The Walker Brothers were one of the first live performances on this show. They are singing live and this is a lower key than the original recording. They would have had to. Scott's voice wasn't high enough to do the lead in the song's chorus. So in the studio version....John sang the melody from the hook...and Scott sang harmony during the chorus. Since this was live...they laid down the track in a lower key so Scott would be able to stay with the melody all the way thru.
There aren't nearly enough live videos of Scott Walker. This one would probably be the best if not for the awesome Mathilde performance from Dusty Springfield's show.
why did the music of this era fall from such greatness class and elagance to the gutter trash it is now. Also the 70,s and 80,s what hhappened to it such a pity and shame from what it once was/ To the filthy rapping noise now and whimming country music.
@boytomljusdal Can you tell me John's full name and how he passed away. John is the lead singer in this video right ? He's from my era, I am deeply sadened.
HOLY SHIT! I can't believe the Walker Bros. pull this song off live! For you none-musicians who may not have an appreciation, this is an amazing feet and takes an incredible amount of talent to achieve.
I don't think they are singing it live. but syncing it. At least there cannot possibly be a full orchestra in the RSG studio.I may be wrong though, in which case I agree with what you say. Just wonderful. he was the epitome of cool.
I admit that I'm not sure about the orchestra, although they stop abruptly at the end of the song which is not how it was originally recorded. However, both Scott & John are definitely singing LIVE! My comment was praising their ABILITY to remain incredibly true to the phenomenal studio version.
I was in the US Army in Germany when this made the charts. Naturally, it was and emotion-grabber - with me having a "Dear John" event and all. This, along with "Make It Easy On Yourself", and a bunch of beer, was good for the "blues". BTW, I had a GF in Amsterdam, so don't feel to sad for me. Almost forgot. The singing? Strong, moving, great harmony. and good accompaniment
Quand j'écoutais ce titre pour la première fois, j'avais 12 ans et j'avais des frissons. Ce titre promettait un avenir plein d'amour et de bonheur. I need you... Aujourd'hui, quand j'écoute ce titre, j'ai l' impression d'être toujours la même avec un coeur plein d'espoir, malgré mes expériences et mes déceptions.
John W's death jogged my memory about the Walker Bros, whom I first heard when I was about 8 yrs old. Was captivated by Scott's voice then, but now I'm listening to this repeatedly and it's there in my head when i wake up in the morning! I don't think Scott Walker knew/knows what a heady combination he (i.e his superb voice and lovely innocent looks) makes when joined with such fantastic orchestration, melody and lyrics. Haunting & heavenly. Thanks to all of them...and to God for Scott's voice.
Can't believe John has died. @rameller1 I Too Am Wondering If Spector Had Anything To Do With The Walkers Music. I Rather Doubt it Though Because The Walker Bros. Didn't Record in The States*****
There's so much great stuff going on musically (like the really cool Spectorish bass line, echoed on piano) that it's easy to miss what a really excellent lyric this song has. "Emptiness...It's a place you're in...nothing to lose...but no more to win..." Great song. Did this one start out with the Four Seasons?

This masterpiece from 44 years ago is even bettered by this superb live rendition, I cannot get enough of watching it over and over again, the song, in my all time personal top three, is timeless sung to perfection,I loved it as a boy back in ' 66, and still do !.

This masterpiece from 44 years ago is even bettered by this superb live rendition, I cannot get enough of watching it over and over again, the song, in my all time personal top three, is timeless sung to perfection,I loved it as a boy back in ' 66, and still do !.
