  • the mach1 has a completly diffrent engine than the gt

    The mustang gt has a 16 valve single over head cam cast iron motor

    The mach1 has a 32 valve dual overhead cam aluminum block and heads motor

    The only thing the gt motor has in common with the mach1 motor is they both displace 281 cubic inches other than that they are completely different motors

    I also thought I would throw in the mach 1's body is mostly fiberglass it weighs 434 lbs less than a mustang 99-04 mustang gt

  • They both share the same 4.6 liter V8 engine. The main difference is that the 03/04 cobra comes from the factory with a supercharger (390 hp at the crank) and the Mach is NA (305 hp at the crank)

  • I would prefer a Cobra. They both have a lot of potential though. The Cobra is the more rare of the 2 unless you want a convertible. It is also more expensive by an average of at least $5,000 from what I have seen. I prefer the look of the Cobra and the engine is already built to take forced induction. You can get 600 horsepower to the wheels and still daily drive the car. If you want a less expensive platform, go with the Mach 1 but I agree that the Cobra is better :)

  • So Jdp whats the difference between a Mach 1 Mustang and a GT Mustang?

  • The GT also uses the 4.6 liter V8 platform like the Mach and the Cobra. They made some changes to basically make the Mach breath better to get more horsepower (functional hood scoop, different cams, upgraded exhaust manifolds, etc.) The Mach has 305 break hp from the factory vs. the 260 break hp in the GT. They also made some changes to the suspension and gearing in the Mach. These are the performance differences with of course some differences in appearance.

  • he honestly isnt a mustang finatic.. the difference between a mach 1 and GT is FAR more than just engine. They have a better transmission, which became standard in GT's in 04, the suspension was different, it was the same suspension found on a 2001 bullit, 4 piston brakes, shaker hood, rounded body pannels, mach 1 c pillars, chin spoiler, the 4.6 is a cobra engine, just no M112 eaton s/c, the reason it makes more power than a GT is due to the quad cams and 4v heads. there was interior things too

  • @krenogin better transmission? the tr3650? I have a 97 Cobra with the same t45 that's found in 01 and before GTs and I've had no problems out of it. And my car is a nitrous car too. My buddy had an 03 gt with the same tranny you're referring to and it broke twice in 2 months. They're supposed to be better, but I dont think so..

  • @krenogin Yeah. Idk I haven't heard many good things about the ones in the 01-04 GTs. I've heard good things about the ones found in the 05+'s. A lot of people talk bad about the t-45, but I've beaten the hell out of mine.. still runs strong.

  • The way the IRS is setup on a Corvette makes it perfect for the track and drag racing. I think the Vette has a leaf spring turned upside down to make the IRS system on the vette so versatile.

  • #4 The cobra has a completely built motor that can hold some ASININE numbers. I think its like 900+ before the manley rods start to wear out. The crank is rated at like 1300 (which is what the block can hold) The pistons are good for the same im pretty sure. What i was sayin was that if you were gonna mad the mach 1 anyway, way not get a cobra? The mach 1 has a heavy rear end, the crank is the only forged piece and only in a manual. It just doesnt click with me. By no means was i raggin it

  • i understand you weren't raggin the mach, i do agree that the cobra can produce some serious numbers from the factor, both are great cars and like i've said before i respect the cobra and love seeing one crusie down the highway.

  • Actually the IRS is heavier on the cobra, plus Solid axle is way better for drag racing, too much wheel hop with the irs.

  • yea the new shelbys are heavy as fuck. but then 200lbs= 2 tenths of a second off your stock ET. and the 120hp the shelby has over the SVT should make up the diff. really it should be close to a full second faster than the 03-04's.

  • Not really. Most stock 03-04 cobra were underrated making 425 and up at the crank not 390.

  • yea i know. 03-04 made 420hp. the gt500Kr has 540hp. so there is a 120hp diff.

  • Yes. And they have run high tens in Muscle Mustangs and Fast fords. Im talking about the 07-09's. The 2010 is a different car all around. Speed, handling, etc.

  • true a 03-04 cobra can hold 1000 hp on stock bottom end. but they already had a bottom end upgrade from the factory. i think the cobra was rated to hold at most 800hp safely. you could push it to 1000, but your taking a big risk of your engine blowing quick.

  • I wasnt raggin on the car or nothin. I like them too. Its just if i was gonna by one or the other, i would go ahead and get the cobra for the extra money cause #1 You already spent the money to get the cobra on mods for the mach 1 and can still only keep up with the cobra. #2 With only one mod, a cobra hits 700hp all day long. That is just absolutely ridiculous. #3 The cobra has IRS and is light and can keep up with rally cars around a track. Thats saying somthing for a muscle car.

  • ok..... that only proves the cobra is a better car though..... At the end of the day all a cobra owner has to do is get a kenne bell s/c and thats the end for basically anything the working class person can afford and for only around 30,000 for the car and s/c. Now that is the best "bang for the buck"

  • i understand what your sayin i do. but when you take both cars from stock and the price the mach is the better bang for the buck the 1 thing the 03-04 cobra has on a mach is the engine block that would cost me another 4200 to get one so i could push the 700hp

  • a mach is basical like a 01 cobra same motor same tranny the mach doesn't have the irs "which is better and leighter that the solid rear end." the plus side to the mach is that it has 3.55 gears. if you look at a mach 1 times mmff they got one running stock mach 1 running 13.1 mulp times, a stock 03cobra around 12.8 so for a few thousand of dollards cheaper you are almost keepin up with a s/c car

  • i understand its not in the 12's with the cobra but pretty damn close though, also the mach are 300+ less than a cobra cuz of the irs. to get down to the point i'm tryin to make, which ever car you get they are both great, i love the 03-04 cobra's and respect them for what they are.
