fact Ian Brown is a has been, lets face facts... Not many people in the world know who he is outside the UK and even then people would have trouble nameing one of his songs, if they were not around when the Roses were. They flopped big time at Reading Festival in 1996, I remeber that! He did not last lonng did he :-)
also, i am from the united states and i know about ian brown, matter of fact lost of people do, turns out he has a following here that is big with skaters, hip hop fans, reggae fans, electronic fans, etc, and we listen to him in the same day as bob dylan, james brown, bob marley
If he's a legend then I'm King Kong! Lets see if people know any of his songs in 47 years time, like they know The Beatles - I think not. That said its just a stupid magazine award, which is about all he will get. It means nothing! People only latched onto The Roses because there was not much else around in regard to guitar bands in the late 80's! 80's = Prince, Jackson, Madonna, George Micheal, hence people went for The Roses, but they were not and never will be up there with The Beatles!
Nas, Ol Dirty bastard, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Sizzla, but guess what? no Kylie Minogue plays. Its not about who gets remembered anymore since record companies control that shit, its about who is a real legend by being original and moving artists with good beats or good tunes.
No way is he up there with Dylan, Hendrix, Lennon etc etc etc! AND HE KNOWS IT!!! This is rubbish. Theres no one these days who fits the bill these days of "legend" hence they look around scrap the barrel and think he'l do!!!! Fact.
No way. No one here in France has any idea who he is, and that is called a legend ? He's a fake. In-fact I doubt anyone all over europe knows who this guy is. Most people would find it hard to even name one of his songs!!!!!
Well he knows full well he's not up there with The Beatles! Wheres his great songs like Yesterday, Hey Jude, Something, Eloanor Rigby,A Day In The Life, Let It Be, Here Comes The Sun etc etc etc! ian brown IS a legend of that there is no doubt
apparently though, he DOESN'T play stone roses tunes anymore live because his solo stuff is better and he doesn't believe in nostalgia :-(
i was banned from the ian brown forum for suggesting he should
if you want to see roses tunes live, you now need to see a tribute band - howw gutting is that?!?!?!

he does play stone roses songs,
he plays waterfall and fools gold at every festival he's played at this year.
