It always amazes me that we can apparently see quasars and galaxies billions of light years away, but we DON'T know everything that happens in our own backyard... How is this possible?

6:54 ICBMs get highest, and they still can't get high enough; afaik, they barely get at LEO. For a strike on an asteroid to be even slightly effective, it would have to be at least a few dozen Earth diameters away from Earth, to allow either for trajectory change or rubble dispersion.
